Clearly, you can't achieve soft backgrounds at f/9.0.

I would not take this lens over my 100-500. I would expect images taken by the same photographer using the R5, using the same PP, and shooting with the 100-500 with either TC attached would give as good or better results.

Imagemaster, appreciate your thoughts - I have been very impressed with many of your photos with the 100-500. Coincidentally, the 200-800 has gone on sale at some stores in Australia today (around $500 off) which seems odd for such a new release.

I have to say, I'm impressed with most of the images that are being posted by people on this thread. I had one on order early on, then backed off to wait and see what people were getting. Obviously, I'd prefer f/4 or f/5.6 at the long end, but that necessitates much more size and weight (and price) which are big negatives.

The results I'm seeing are great. I will reconsider this lens in the near future. If I didn't already have the 100-500, I'd probably have made the jump sooner, but it's hard to beat that lens as a long tele zoom. Still, 800 is very useful for birding so there's that.

I just received mine yesterday, so this morning I took it out for a test. It's balanced fine with my R5, heavier than the RF 100-500 but very manageable. The extra reach without using a TC nice, as it works the complete 200-800 which is nice. The zone mechanism was smooth.

There are some fantastic images in this thread. Can any of the owners here share a link to some raw or unprocessed full res jpegs wide open fully zoomed with and without the 1.4x? I'm on the fence about it as I already own the 100-500mm and I've seen everything from fairly poor sharpness to images that rival the 100-500mm. The digital picture's lens comparison tool shows it being softer than the 100-500mm by a fair bit but some youtubers say it is on par. I'm wondering how much copy variation there is.

Have pre-orders for this lens been fulfilled anytime recently? I received mine about a month ago, and seems like very few if any are finding their way into the hands of people. A couple from this lens...

No sir! My Nov 5 pre-order from B&H is still MIA, but they do kindly send me a periodic email reminding me I still don't have it 😂

Canon really missed the boat on this release, and were wholly unprepared for the market demand.

I'd actually forgotten about this lens as there is so little talk about it. Canon did/has left a lot of money on the table with such poor advance planning and availability. I hope we don't see a repeat of this with the forthcoming R5 II.
