p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · You Latest Print?

I have been at this photography thing for many years now. While doing some "Spring Cleaning", I came across a camera that has been in a drawer for the past 15 years. It was my old Sony DSC-S85 that I puchased in 2001! It still had a Sony Memory Stick in it. I don't have any reader that supports that old Memory Stick, so I ordered a new battery + charger, and used a cable to upload the old pics from my camera. I was able to recover 3 awesome pictures of me, my spouse and my kid. These pics had been taken 15 years ago and had been stored on that card all these years!

That got me thinking. Turns out I only have 3 prints adorning my walls. One of those prints had been taken with that very Sony DSC-S85 over 20 years ago (4"×6" print). The other two were 16"×20" prints I took with my Nikon D70 back in 2004 or 2005.

I have owned a ton of cameras since then, but I have no prints on my walls of any camera I have owned since 2005! Granted, I've done a ton of weddings and made prints/books for the brides and grooms, however I haven't printed anything for me since circa 2005!

I'm curious to know how many other folks here either rarely print or print regularly. Have you gone through a complete ownership cycle of a camera without ever printing an image made with it? Which camera have you made the most prints from? Have you ever had any pictures printed at all? Please share!

p.s. The old Sony Memory Stick was 1st or 2nd generation. It was the thick one that won't work on newer card readers that can read "newer" memory sticks. That old DSC-S85 powered up with the new battery and behaves like it did when it was new!

While I have not had any prints in the last several years, I have over a dozen prints at my home and office. They are mostly wildlife and are canvas, framed and 12x18” or larger. I had them processed and framed at local camera shop.below is one example that is on our family room wall.

Since 2017 I always produce a calendar with my landscape photos which is quite popular among my friends and relatives who buy it for themselves or as a gift for someone else. That helps my photography tremendously, because I know I have to have at least 13 really good photos at the end of the year which is more difficult than it may sound...

Aside from that, I have 5 big prints on my walls. I am already thinking about replacing some of them with newer, better photos.

I make both photo books and prints. I have somewhere around 20 prints hanging in the house and many more that are mounted and put into acid free boxes. My prints range from 16x20 right up to my largest hanging at 72x40.

My feeling is an image is not completed until it is printed.

I print all the time. I started out with film and had my own darkroom. For me, a physical print is the end journey of the effort. I have a wall that gets regularly rotated, otherwise I have a mix of my own and others works around the house and office. Today I have an Epson SC900 and print up to 16x20.

I truly don't understand why people would be into photography and not print their work. It would be like watching Chris Nolan movies on your cell phone instead of at IMAX.

Most things that bring joy involve a lot of work. That’s where the fun comes from…accomplishment.

Yes it is....but gets easier with more time.....I think the rewards equal the challanges and frustrations. It adds another facet to your photography. Screen only images have a very short lifetime.

I've always printed or had prints made, on and off, for years. I also see the print as the final step for any worthwhile image. From image capture, through editing and final finishing touches, the vision that I have in my mind is always a print on a wall.

Below are a few snaps of a gallery showing about a year and a half ago. The source images combine m43 and Sony 35mm-sensor sized RAW images, and edited to taste. The prints that made it to the gallery cover the years from 2012 until more recently.

We also have somewhere around 10 larger prints hanging in the house. These are mostly canvasses, the largest of which is 48" x 36". Larger prints make up the majority, although we do have one print hung that's roughly 24" x 18". If I want to rotate them more often, I'm going to have to get off my back side and work at it a bit more!

I started printing years ago, first outsourced, then on my own printer, then some outsourced again. Some of the early ones were not great (either the photo, or the print quality, or both), some I still keep.

Sold a few at exhibitions. I have four currently hanging in my house, plan to add a couple.

The first is the one in my hallway, at 180x120 cm (70 by 47 inches), printed of course by a lab, and rather expensive!

The second one is in my son's room...he's a bit too young to appreciate it at 3, but it does have a castle.

Since moving I haven't reinstalled my printer, I really should do it. Also plan to print more books, the couple ones I did are looked at regularly.

Very informative thread. I'm wondering whether people can share the method and materials they use to hang photographs in the house. Thanks!

All of mine are canvas prints that are developed, wood framed and ready to hang. Dan’s Camera in Allentown, PA, does my prints. They have also printed some on photo paper and framed them.

Good question...our house went through a big remodel the past few years, and I'm going through paralysis by analysis deciding what images I want to print for my home office, as well as a few other places. I'm oftentimes a sucker for metal prints at our house, which aren't cheap if you get them big, so I need to carve out some time to analyze the wall space, see what makes sense, and go through my top images I want to print and get it done.

My last print was done yesterday, it was shot 10 years ago and is now framed on the wall, it’s more of a sentimental shot rather than something shot perfectly.

I try to once a week for printer maintainence reasons.

If you keep your consumables cheap, it’s easier to print on a whim. Some printers are good at this (ET-8550 or L18100) because you can still print 13x19” and the inks are of decent quality while not being too expensive

If you have a spectrometer you can buy cheaper papers and profile them. For example there are many people dumping canon photo papers in my area recently

I buy ikea frames, they have a good selection and are mostly good enough. It’s nice that they come with acid free matting. They use plastic in the front instead of museum glass, but if the prints fade in a couple of years I figure I can just print something different to put in. For this reason the UV protection of museum glass is not that critical for me

It’s simple enough to put the photo into the frame and you put a screw in the wall to hold the frame.

I have not figured out what’s the best way to light the prints

I love printing, I have a 44 wide printer and often rotate images throughout the house.
I love canvas and satin papers. My clients love it when I give them a large print as a bonus.
