Sigma FP as an Alt host

I searched, and could not find any specific FP threads. I have been eyeing this camera since 2019, and with the weak Yen, just picked one up over here (I live in Japan) as they have dipped below $1000 used, and can actually be bought new for about $1200 from Kitamura camera (not sure about other chains) at the moment.

Initial thoughts:
-This is an ODD camera, but I like it.
-This is a video/cinema camera first, photo second
-I'm digging the sensor, happy to be back on a full-frame
-I will need the EVF for sure.

I've put together a small Canon FD kit. All FDN; 28/2, 50/1.4, 100/2. I don't like the adapter I have at the moment, need to grab another. Also have the tiny TTartisan 50/2 coming.

I mostly shoot daily life, travel, outdoors and city stuff. I think this camera will work great for me. Time will tell.
I *nearly* bought a refurb Canon R8 at the great black friday price, but went with this for the weird factor, plus Canon RF lens options still piss me off.

Anybody else on here using one of these?

A few of us have/had it. Lovely camera with nice colors, but A7C killed it esp with A7C ii/R release... EVF makes it easier to use, but it makes it awkward and big. It has a thinner 1.3mm sensor stack which makes it a good choice for m lenses. Archived FP posts:

I've been contemplating getting it for video; I have a few Blackmagic cinema cameras that I use for that but need something with better low-light performance and hate using Sony for video. This is the only small affordable full-frame camera with cinema controls (shutter angle instead of shutter speed, accurate frame rates, etc.), and the video quality even when shot raw in 1080p is excellent.

The only reason I didn't buy it when getting my first fullframe camera was the lack of mechanical shutter, which increases the risk of rolling shutter artifacts.

I still have my original fp but it's not been in active use this year and I sold my L-mount lenses. I still have some adapters for it so I could use my rangefinder lenses and some others if/when I get inspired to use it again. I only take photos (no video) and I prefer to use an EVF. One of the downsides is the add-on EVF which is a bit too big and clunky. Also there's some more color shading and vignetting with adapted rangefinder lenses on the fp than e.g. with Sony A7C / A7CII, however it's possible to compensate by making and using in-camera color shading profiles which is a really nice feature unique to fp. Originally I really liked Sigma's in-built color-profiles but later I got Fujifilm X-S10 as a secondary camera (for ability to use CV X-mount lenses) and I think Fujifilm's film simulations are still nicer for SOOC JPEG use.

It would be nice if Sigma would make a new more photo-centric camera with in-built small & nice EVF that would play even nicer with rangefinder lenses (i.e. less color shading + vignetting).

I'm impressed with the images so far, and as goofy as the handling is, I have such a strong dislike for Sony controls, UI and JPEGs, I didn't see that as an option. I would've gotten a Canon RP or R8 before getting a Sony.

Still have my trusty fp. Can get it relatively cheap these days. Colours are excellent and the depth of this camera goes beyond photographers to realm of cinema. Downsides is the rolling shutter sync speed and banding at certain frequencies.ie 60 or 50. Though not everyone shoots squirrels on crack. For general street photography it works well

It's still the smallest full frame camera btw!

I owned one and loved the images but found the lack of viewfinder and dim screen (as I recall) too much to keep it. The images however were lovely.

I am really digging it. I am keeping an eye out for a cheap 35/2 DG DN to be my native/AF lens.
Will be starting a vacation this week (back to Texas for a few weeks, then a detour through Taiwan on the way back to Japan) and excited to travel with a tiny FF camera.

I didn’t know about the 1.3mm stack thickness. Was this measured somewhere?

Kolari measured it and original info is here: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1633515/6&year=2020#15332394

As Juha posted, the sensor topping thickiness of 1.3mm was posted here previously.

Also tweaks such as tilted lcd should have helped using the FP without the evf. At least in the second version Sigma should have included:

Got it! Thanks for sharing. The source, Kolari, initially mentioned that the Nikon Z7 had a 1.1mm stack, but that information turned out to be incorrect. If the FP really has 1.3 I would like to give it a try on day.

That is in line with what Kolari reported for S1R: "These layers of sensor cover glass have a combined thickness of roughly 1.45 millimeters." But then the Nikon calculation was wrong on that.

https://kolarivision.com/the-panasonic-s1r-disassembly-and-teardown/

Juha has posted FP photos with rf lenses. I used mostly rf lenses on FP, but I don't have the lens information on them except a few that I posted at that time. Contax g 45 converted m mount was good. Leica 50mm 2.4 was OK for landscapes, similar to Sony 40/50mm 2.5 corners. I tried the Summicron 28mm f2 II and the corners was passable for closer landscapes.

Avenon 28mm f3.5 ltm was good:

I've really enjoyed my FP, but I've mostly used it for video work. Dark Power Labs has made some great accessories for making it super practical for shooting CinemaDNG with it. I only have two L lenses though. The Sigma 35mm f/1.2 and the 65mm f/2. Both are really superb.

I'll be messing with a DPL cage and SSD rack soon.
