Just due to AF reasons I don't even use my 1.8 anymore. I literally just keep it as a "break glass in case of emergency's" smaller 85.

I have the 105E and the Z 85/1.8. The Z is sharper, and the bokeh is still very good. Overall itís an outstanding lens. The 105E has a nicer overall rendering and can obviously blur the background more. Because the 85/1.8 is so good and the 105 is affordable used (I paid $1000 for my mint copy), I have no desire for the Z85/1.2 or the Plena.

I generally have preferred the 105 for headshot type imaging. The 85 was nice for couples, but of course worked fine for head-and-shoulder as well as headshots, just a little bit too "in the face" for best subject comfort; and of course the 105 is fine for couples too as long as you have enough space to back off appropriately. Back when, I almost always found the 135 either too long or too short for what I wanted to do, was always stepping closer or trying to back off further than I had room for. I don't think that was the lens' problem per se, just my lack of faculty with it. Anyway, the above are why I've held off on both the Plena and 85/1.2...

Iíve heard the 50 1.8 was very nice but was wondering about the 85. Wanting a faster than f4 prime the 85 1.8 was tempting. The 1.2 is so damn expensive but I wondered how much ďworse the 1.8 was at that price.

It really is all about compromises--and balance of cost VS gain. I am a sucker for fast portrait glass--but then I end up stopping down most of the time working in close (headshots, tight on the face). Then the 85mm f/1.8S or even the 105 f/2.8 macro do the job well. Full length portraits wide open are another story--and certainly one where AF accuracy would be among top priorities if this is something you're doing a lot of. When I was shooting weddings, I had most of the F-mount choices at one time or another (135 f/1.8 Sigma, 105 f/1.4 sigma, 85mm f/1.4D, 200mm f/2VR), but the compromises of weight/size and $$$ tied up in equipment don't add up at the moment.

Anyway, that's what I've been telling myself to keep from buying any of these 3 lenses for now. Is there a chance the the 85 or Plena will be under $2k used next year and I might sell the 85mm f/1.8S and 105 Macro to get 2/3 of the way there? Never say never

This guy did a pretty decent comparison video of the 85 S's --

About 5 minutes in is when he gets to the images. The way he used them, the backgrounds are a little far off, but definitely shows the bokeh differences wide in a "practical use" situation -- and admittedly I feel the differences while notable, were pretty small for most practical imaging uses. It could be different for closer subjects with closer backgrounds.

Ricci does a better job here at about 10 minutes in -- he compares the 1.2 to the 1.8 at both 1.2 and 1.8 -- and you can better see the bokeh advantage to the 1.2 lens at either aperture -- but is it enough of a difference to justify the cost and weight? For me, I'm becoming less interested in the 1.2, but respect others will want what the 1.2 is offering here regardless of size, weight or cost:

If I ever get a ZF, I'll probably put the 1.8 on it and not the 1.2 for walk around stuff. The 1.8 is still a very good lens, just stopped using it when I got the 1.2 because well the 1.2 is a 1.2 (also autofocuses better)

1.8 looks fantastic in that video. You could own the 50 and 85 1.8 for less than the 50 1.2 and for much less than the 85 1.2. Whether one should do that instead of the 1.2 idk. But Iím tempted.

Did you also look at Riccis video? His example a little better underscored bokeh differences when there's light in the background.

Another item I should probably add to the test is the 105 Z macro compared to the 105/1.4. I may be able to provide some thoughts and examples on those two later this week.

Depends on budget/priorities and what you do. I have the 50 1.2, 85 1.2, 105 1.4 and I'm still looking at the Plena because it's basically in my wheel house and I used the 135 1.8GM a lot when I was on Sony.

The flip side of the coin is with any contemporary Z lens, you can buy it, use it for a 6 onths or a year and then sell it for basically what amounts to a week or two of rental fee as your loss.

I'm looking forward to the test shots from @suteetat. Everything I see from the Plena is lovely. I'm also curious what else Nikon will come out with in the tele space over the next 2 years:

200 F/2 TC?
100-200 F/1.8 S?
105/1.2 or 1.8 Plena?
A reduced size 100/120-300 2.8S?

Whow knows what they'll do. Any of those will be very spendy, and not up my alley, but will be enjoyable to see no less.

My guess is that Nikon will come up with a 100-200mm f2.0 TC.

Cheers,
Bernard

Of course it all depends on what you want to do with your equipment but my take on the 105 is it eliminates the need for the 85 and the 135 at the same time. I do add back in the 85 1.8S for light, portable solution but if I need obliterating bokeh, the 105 is it. I question the additional bulk and cost to do a hair splitting exercise myself. I do not believe any of these newer lenses will make one a better photographer and it seems the primary benefit is to impress other photographers with the latest.

This sums my view up pretty well too. I don't have the 85mm f1.2S, but I love everything I see of it. With that said, after the honeymoon phase I would still use the 105mm more simply because I prefer the focal length. I have the Sigma 85 and 135 and will keep those for the infrequent desire to shoot those focal lengths. If I preferred 85mm over 105mm or did more indoor portraits, I would have sold the lot and bought the 85mm 1.2S.

Can't go wrong with any of these lenses, but the 105mm is the cost-effective option and the "middle focal length" can eliminate the need for these other options.

Sure he used different brands and not Z-lenses, but these will still give you a pretty good idea of the differences with portrait shoots with both headshots and full body portraits. These videos are great because it shows how insane we are to have multiple lenses that clients won't see the difference between!

and

One other that's handy is this video if you can ignore the smoke detector chirps in the background. Again, not with Z lenses but it does show real portraits that have comparable conditions and perspectives.

Easy there bud, not all of us earn a living having to do portraits. There is a lot more to choosing these lenses than just that.
