p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · WARNING: A7cII / A7cr EVF

I’ve been following another thread regarding the difficulty seeing clearly through the evf in bright sunny conditions. I’m not sure if this was the case with the original A7c or not. With many of the purchases done through online retailers, the buyer doesn’t have the opportunity to demo the camera first hand. Even those who made in-store purchases, unless they went outside on a sunny day they would not experience the issue. Yes, you have a return window but this time of year if the buyer didn’t actually use it outside they would never know it until after the return period ended.

I wanted this to be the upgrade to the A7c that my sad eyes would get some relief from, but from what I’ve read, I’m not so sure that is the case.
I have the convenience of having a brick and mortar store in my city, and I think a trip on the next beautiful sunny day is in order.
A test outside should give me a hands on experience to see if in fact it’ll work for me.
The bigger problem I have is I live in Portland, Or and if history is any indication, we may not see the sun again for months.

Regardless, I would encourage anyone considering the A7cII or A7CR, who has the chance to test the camera under bright, sunny conditions to do so. Might save online purchasers from a return window issue.

Maybe it’s not that big of an issue, but we recently purchased a new vehicle, test drove it on a nice newly paved road, smooth as could be. Quiet, no problem.
Drove it home on normal roads and could hardly hear each other talk- oops! Live and learn!

Change the eye piece to a soft extender, problem solved. Be creative with your purchases.

I sold my a7Cii, largely because of the EVF, also for the lack of customization and handling - I rather carry a larger a7RV with a big and bright EVF set up the way I want.

But you are right, there is no substitute for truly trying a piece of gear in a variety of use cases.

I ordered the soft-extender. They come from China, so I'll probably need to wait another week for delivery.

I sure hope that it works as I find the A7CR almost unusable in bright sunlight (admittedly, I generally choose to avoid shooting in bright sunlight, but there are times when it cannot be avoided).

I have really mixed feelings about this camera. While, in one sense, it is a technical marvel, the lack of eye-cup and low-resolution EVF and LCD make me feel like I am shooting a ten year old camera. The small, recessed buttons and new On-off switch just add to the frustration of shooting this camera. I shoot back-button focus on the A1 and A7R5; and, when switch from those cameras to the A7CR, I miss some initial shots as I fumble to adjust to the new relative location of this button. For me, the price is high for the compactness and weight. I should have rented prior to purchasing.

To each their own but I have had no issues using the EVF on my A7CR at all in bright sunny condition.

Jeff, it is the same or at least, similar case as the early A1, in which the EVF could get dimmed if you shoot in a position when the sun hits the sensor of the viewfinder although indirectly? BTW, Am***n sells that soft extended eyecup and it is readily available.

Yesterday I ordered the Kiwifotos extended eyecup from China, via eBay. It remains to be seen whether it will work for me, but it's cheap enough to be worth a try. Try as I might, I couldn't find any alternatives for the A7CII or CR. Lots for the A7C, which doesn't help.

The reaction to this eyecup might vary between those who wear eyeglasses and those who don't. The Kiwifotos eyecup is unusually deep at 16.2mm. I'm wondering whether this distance from the EVF will be a problem, but I'll just have to wait and see.

Brian

Yeah, I experienced the A1 EVF dimming when it was first released, but this acts differently. I ordered the soft extended eyecup from Amazon a week ago. Tracking shows that it is in customs in China, right now.

I was concerned about the distance from the EVF, but I found a single, independent review from Google searches and this individual said it was not a problem. We'll see. I'll post comments when I receive it.

Consider yourself lucky! When I researched the problem, I found quite a number of photographers that had the same experience that I am having. Perhaps, it is also related to facial topography, eye-socket insets, etc, so, different individuals will have different experiences.

It all depends on what you are comparing to. If you come from an a67xx or an a7C, or if you shoot largely off the back LCD, then the a7CR/ii is certainly "good enough", and keep on going.

If you are coming from an a1 or a7RV then you need to completely reset your expectations of shooting experience, from EVF, to buttons and customization, to even on/off button. I have an on-and-off wright wrist problem and I found the on/off switch location of the a7Cii hurst my wrist.

The a7CR/ii are a marvel of technical accomplishment and miniaturization - the output is top-shelf - but it is just not for me. I cannot wait for the a9iii's erg improvements to come to a7V, a1ii and a7RVI/Vii.

To anyone having issues, try adjusting your EVF brightness manually (Setup > Finder/Monitor > Viewfinder Brightness). I have mine set to manual and +2.

+1 on the evf!

given the low res on the evf, i would rely on the rear lcd for shooting. but the low res on the rear lcd is just as discouraging.

can anyone comment on the brightness of the rear lcd; is it viewable under sunlight?

not to worry; the 3rd iteration will have just enough improvements to entice an upgrade; marketing ploy 101. ))

Unless one is manually focusing, how is the current viewfinder stopping you from getting the shot?

I don't think and hope so!
A bigger viewfinder will make the whole body bigger.
People who don't like the actual models don't really need it.
It's only a technically unrealsitic "dream" for a camera sized like this.
Sony has enough other models to meet your needs.

Since I move between indoors, night and sunny outdoors, I have the C4 Delete button programmed on all my cameras to toggle between Manual and Sunny Weather. This also works well on the A7CR and the Sunny Weather setting is plenty bright.

The disappointing thing about the low resolution on both the EVF and LCD is that I can't really assess critical focus on this camera; whereas, I can on the A1 and A7R5. On my first outing with the A7CR, I thought I might have a focusing problem, but was relieved when I viewed the files on my computer to see that my focus points were actually pin-sharp.

Wait... so you have never used an A7CII/R but you are warning people against them?

I use my "old" A7c under the bright Florida sun almost every day of the year and haven't had any issues at all so far. Am I missing something?

It almost feels like some people criticize the new A7C iterations just because they don't like the cameras. Sony has plenty of options for everyone. We have plenty of A7CR/A7CII users here but this is the first time I have heard of anyone complaining about EVF and that too from a person who's never owned one.
