p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Leica Q2/3 image quality distinctive?

If I watch one more influencer video I blow a fuse! Been noodling over this for weeks!

Wondering if anyone has experience with the Leica Q2/3 - more specifically whether the image quality (color, micro-contrast, overall rendering...) is "better" compared to for instance an A7RV + Sony 24mm f1.4 GM or Sigma 24mm f2 ("Sigmacron")?

I'm trying to decide on my travel setup. I shoot RAW, but would be interested if a Q3 could get me to an amazing image quality faster and consistently. I guess this is another question on whether the "Leica look" is real... in RAW. This is NOT a question about haptics, portability, ethos...

Bonus question: are the Q2/3 35mm and 50mm crops any good compared to a Sigma 35 or 50mm f2...

Thank you!!

Better? no. Different? Yes.

There's more than one *Leica Look*. The Q has a look but you don't have to like it.

I have the Q2, Q3 and A7R5 and A7CR. I can make great images out of any of them. I generally really like the Q files, but I don't like 26-28mm as my main lens, so I use the Sony's more.

On the "Bonus question: are the Q2/3 35mm and 50mm crops any good compared to a Sigma 35 or 50mm f2..."

It's widely reported by the reviewers that the Q actually has a 24mm lens and the image is cropped to 28mm after correction for distortions. Note cropping from 24mm to 35mm is like you are only using the central APSC area of the senor, while cropping to 50mm is like you are using a micro four-third sensor. Unless you believe in magic, there is no way an APSC or m43 file can match a FF sensor with the proper lens in image quality. I wouldn't pay $6000 for a camera to use it regularly as APSC or m43. For emergency, sure.

PS: If the Q actually has a 24mm lens and the image is cropped to 28mm after correction for distortions, it imply the Leica file is never full frame, and only a 28/24=1.17 crop. It seems Leica then interpolate the cropped file back to 61MP.

Different yes - better it depends on what you favor. I used to own a Q2 and currently own a Sony A7RV. The Sony is more sophisticated and will generate more keeps in difficult situations. The leica files are very nice and if I could I would own both but I have trouble justifying that to myself.

IMO:
The shooting experience is better with Q2/Q3 cameras. Crop modes are always worse than using the appropriate focal length. The difference may not always be noticeable. I do not use crop modes in Q2/Q3. I like Leica Perspective Control (Q3 only), but it is only supported in ACR, still waiting on LrC support .
I have never really compared the IQ of a7rV and Q2/Q3. I am happy with the output of both.

Lots of good answers above. I used Leica almost exclusively for 40 years and there was certainly a case for the 'Leica look' and the sheer quality of the optical engineering over much of that time. Today the playing field is more even and GM lenses, Zeiss lenses and others produce comparable or better results, I guess largely due to computer assisted design and manufacture.

I used a Q on trial for a while but did not like the way the lens rendered and so returned it. I found that portraits never looked good, for example, and subjects did not really like them when they saw them. IMHO it was not as good as the Leica lenses I had known and loved.

In your shoes I would be thinking about an A7CR with a high quality light weight lens giving similar form factor and picture quality, and in addition way more flexibility, much MUCH better AF and other useful features, IBIS etc.

The 24 GM has been a trusty sidekick of mine since 2019, but I yearn for a Q2 or Q3 always. Not the most scientific analysis ahead, so maybe others may agree or disagree.

IMO the contrast and color signature of Leica, Zeiss, and Voigtlander are all OUTSTANDING, but each is tuned slightly differently. I think the color saturation and contrast goes in this order : Zeiss (most contrast and saturation) > Leica > Voigtlander (least contrast and saturation)

When I pour through the samples of Leica Qs, the 28/1.7 summilux looks like it renders more like a Zeiss lens with its insane contrast and structure in OOF areas. It reminds me of the 35/1.4 ZM or Batis 40, and a lot less like the 28 or 35s of Leica Ms.

After using the 24 GM, I think the color saturation and contrast falls in between samples I’ve seen of Leica lenses, and my own experiences with Zeiss. Similar colors between the 24 GM and Zeiss lenses, but slightly less contrast.

Where you want to end up in the colors and contrast spectrum is subjective, but I think the 24 GM holds its own against the Leica 28/1.7, and that’s without considering the advantages (or disadvantages) of a interchanges mirrorless system behind it. I like high contrast and saturation for landscapes and architecture, but prefer Voigtlanders for people photography.

I’ve settled on alternating between the 24 GM and 40 Batis instead of picking up a x100v, a nice 35mm lens, repurchasing an RX1Rii, or selling half my kit to afford a Leica, partially for the reasons you mentioned. 24-28-35 focal lengths are different than 40-50-55, and no amount of high res cropping can make up for that difference

I have owned bot the Q and Q2 and for many years also shot with digital Leica M's. I finally sold the Q2 a few months ago and now use the Sony A1 with the Batis 25 as the nearest thing to if for street photography. Leica Q images are excellent and the simplicity and size of the camera are wonderful but it really can't compete with the Sony for versatility and especially with AF. The Batis 25 is an excellent lens and I find the combo renders in a similar way to the Leica Q2

Thank you so much to everybody who responded and shared their experiences. So many Q and M users here! This is way more input than I was hoping for, and I think it’s going to cure me from my GAS for now. A7RV + Sigmacrons 24 - 50 - 90 it is!

