Re the AF of the i35, how shaky are we talking? How would it hold up for family photos - toddler on his travels etc?
How do you find the images between the GM and i35?
I took about 350 images last year with the i35 and about 1400 with the 35GM.
I just took a quick scan through these photos, and the rendering between the two lenses is quite different. The Sigma is somehow more "analog" in appearance. There is better contrast in the 35GM images from what I can tell, particularly in backlit situations. And of course, there is a noticeable difference between wide open at f/2 and f/1.4.
I think that with the OG A9 the 35i AF struggled a bit with animal eye AF. For people, even in low light, it is pretty good. I don't recall tossing a lot of shots for people AF with the 35i. But in really low light, where I didn't even think I could acquire AF, the 35GM works amazingly well. I never put the 35i in such situations.
As of the end of last year, I acquired an A7RV. I have shot the 35GM with it on one trip to Japan and about 180 photos, and the eye AF of course is even better with the new AiAF capability. I haven't mounted up the 35i to the A7RV, yet.
As for the question about "how shaky", I would say that initial eye AF focus acquisition is noticeably better on the 35GM than the 35i. I shot some toddler + young adult (my daughter) shots in Japan with the 35GM and A7RV at the highest burst rate and not a single shot was out of focus. I forgot how quickly toddlers move! How the 35i would do is just speculation on my part, since I haven't shot it with the A7RV, and I haven't shot toddlers with the 35i on either body. Sorry to be so inconclusive - I just don't have the experience.
