Hi folks,

My apologies... yesterday I accidently posted a new thread entitled, "Jan and Duade: more great field results: R5 + RF 200-800 + 1.4x TC" into the whole Canon forum (first level) rather than posting it in this thread here. Unfotunately, I don't know how to get that fixed.

Can someone please advise me on that?

Once again my apologies, I wasn't intending on starting yet another thread on this topic.

Thanks,
Rudy

Hi Rudy, just post your content here as well, and the other thread will probably just be left behind.

Great results in good light, handholding from theses two shooters
Jan complained about his wrist hurting with all the zooming and the weight, but this was after shooting for a couple hours. If that's not your scenario, you should be golden, if it is, be aware what your in for.

I like this guy. Sums up what I thought the 200-800 was good for.

Agreed. Now if we could just start getting images posted in this image thread rather then video links and chatter we'd be golden.

A few images from the last few weeks with the lens. Have had the opportunity to use it in a myriad of conditions. Happy with the AF and overall results. 100-500 was noticeably faster/sharper but the reach trumps it for my applications.

I received this lens this week and was able to use it a bit in rather low light levels yesterday. I was shooting it side-by-side with the RF600 f/4 at a feeder setup. Obviously the IQ is not the same as the RF600, but it was quite good, especially for shooting at ISO6400 on the R5. I did process in DXO Pure Raw, cleared up a few harsher areas of bokeh in the background, and did a quick sharpening in Topaz Sharpen. I would do the same process with the RF600.

This friend stopped by this morning, in heavily overcast weather, so I tried to drag the shutter a bit. Still not a 100-500, but ok.

For comparison, adding two photos of his cousins taken at the same spot same distance but with the 400/2.8, different time obviously, and cropped.

Thank you for the posting, and your initial shots on sharpness. You live in a great spot where birds and bobcats drop by.

Different lighting, different distance, apsc cropped, and even more importantly, if you were handholding, 1/500 and 1/250 vs 1/160 - almost 3x the shutter speed. Its not clear but it could be that the IS is not as good as the rf 400. The rf 400's look great. Maybe I will have to buy a r7.

Nice shots at close to 1/1000 shutter. The lens does well. When I compare to Stanj's, I wonder if the IS is weak on the lens.

IS did seem notably less effective on this lens than the RF600 or the 100-500. It seemed to take a bit longer to fully stabilize, and when it did, it wasn’t as effective as either of the other lenses I mentioned.

I'm not sure if the IS is "weak". 800mm is harder to stabilize. I would say it isn't quite at the RF 100-500mm level, but it did the job.

Thanks!

I think the 100-500mm is a better lens. I made a comparison between the R7 + 100-500mm and R6 II + 200-800mm. I think the R6 II + 200-800mm edges out on IQ, especially the bokeh, but the R7 + 100-500mm is close, and an R7 is cheaper than the 200-800mm. For these shots, I think that if I had the R7 + 100-500mm on me I'd get similar results.

I got lucky in that it stayed still for me to get close, around 6 meters or so, I think. That is where the 800mm will shine, i.e., being able to fill the frame. The last image is a "1-1" crop.

I processed the raw files with DXO PhotoLab 7 PureRaw and then adjusted exposure in LrC. The sun was coming from the other side of the fence, so the bird was "backlit". I started out in front of it and the sun was more in the clouds, but coming out a bit. I tried to angle myself along the fence to get the best angle for the sun. Still, it was more backlit than I wanted. So, I made some adjustments in LrC bringing up the shadows and reducing the highlights on the bird.

I'm not at my photo processing computer, but I can post a link to the CRAW files later.

well, it sucks having to post after "PinholeR5" (awsome shots), but just blaming the 430pm light that was fading under the clouds....lol However it's very promissing, and surely heavier and longer thatn the ef100-400, wich ofcourse does nor reach 800mm - unless you add-up a 2X, and then I think that indeed the rf200-800 is better.
These are indeed the very first shoot as I received it earlier today. Have to tweak the R3 settings a litle bit, as it was a bit hesitant to focus ina few instances, but the light was getting very dim. Likely will perform way better in full sunlight

Amazing colors came out of those hawk shots PinholeR5 with that soft lighting.
The weather has been dark and cloudy here I just need to wait for some sunny day to try out this lens.

Thanks. Yes, the light was good!

I've been able to get some good shots with dark and cloudy conditions, but it is a bit more frustrating as you get high ISOs and noise. If you can get close enough to your subjects, though, it can deliver good results even in dark environments.
