M10 vs Q3

ever since i got my M10m i find myself using the M10 less and less, so much so that i'm now considering getting rid of it and replacing it with a Q3. [separately also looking at upgrading my M10m to an M11m]

my thinking here is i can just focus on the monochrom camera for most of my stuff, and then when i need color i can carry the Q3 besides the M [as opposed to two Ms as i do today] which will be a smaller and lighter package.

while i'm not super used to 28mm i dont think it's a big issue, actually i'd say its a good thing since it'll be better for indoor family shots or that kind of stuff than 35mm. another big bonus ive been thinking of is that when handing the camera to others they always have trouble using the M since its manual focus etc so i end up not doing that, but with a Q its "just" a point and shoot so its easier for anyone to use if needed.

i think my main worry is image quality, i've had the M10 for like 5 years or something like that, i'm super used to how those files look and how they can be edited. is the Q3 up to par with the M for colors etc? while i've never had issue with 24MP i do like the fact that the Q3 has a lot more resolution so i can easily crop without worrying about loss of resolution if i want something tighter than 28mm

what do you think? does my thinking make sense or should i just keep the M? are there any other downsides i may be missing here?

I say keep the M10. You preserve all of your options. Both cameras can use the same lenses and all other accessories. This makes a more cohesive kit overall.

Unless, you feel the need for video, and AF. But for those needs I prefer Sony cameras for size and performance. Plus you can still share M lenses on both bodies when you want to.

Within the Leica world, I shoot an M11 + Q3 for the same reasons. Q3 is a great 28/35 option, and prevents me from having to buy a 35 Summilux, plus I get AF. I've got a 21 SEM and 50 Cron for the M11 that pairs nicely.

The only thing I think I would find a bit frustrating is the resolution difference the M10 and the Q3.. When I shot an M10 + Q2, it did start to annoy me looking at the M10 files and not being able to crop as much and zoom into the finer details as opposed to the Q2. The Q3 would only exacerbate this. If that's not a concern for you, then I think a Q3 + M body is a very solid option.

I'd be using the M11m and a Q3 so no resolution issues, even when shooting M10 / M10m i dont really mind the difference in resolution between the two. glad to hear that someone else is doing something very similar to what i'm thinking tho, does give me some reassurance that its not too crazy of an idea haha thanks!

I own the M11/M11m, an M-A and a Q3

I am set for the next 5 years-

Why I have really enjoyed the Q3 is the fact I can hand it to anyone with the right settings, and they can snap a quick photo without having any idea what they are doing- Its also a great tool for getting serious and wanting to go out shooting for a day by yourself-

Case in point- We took the Q3 with us when we snagged our Christmas Tree- I handed the Q3 to a farm hand and asked him to snap a quick photo- I told him just point and hit the bit red button- Eye AF nailed it and its a great photo of all of us that we don't always get-

So are you crazy for wanting to own both- 100% not- The new charging ports, the better eye AF, the easy Leica buttons and settings- Its a real pleasure to use and huge step up from the Q2- Buy it if your budget allows, its a great addition to your kit.

exactly! that photo you posted is one of the reasons why I think it would be great to have an easier to use camera! i dont think it would make sense for me to keep both the M10 and the Q3, dont really see a need to have two different color cameras, but i think im leaning more towards wanting to try out the Q3 than to keep the M10.
did just get on the waitlist for it so at some point i'll get the call, i figured i could just get it and try it out then decide if i want to sell the M10 or the Q3…

The concept of a mixed bag M + Q has an allure to it.

I've got a Q2, M246 (mono) and M10R presently in my arsenal. The Q2 was my first entry, and it is my least used. So, I'm looking to maybe retool things a bit, also.

I think it comes down to not so much about the gear, itself. Rather, how does your mind work to categorize things. Me, in my pre-Leica days, I typically had "one for go, one for slow". I still kinda think that way, but with the advent of the monochrome, now it has things like "one for color, one for mono". And with the Q2 in the picture it is "one for MF, and one for AF" or "one for wide (or macro)" and "one for telephoto".

My point is that ANY of the cameras can serve a purpose well, but I'd pretend that you have a clean slate ... and ask yourself what is that you would want TWO bodies for? How much overlap vs. gap / difference do you want in those two bodies? Do you want them to complement each other, or do you want to maximize their differences?

