I received my Voigtländer Nokton 28/1.5 Black Type I this morning and I took some sample shots today with my stock A7CII during a long lunch break. All shots were either at wide open f1.5 or at f8.

I exported these from Raw with C1 Pro (16.3.4) and applied some presets that I like (used different ones on different shots) and I did some exposure adjustments. Sharpening was at default for A7CII and noise reduction was set off (all shots were at ISO 100 anyway).

I found my copy to be perfectly aligned for hard infinity with my accurate Rayqual adapter

Hi Juha,
Always nice to see Tokyo and thanks for your initial reactions and the abundance of samples.
That Burger Mania seems delicious!!

It looks like it available at CameraQuest.
(No financial association, except for receiving Cosina lenses for review)

I was about to, but held off. I kinda want to know how heavy it feels on camera. I have a BP MP .58 which would be perfect, but there is an almost 40% difference in weight between aluminium and brass, and you'd feel that using the camera all day. It may unbalance the package.
The aluminum lens may be the better user, while the brass the better fondler...

I’m looking for a new lens wider than my 50. I was excited by the 1.5 and this thread but Steven has a pic of it on camera and it looks about as large as my 50. Wanted smaller. Looks great though.

Yes here is the Voigtlander page for the lens:

https://www.cosina.co.jp/voigtlander/en/vm-mount/nokton-vintage-line-28mm-f1-5-asphrical/

It is 54mm in diameter and 45.5mm long, which is very close in size to the Leica 50 cron APO, which is 53 mm in diameter and 47mm long. It is a little shorter than the Leica 50 lux Asph which is 53.5mm in diameter and 52.5mm in length. The Voigtlander 50 f/1.5 II is a little fatter with a 55.3mm diameter, but notably shorter at 36.9mm long.

I do like the rendering pretty much. Also the vignetting wasn't anywhere near as noticeable as on the 28/2.8 and 28/2 II. I also found it to be performing very well shooting against the sun.

Great feedback, Juha! Today, I tried out the pre-production copy on the Sony sensor, and thought it performed well as seen in your stopped down images. While it doesn't perform optimally on a thicker sensor stack, it still outperforms other Nokton lenses I've tested in the past. When wide open, it's surprisingly sharp even in the mid-field, and by f/2.8-4, the corners start to look quite decent. The optimal performance is achieved around f/5.6-8, making it excellent for landscapes when stopped down, even on a Sony.

I'm eager to share my tests, but I've been advised to wait and only post tests from the production model. I should have it next Wednesday.

How did you feel the camera handled/balanced w the lens? Do you think the extra 40% that the brass version weighs will adversely effect that?

I'm not certain, but the lens is quite small for a fast 28mm. The matte finish on the Type I is attractive and should go well with the Leica Black Chrome. However, since I like the appearance of brass over time and most of my Leica bodies are black paint, I'll choose the Type II despite its higher weight.

Attach the focusing lever by removing the focusing tab cover screw and replacing it with the metal focusing lever.

I'm unsure about how that will function but I guess it's useful for those how prefer screw instead of tab, but I believe it's only included with the Type II style. I might be mistaken.

Would like to see this on an M10R / M11 vs. the Summilux of a Q2 / Q3.

Yes only the type II. The focus stick inserts into the tab. If you remove the stick, that provided screw covers the hole in the tab.

Today it was raining and cloudy all day but I went to Nakano and took some more samples with the 28/1.5 on my Sony A7CII in low light at the narrow streets that have many eateries/bars. I used my CV close focus adapter II today but I didn't utilize the helicoid to focus closer in almost any of the shots. All shots were taken wide open. The lens is indeed quite sharp right from wide open at any distance. The bokeh is not always the smoothest type on the Sony sensor at least but I like the way it looks. I'm quite happy with the lens so far

https://photos.app.goo.gl/4Jy1BnGRSXVowkh58

I exported these via C1 Pro and used a various filmic presets on them.

Great photos! I wasn’t interested in the lens but you could sell me on those samples, the rendering looks great. It’s modern but there’s just an hint of nervousness, halation and swirl to make it not boring, the falloff is quite good too.

@Juha Great samples. It’s so much cheaper in Japan from MAP, but it won’t let me do an oversees order. I’ll just wait.

Always lovely to see your work. This lens looks like it has the type of character I want in a modern lens.

Did you try buying directly from their shop or through Buyee? I believe Map does not sell outside Japan via their online shop and they promote the Buyee forwarding service for this instead. I believe they have an eBay store but likely with only a limited selection of items (another FM member previously posted about getting them to put something on their eBay store for him to buy from them, but unsure how willing they are to repeat this).

If Buyee doesn't work, there are other forwarding services available. It's possible Map knows when an order is through Buyee, which may cause them to honor manufacturer imposed geographic shipping restrictions (I'm taking a guess here). When researching this a while back other forwarding services mentioned something about using a delivery address and recipient information so it wouldn't raise such suspicions. Just a question of whether it's worth the time, effort, hassle and potential complications if a return is required.

I believe Fred has used Buyee for purchasing some smaller items, accessories, etc. But I don't recall if anyone here has successfully used Buyee to purchase a just released product, or anything Voigtlander.

I just tried the Buyee option but said this item is not eligible for overseas buyers. Yes, it is considerably cheaper, oh well.
