*I've been sick at home for most of the past 6 weeks with bronchitis(?), and since I can't get out and shoot, I figured I'd have a little fun*

I am in the midst of a transition back to m43 (this time from Nikon), as my event season is over, and if something pops up that requires something beyond my kit, I'll just rent. I'm a sucker for m43 and have been since my old G1.

So, I've sold off my Z8 and all but one lens and found a nice OM-1 on the board - my second go around with that camera, as well as some glass. Of the 12-40mm (still looking for a good used deal), 15mm f1.7, 20mm f1.8, 56mm f1.4, 75mm f1.8, and 40-150mm f2.8, I've not owned the 56mm and 40-150mm. This will be my third 12-40mm, fourth 15mm, second 20mm, and probably sixth 75mm.

But my biggest transgression of the day was stumbling upon a nice-looking black Pen F for $615, which I just couldn't resist. I'm going to guess number 8 on that one.

Which got me thinking about what gear I just can't give up. Off the top of my head, I've repurchased these the most:

Cameras:
Pen F - 8x
EOS R - 4x
Sony RX10 II - 4x
Leica Q - 3x
Leica CL - 3x
Nikon df - 3x
Sony A7 - 3x
Sony A850 - 3x

Lenses:
Oly 75mm - 6x
Oly 45mm f1.8 - 5x
Fuji 18-55mm - 5x
Panny 15mm - 4x
Fuji 35mm f1.4 - 4x
Sony/Zeiss 55mm f1.8 - 4x
Sigma 35mm f1.4 EX (A mount) - 3x
Oly 12-40mm - 3x
Nocticron - 3x

I'm sure there are others, but those come first to mind,

How about you all? What gear is your bad habit? Which ex do you still long for in the night? Who can you just not quit?

I rarely replace something I sold with the same thing. Sometimes I will replace a lens at some future date with an upgraded version.

That list is on the verge of insanity. Can't say I do anything remotely like that. I felt dumb for having to rebuy the Z9 once

I'm not going to deny living on the verge of insanity, but it has little to do with my gear rotation. :-)

Sometimes gear that you bought when new doesn't end up representing a good value, but as it becomes "last year's model" it may make more sense. Lenses are probably easier to explain away. The first 55mm went away with the first A7, but I purchased it again years later with the a7III, and then later again with the a7IV. Or the Fuji 18-55, which just happened to come along as a kit lens.

But I'll be the first to admit that I jump around too much. Personality flaw. Luckily my only one. ;-)

I've re-bought M43 twice now. had it when the kids were babies and once toddlers it didn't cut it for me, so we're talking ten years ago now. I had an EM5 back then and have an OM5 now. 45 1.8 and 75 1.8 are my repeat offenders on the lens side for m43s.

I've had a few Sony and Fuji repeat offenders too, when I went from Sony A7rII to Xt2, to A7III to Xt4. I tend to gravitate toward the Sony 55 1.8 and 85 1.8 and the Fuji 35 1.4 and 18-55 kit.

Most recently, had a Nikon ZF that I took back and thought I'd be happier with the Z8 handling. But at the end of the day felt like it was too big and I wouldn't grab it for walking around so took Z8 back and picked up a Zf again and may look to pick up a well used Z7ii or Z7 for my landscape set up.

In the process of selling an M10 that I acquired in a trade for my previous Q3 with the intent to pick up a Q2 (hopefully reporter).

As in the song by Passenger... "you only know you love her when you let her go"

I'll also mention that it is sometimes business driven for me. This year I was shooting m43 over the summer for hiking and traveling. Then I'd lined up several back-to-back hybrid gigs in the fall that made purchasing into Nikon Z and then selling make more sense than renting.

Along with that is a head vs. heart tug of war. Using the Z8 was amazing for getting the job done and paying the bills. But shooting with something like the Leica Q is a unique creative experience.

The better me would resist the conflation of business and pleasure. Maybe someday.

I use FF for weddings/portraits and m4/3 for birds/ wildlife. Been that way for nearly a decade. I have a lot of shorter than bird/wildlife focal length m4/3 lenses that are mint because I simply never use them. So, adding more of those goes against my grain.
However the “one” lens that I’ve always had an irrational desire for is the Pana-Leica 42.5 F/1.2.
Just can’t let myself commit though because I know once the honeymoon was over it would be sitting in a closet with all the other unused camera items for 99.9% of the time.

I too find it very hard to let go of camera gear but it results in me never buying or selling anything. I used the Olympus C-7070 for 15 years until an impending overseas trip forced me to finally move on and buy the E-M1 II and 12-100mm f/4. I had previously considered the E-330, X-Pro1, LX100, Pen F, and GX9.

Wow. That’s, um, something. I’d think that by the time you were on purchase #4, you’d just hang on to it.

My worst offender was the Canon EF 100mm f/2 which I owned 3 times. I had it as a fast telephoto option on my 30D, but it was a bit too long on APS-C, so I sold it. Bought another when I got a 1Ds II and liked it on full frame. Sold it when I went mirrorless with m4/3. Bought my 3rd copy when I got an A7 II and I adapted it. Worked great.

That would certainly seem logical.

I rebought a Canon 24-85/3.5-4.5 lens. The first one wasn't sold though, but given away as a gift to a friend in need of a standard lens. Couldn't help buying another copy of that lens - and a rare silver version, to boot - when a chance arose, around two years later.

I've never bought brand new gear and sold it off only to rebuy it, so I find the first post hard to relate to. I wouldn't have called it insanity, but it strikes me as an impulsive way to buy gear and a reliable way to lose money.

My problem is that I buy gear and never sell it. Hoarding is a reliable way to lose money too.

Wireless microphones.

Have 2 pairs of the original rodes, one set of the v2 with the 2 transmitters, on the verge of thinking of getting either the dji one or the rode wireless pro.

Oh and lights, like those portable LED lights.

Thanks to FM, I've been guilty of selling and rebuying stuff multiple times as well. On top of my head the ones I remember

- OM-1 (3 times! Love the camera but keep selling to go back to FF and then I start to miss it again)
- A7RV (3 times. Once to go to OM-1. Second time to try Fuji again and finally recently for Z8)
- Sony 200-600 (2 times. Love the idea of the lens but in practice it is too large and heavy so I always end up not using it.

Hmmm. It’s no longer a profession for me, just a hobby — or maybe a passion. I have always been interested in gear. But gear that I enjoy using. More recently new and different lenses, and with the Z system there have been more than a few to experiment with. So I decide to try them out and some become more permanent additions than others. The money I lose is more than made up by the joy from the journey. Hobbies cost money.

PS: I realize there is one Z lens I had sold and later repurchased— the 50/1.8.

Some regrets, but never bought a lens twice.
Most regrets about a unique old PC-Nikkor 28mm f/4.0 (from about 1976). This one was modified for tilt and it was chipped as well.