That said, I'd ask the question of what glass do you shoot mostly on your M10M or your M10? If you got rid of your M10 and ONLY had your M10M ... what would you feel it lacks? Color is obvious, AF is possible, lens choices wouldn't be a big issue.

With the Q/2/3 ... it provides color and AF, but lens options are now down to the 28mm. Which, imo, the Q2 lens crops down EXTREMELY WELL to 35mm equivalent, REALLY GOOD to the 50mm equiv, and (that's about where I draw my line), adequate to the 75mm equiv.

So (imo) if your needs are largely in the 28-50 range for color / AF, the Q2 / Q3 are pretty safe. I'd imagine the Q3 extends that 75mm crop from adequate to pretty good, too (just a guess).

So, if you are good with giving up the color of the M10 for the color in the Q as mostly an even swap, then the trade-off is the obvious ILC vs. fixed lens. Handling is a bit diff with the Q, as it is EVF vs. RF, but it still is a very nice camera.

Battery life is a bit different in the Q, too. But, with the Q3 ... charging will likely be a nice plus.

Could I roll with the M246 and Q2 combo. I could ... but, I'd miss the ILC of the M10R. Specifically, when I shoot landscape, where I often use a longer lens for compression, or just those things I can't get close enough to (my 75/2.4 or 135/3.4) Cropping for FOV would be an option, but then I'm giving up pixels (in landscape) to limit print size.

I think the M10M + Q3 is a good combo ... BUT, you have to understand what it restricts you from. Essentially, that would be tele / color. If you don't have a need for tele / color combination, then you're golden.

this is a great write up, you totally hit the nail on the head! i think what i'd be giving up has been my main concern. i'd get AF which is nice for ease of use, and color for wider angle shots. on my M i shoot like 99% of the time with the 35mm, and my secondary lens is the 75mm. so if i were to crop the Q3 to 75 i think it'd be pushing maybe too far, but i dont think i use that lens enough for it to become much of a problem for me…honestly i think anything that i'd like to shoot with the 75 in color is gonna be fine to just shoot wider, mostly it is car photos haha

Cropping deep to 75 is part of the Leica consideration for the Q's capabilities. It's not the first time I've cropped into 300% level, and it is definitely adequate for web posting, social, small printing, etc. You just have to be realistic with your expectations. I have also tested the uprezz capability of today's software, and it can help there, too. Should be a sample file to download somewhere that you can play with and get a feel for what cropping quality is like on the 60MP sensor with the Q's Summilux in front of it.

And, if you're talking about shooting car photos ... particularly for detail, the Q has the Macro mode, wich essentially acts as a built in extension tube. So, if you're using 75mm for close in detail work (vs. distance work of landscape, etc.), the Q will handle that level of "crop" via its Macro capability quite well ... better than the 75 on an M, in fact for certain work.

While (psuedo) macro / close focusing work isn't a primary focus of the M's ... the Q handles those tasks very well. If my feet can reach my subject, the Q macro mode can get me in tight, just has a limited focus distance in that mode. It is implemented rather well, you just don't hear much press about it. If my feet can't reach my subject, the 75 or 135 is in my bag.

As an alternate ... here's one shot with the 75 (on mono, as it turns out), that the Q (with crop), just wouldn't be where I'd find the cropping power of distant objects the strong suit of cropping the Q to a 75. It can do it, but you're tossing a lot of pixels, at that point. The Q3 has more pixels to toss than my Q2, but as long as one understands the difference in how your tools play to their strengths / weaknesses ... you're golden.

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/920070/2075#16109809

Could it be that the M10M / Q3 get you into a situation where you wanted both long and color ... yeah, maybe. But, if that's only a small % chance for you (get a low $$$ M240 as your "safety net"), the M10M / Q3 combo would pair their strengths / diff's for a nice 1-2 punch combo ... kinda like an uppercut and a right-hook for knockout stuff. Imo, cropping the Q3 down to 75 for distant subjects, would be like a short jab for stuff that isn't knockout material. Still packs a nice punch, even if not jaw dropping like its powerhouse brothers.

yea that's true, i keep forgetting about the macro on the Q, closer focusing will definitely help for certain detail shots! that also was what got me to swap my 35 lux for the new version, 40cm isn't quite macro but it definitely makes a big difference.
thanks for all the tips and examples! definitely helped make me feel better about wanting to get the Q3