The Q2M has a very distinctive look to its contrast and monochrome interpretation of the color world. I loved the camera but hated its lens. I shot several images from it and the RX1Rii and a7Riii and made an LR preset that largely emulates the Q2M rendition. I am happy using the Sony cameras and that preset, when I want to achieve that “look.”

I am a little late for this thread…

I am going to respectfully disagree with you on this one. I’ve shot the GM 24 since launch, and owned multiple copies of the ZM 35/1.4, 35 Lux FLE and the Q2. And also lots of CV glass (at least ten of their lenses).
In terms of colors/micro-contrast, I found the FLE and 50 Lux to have “better” micro-contrast and color than the Q2 (at least centrally. Outside the central part of the frame, the 35 Lux and 50 Lux are not consistent until stopped down).

After having owned those 2, I was initially a bit disappointed with punch of the Q2. I checked my impression with Fred, who had the same experience. He also found his 28/1.4 Lux to have a little extra juice over the Q2 lux. I haven’t shot the 28/1.4 Lux so have no comment on that, but trust Fred. Fred also tested the Q2 lux, and I think he found it to be 25.7mm or so uncorrected, but someone else can dig up that thread and see if my memory serves.

In addition to the difference in micro-contrast, there is also a different warmer/more tonal digital feel to the Q2 files in my experience. I like the Q2 files very much though, and better than the GM in terms of color and contrast and overall tonal rendition. I made a more extensive comparison a GM 24 + a7x and Q2 in the post linked above.

But, long story short, the 35/50 Lux have some of the best micro-contrast centrally I’ve experienced. The new APO’s from CV or Leica may be better yet, but I haven’t shot them. I’ve owned the GM 35 as well, and while I think it’s as sharp as any of them, the files feel flatter to me. You’ll read that somewhat frequently with that lens. Similar to the 55 ZA, though it resolves quite well. I also shot the CV 35/1.7, another lenses in terms of pure resolution is really special and neck-and-neck with the ZM 35/1.4, but again Fred did crops tome time ago and the CV 35/1.7 has less micro-contrast. Files definitely feel flatter. Some will just process around that or aren’t that sensitive to it, but I have found you can’t really bring back what isn’t there. But that’s another discussion.

I ran test side by side between a 35 FLE and ZM 35 on a modded sensor (so native performance). Again, centrally, the FLE was on par or even a bit ahead with ZM 35/1.4 at portrait distance, but is had more LoCal, a different color palate, and falls apart outside the central area. The FLE needs till 2.8 to resolve deep into the corners, at least at 42mp.

Realistically, when shooters talks about a Leica look, at least with modern Leica’s, much of it comes down to tonal rendition and contrast. This is why I often enjoy Voigt’s less than some. Zeiss and CV’s and GM’s are often objectively comparable or best Leica’s, but in real world shooting files often feel different. And a shooter might find that they prefer GM’s to Leica or Zeiss to CV, etc. And each lens needs to be taken on it’s own basis too. And not just in terms of sample variation. Zeiss glass isn’t really consistent in terms of tonal palate and micro- contrasts between the Loxias, ZM, Batis and ZA in similar specs even when they are all being manufactured and sold at the same time in my experience.

For my preference/experience:

35 FLE/ZM35/1.4> Q28 > GM 24 > CV

So, to get back to it. I think the Q2 has a distinct look which is different than some other Leica M lenses currently in production. Perhaps that’s because of different optical formula or coating or glass or whatever. I found the 50 and 35 Lux rendered very much like each other, and those files look like the 28 Lux to me as well. The Q2 has s nice look but is not fast or distinctive. That camera is more about the small size + lovely usability and build with a solid lens in a FL we don’t have a lot of options.

I like the RX1 Sonnar better. The Q2 does have a look, but not a super strong one. I always like Leica’s coatings, esp for b/w.

To me, it is not only about staring at the small differences in the files in terms of micro-contrast, tonality, colors, etc, the big difference between a Leica Q/2/3 and a Sony A7xx + G/GM prime is the shooting experience and the art of simplification. Most of us can pretty easily nowadays make a file look the way we want.

Leica Q removes as much as possible and strives for a compact and premium package. Yes, you pay extra for the brand (just look at spare battery prices).

The Sony, e.g. a7RV, gives you all the options and the kitchen sink. Customization galore. Better video. But it is a bigger package. But a RV with a 24/2.8 or 40/2.5 is a pretty small package as well. At half the price (used).

I love a lot about the Q, but I've owned the Q, Q2, and Q2M - I want to adore it, but I just can't live with the 28mm focal length as my only option.

Why not throw in a bit of inspiration, James Popsy. He used to shoot Leica, Fuji, etc but settled on a a7RV + 40/2.5 G

Unrelated to the subject, but this caught my attention: someone who "settled on a a7RV + 40/2.5 G" sounds remarkable. Does this actually happen in real life?

Can you elaborate on why this is "remarkable"? I always think a serious photographer can only choose the gear that is suitable for the job. It might as well be a a7RV + 40/2.5 G. If the shooting content changes, you can change gear.

I thought the "settled" meant an exclusive use of a camera system with a 40 mm lens that wasn't even a very fast lens. I thought this was unusual in the sense that either this was a highly experienced photographer who had already tried everything and "settled" on a certain focal lengh, or someone with very specific/special photography needs. It wasn't clear from the context that the system this photographer "settled" on was only chosen for a certain project, that is, was used temporarily, as you explained.
