Experience selling to KEH?

I've sold to them both at local buying events and directly to the store. In both instances, I got pretty much what I expected. I had a lot of large format items, and I got very good deals on them. I needed to sell a Nikkor 400mm f/5.6 AiS, shipped the lens to their store, and got a better price from them than from local dealers.

I like selling in person to KEH, because you can interest them in the smaller junk you collect: filters, adapters, lenshoods, bags, batteries etc, which is hard to do by mail.

In the states, amongst these two used vendors, and the camera stores with used departments, it does really depend on how much of any one inventory item on hand, demand/scarcity, and how it effects price.

And funny how KEH will take that smaller "junk", while UsedPhoto Pro usually won't.

I graded a Zeiss Milvus 135mm at Excellent and KEH rated it at as ‘Bargain.’ I sent it to MPB who accepted it as it at my rating so I’ve gone to them since. The difference in $$ was quite a bit.

Even when MPB gave me a new rating that was different then mine the difference was about $20.

Didn't realize KEH did in-person buying events. May have to take advantage of that.

I highly recommend MPB. I recently got a quote for a body and some lenses. I chose to sell the body on FM. By the time I sold it for the reduced price and paid fees and shipping I netted very near to their quote. By very near, I mean not enough difference for the hassle of taking photos, bumping the post over several days or weeks, packaging and shipping. I got a fresh quote and sent the 10 lenses to MPB - one package. A few days later they informed that for five of the lenses they would pay me more than the quote, one slightly less, and they found a cracked element in one and returned it to me - it indeed had a crack that was very hard to see that I missed. Payed for the others. I was very satisfied. It would have taken weeks on FM with lots of additional time for pics and packaging.

^ That is why I have sold to KEH at the in-person buying events (held at my local pro camera shop). None of my stuff is ever in excellent condition by the time I want to sell it years later. More like bargain condition for the most part. It's all stuff that will show poorly with scuffs and worn away paint, compared to all the EX, EX+ stuff listed here on the B&S. And I don't want to deal with lowballers and fickle buyers who might change their minds after receiving the items.

I've been surprised by what the KEH guys took, including my ~11 year old >1M actuations Canon 1DX and my ~7 year old >1M actuations 1DXII. Mind you I don't know what I actually got for these because it was all in a bundle of stuff. Funny thing is the buyer remembered me from an event at the store back in ~2016 when I unloaded a ton of stuff. (I guess they felt they got a good deal at that time!) But it's true they base their purchases on how much inventory they have of a given item and how well that item is selling. When I inquired about the hypothetical sale of a current-model super-tele lens, they declined because their system wouldn't accept it. The buyer speculated it was likely due to 'excess inventory.' And when I checked their site, they indeed had multiple copies of that lens.

Not sure how it works at all their buying events, but at the ones I've attended at the local store, if I accepted their offer and took it as a store credit instead of cash, a 10% bonus was applied to the credit. And at their most recent events at the store, the major manufacturers also sweetened the pot by a 10-15% bonus credit on the purchase price of new gear, if you bought their products with the trade-in credit.

Interesting about the KEH in-person events, I have some miscellaneous things it would be interesting to see if they would be interested in any of them.

I used MPB last month, the first time I've used one of the mail-to sites. Simple and easy. For things they take, their offers were a little higher than KEH. I wish I had tried them earlier, I know I lost out on things I've previously sold to a local shop.

Remember that the price that KEH offers will vary based on the stock they already have on their shelves. If they already have 5, they won’t offer top dollar on #6. This comes from a video appraisal for some vintage lenses I wanted to sell. I think that it was a fair way to do business but it wasn’t enough for me to accept the offer.
I got a better price on eBay, even after the much higher fees, but that is not a guaranteed outcome either.

I should clarify that the additional manufacturers' bonuses were a tie-in that the store arranged in conjunction with their annual anniversary sales event. This may not be a common occurrence for typical KEH in-person buying events.

Lately, I’ve been impressed with Used Photo Pro. Check them out.

Add me to the list of poor experiences. It’s been a couple of years now, but they kept my gear for over 30 days before they even gave me an official quote and then they reduce the condition level (fine, they’re conservative) but they also offered less for that condition than what they quoted online buy a good margin. I’ll never sell to them again and don’t really use them anymore.

KEH always quoted such low prices, I never bothered with them.

Have you tried these?
FM(ok you said you did)
FB marketplace local?
Ebay?

I get it sometimes your just tired of looking at it, and if maximum return on investment is not the key priority, one of these services to get it gone would be the "easiest"

May I ask if this was at a Aden Camera or one of the Toronto retailers? Looking for a Canadian experience and I see they have an event coming up.

Downtown Camera takes trades but the guy even warned me they offer a pittance.

EDIT: nvm, I see a prior post saying 40% of going rate....yikes

This was 6 months ago and the OP stated MPB had zero interest in the gear he was looking to move.

Just an FYI.

I donated the gear in question to my film lab for their workshop classes. MPB and KEH were useless.

I try to avoid Keh because of the low rates, but they are quick and convenient if you need to offload quickly
