Somebody needs a manicure!

A very healthy looking bear - and it's nice to be able to see one without an ear tag or collar.

Thanks Molson - he is a great bear. I put more pictures on Nature - if anyone is interested. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1860488/

The higher fstop vs my 200-400 was significant in processing but increased safety of not lugging a big huge lens was great. It enabled me to get out and back in when needed without juggling a behemoth.

Video of the Peregrine Falcon family of Hannibal, Mo. This was videoed from about 1/4 mile away, and the nesting area is 1/3 of the way out into the river, affecting image quality with heat waves among other issues. Since the fall of 2018, I have photographed adult Peregrine Falcons near the Mark Twain Bridge over the Mississippi River . A local Peregrine Falcon lover alerted me that there were 3 young Falcons eyases (chicks) hatched this year under the bridge, on the top of a pier out in the Mississippi River. The Falcons have nested under the bridge and have attempted to raise young the last few years. This video and stills is my first ever of the young Peregrine Falcons. Also in the video is Mom and Dad at times bringing food, feeding and watching after the family. At the end is a good wing stretch view of one of the chicks!

Finally got my hands on the 200-800 late last week. I lucked out and got a pretty sharp copy. Where I've been struggling is with highlights. I've seen a few reviews mentioning it being easy to blow the highlights with this lens and so far I agree. I've somewhat struggled with metering on Canon as it is. Maybe I just haven't figured out the way Canon does it just yet.

^ Perhaps a factor contributing to highlight clipping is that with the speed of the lens, one will be working at higher ISOs where dynamic range will be lower than at base ISO. The above example was at ISO 4000. According to Photos to Photos, the R5 at that ISO has a PDR of about 7 compared to 11.8 at base ISO. IMO that's a pretty significant DR reduction and has greater consequences when deciding how to meter a given scene - i.e. whether to protect highlights or shadows. In the above photo it looks like both are clipped.

I don't find the highlights any worse than with other lenses.

Peregrine Falcon family of Hannibal, Mo. June 9, 2024. The three young Falcons are losing their fluff, and video starts with two interacting on top of the Mississippi River bridge pier out in the river at Hannibal, MO where they were hatched, soon joined by the third one. Continues and dad stops to check on them for a few seconds without food. Then they hang out and soon mom is there with food and one gets it and scurries between the bridge beams in a hurry and mom leaves the pier. Videoed from 1/4 mile away. Very high magnification due to distance, Canon R5 RF200-800 2X extender 4k crop mode (2560mm field of view). I also picked up a bit of sound of the eyas hollering for mom or dad to bring food.

Interesting. Unfortunately, since I don't even have time to view all the still images posted, I don't even bother to view videos posted that take much longer to view. JMO

Thanks for your honesty.
You were my inspiration to buy the RF2X.
Seeing your results with it the last few months made me decide to get it.
I've been hoping to see you use it with your new 200-800.

Thanks. The problem with shooting in the 500 to 800mm range is heat shimmer. You can get it even with focal lengths of 400mm and lower. I find many images are unusable due to heat shimmer that can happen any time of year at any temperature.
Putting a TC on the 200-800 would only make those results even worse.

Tony

Well it's been 3 weeks with the new 200-800. I have 200-400 f4 (560 f5.6), RF 100-400, EF100-400 v1 and ef 600f4/1.4x v2

Bears move in and out, its dangerous to be too close, when you come across them in your car you have to take pictures from your car or they run, often there are several of them so you have to keep your wits. And here in Alberta you have trees everywhere so need 200-800. On this shoot the photo target was very nervous because there was another collared bear outside of sight that he was watching, so I was quite cautious as well.

I love the range - 200-800 means no changing of lens all the time.

The IQ is great - good enough for bears always.

I love the size and weight reduction in my car but it's still a bit on the long side. In the car for on my lap.

The separation (from dof, bokeh) is not as great but it helps to ensure focus.

But the reason it works is that iso 12k works well on r5/r8. My old 5dsr would be challenged at f9.

It is a fantastic bear lens. It would be nicer if f5.6 but then it would be too heavy and large.

Now it's hard to choose - which lens to have on my r8 or r5. R5/200-800 and R8 200-400 is current, with 600 for long (this would switch to R5/600 R8/200-800 if I was in Yellowstone with big wide open spaces.)

Great job - Canon. Without I would have missed bear stand while I switched to 600/f4 or I would have had to crop lots on 200-400. But now I think I need a 3rd camera (r7/200-400) to avoid juggling. Too much choosing.

For some reason Exif dropped - its in nature if you want to see 10,000 iSO f9 800mm
