I want a 35mm lens for the A7CR. Would love to just get a GM, but the price is juicy. An alternate would be either the Sigma ART or the Zeiss. Both of those are about the same size. I have a 55/1.8 I am happy with so I am leaning towards getting the Zeiss. thoughts? do I bite the bullet and just go for the GM?

The Sigma 35i is my favorite 35mm in e-mount.

The Zony is actually quite a bit smaller. I have the Sigma, which is great, and had the Sony in the past. Either one is a good choice.

I'm using the Sony 35mm f1.8 and it's the perfect size and weight for the a7c cameras.

I'd go Sony 35/1.8 minty used if you are on a budget. It is surely not perfect, but it is still great.

I had the Sony 35/2.8 way back when but I found the results uninspiring.

If the focal length is still ok, I can recommend the Sony 2,5/40mm.
Not on the same level as the GM 1,4/35mm, but a very good lens in its own right, compact and very lightweight.

There are two Sony Zeiss branded 35mm lenses. I assume the OP meant the F1.4 Distagon since they say it is similar in size to the Sigma Art (DN or the older one?) I've only tried that one once, and it was certainly not well-aligned, so I have to reserve some judgement about it.

If the OP doesn't care about size the Samyang AF F1.4 is actually lovely and very affordable and may have less alignment issues than the Sony/Zeiss ZAs. It is faster and sharper than their F1.8, which is a nice lens too.

I would like to try another copy of the Sonnar, because the one I tried was also not well-aligned--much less sharp than the two newer third-party AF 35mm F2.8 primes, but it definitely has some advantages to them--such as AF performance.

Would you be ok with the 35mm GM size on the A7C? I read a lot of people wouldn’t be ok with it.

I own the GM and also the 40mm lens when I was something really compact. The 35mm GM really does produce lovely photos but it’s not small.

Image wise, it’s probably one of my favourite lenses though.

I completely agree. I had the 35/2.8 back in the A7R days and was never very impressed with the lens (other than its small size).

If you are really budget limited, the suggested, used, 35mm f1.8 from FM B&S might be a good choice.

If you do "bite the bullet" and spring for the GM 35mm f1.4, with its stellar optical performance, you can really take advantage of the 61mp of your A7CR; plus, the lens will really hold-up to cropping for an effective 50mm, or so. Also, it is a lens that you would likely keep for a long time.

One of my favorite lenses for my A7CR is the GM 24mm f1.4. It is fairly compact, I get the lens speed (good for indoors and night shooting) and it is sharp enough to where I can crop to 28mm - 35mm with good IQ.

I wonder if there is a lot of sample variation with the Sony 35. 2.8. It’s an older lens maybe before Sony had their act together with lens QC. I love everything about my 35 2.8…except it’s a 2.8. As far as quality images, it definitely delivers.

Yeah, I think there is. I am always a bit surprised when someone, such as yourself, gives it accolades. Back when it was released, copy variation, in general, was not ideal (same for Nikon and Canon).

My copy wasn't too bad in the center at f2.8, but the outer frame was pretty soft wide-open (not field curvature related as I am also talking about focusing away from center).

I already have the 24-70 so the size would not bother me. I would get the GM but it's a bit more than I like, but not necessarily completely out. A used Zony is less than half

Good point about getting the better optics for the 61 mp

If size isn’t important, bite the bullet, get the 35mm GM. Its image quality is lovely.

I have a similar question, so I hope I'm not hijacking this topic. I'm also on the market for a compact 35mm lens.

How is the character and rendering of the Zony 35mm f/2.8? I understand that outer-frame sharpness is a mixed bag due to QC issues (although, on a good copy, it seems to do reasonably well).

I already own the 35mm f/1.8, but find its size just a little bigger when I want to turn my A7CR into a "point and shoot" for everyday snapshots.

If you can stretch to it, could you consider the Sony 40mm 2.5 G?

It's in consideration. The only issue is:

1. I'm not a huge fan of the 40mm focal length (having owned a GR IIIx and sold) -- there's far more shots/composition I couldn't get because I physically couldn't walk further away; but I can always take a step and come closer.

2. I already own the Sony 50mm 2.5 G; and enjoy the 50mm focal length a lot more -- but want something a bit wider.

Sounds like you’ve got trapped, much like me, on finding small lenses but then overlapping my focal lengths. It’s tough!
