Happy New Year!

As a broad conversation starter, are you making any major changes in your service next year?

Adding (or partnering with) video?

Offering raw files?

Offering out-takes (unculled images)?

Changing your standard hours or number of photographers?

Changing major vendors (hosting / printing / albums)?

What's new for '24?

This is all something I need to think about. And I think I'll start by doing it out loud, on the go, here, now.

1. Cancelling TheKnot. They keep charging me more, without me signing anything, sending me any info. They just charge more. Every year. I'm paying way too much for it, but it has been my main source of advertising and does get me weddings. But just not enough to justify at this point. I'm not sure if I'm in touch with what new brides are looking at these days. I don't think it's facebook (which I stopped paying attention to a long time ago). I never really got into instagram (missed the boat there). Do people even search google for wedding photographers now? Somebody let me know what is the newest trend to advertise and get your name out there. I know most people are gonna say word of mouth, planners, and venues.

2. Video...... Fuck. This one is hard. I want to offer it more. I feel like a lot of couples will only book photography and video with the same person/business. But I hate editing it. I hate depending on others to shoot it. It just stresses me out. Probably need to quit offering it.

3. Raw files.... I'd consider it. I'd love to start a different brand built for speed and offer it for less cost, quick AI cull to get rid of blurry, eyes closed, and some dupes, hand over raw files, done. With mirrorless, exposure is usually really close from the get go. Auto color balance seems to be better than ever these days. Lightroom is easy enough for the newbie couples. I'd love the extra free time from editing. This is really something I may explore. I feel like the mid market pricing is so saturated right now. I may try the bulk approach instead.

4. Hours. I've already started offering a lower hour package. I used to be one price, up to 10 hours. But I've now started offering a 7 hour package for a little less, and it seems more popular so far. I'd offer even less but don't want to book something for cheap with a popular date.

5. Vendors. Sticking with Pixieset. Looks great, great integration with LR. No problems there. Printing? What's that? Albums - I've typically done GraphiStudio....but this another one of those things....the damn things cost so much I don't make much profit...and it's a hassle to make and actually get clients to approve things. Now pixieset has started to offer lower end albums. I may try one of those out and if I like it, through it in a package for the couples to make their own.

IMO, what I think might be useful is to have at least have some kind of presence on Instagram, so people (clients, guests, and vendors) can tag/mention you to give you exposure and for them to have a simple way to refer you to potential clients. This in itself can bring in some business and it's free. There's no reason not to have an IG account.

Switching to an over the shoulder strap to hold cameras. I used a belt system with a few RF L lenses and I exposed more than the sensor as my my pants were creeping down!
New Year's resolution is to do more yoga and weight lifting and be more present on IG. Small tweaks to our "all in" pricing, but generally the same. More weddings shows this winter as we only booked two from our last one. Also, considering just shooting an entire digital wedding with the RF 50mm 1.2L and perhaps just a smaller, wider RF in our bag. Maybe add some film.

As a test, we turned that feature on and a couple clients ordered self-designed books. It was a surprising exercise. Two different couples chose spreads that had wall-to-wall images that looked like more like a scrapbook, less like an elegant wedding album. Wow, are we designing albums all wrong?

Hoping to get started with weddings again this year after a multiple year break.

I think offering a minimum of 10 hours for full-day coverage will be a new norm instead of 8 hours. It leans into a more relaxed day for a day with so many things unfolding.

On one recent wedding, the bride came up to us and said how many photos of dancing do you really need? Even though she already paid for our time. Now, don't get me started on crabby venue owners who have no interest in evolving timelines and just want everyone out of the venue like a cookie cutter wedding.

I just got restarted with weddings after a couple of years break - I have to say I felt revitalized and more relaxed! I never include raw files (why?) but often do include some outtakes, for what it's worth.
