p.1 #12 · p.1 #12 · Does this mean that Leicas really are jewelry rather than cameras? | |
It's actually a pretty nice watch. I like a good hand wound German watch. Most watches are made using computer numerical control machines and laser cutters for nearly every part these days, with a limited amount of true hand finishing, unlike the days gone by. So it's no surprise the smart folks at Leica figured out how to make one, too. Leica has a long history of limited editions, and also higher prices compared to other brands. This business model enables them to use these profits to make their superior products, which albeit expensive, have few peers. In their user base there are certain people who buy these items because of the perceived "Luxury" branding. They also have optics that are rarely matched for for size and weight in the m line, for example. It took Cosina 8 years to compete with the 50mm f2 apo-Summicron-m apsh using their Otus knowhow, and the Leica version still edges the Apo-Lanthar 50 out in ultimate performance, albeit for 9 times the price. The M11 has the best iteration of the 61mp bsi cmos sensor for color science and dynamic range. These are but 2 examples of the many superior offerings of Leica. Do they cost more? Yes. Can you get a better alternative for any cost? For some offerings, no. Are people still going to cast aspersions out of envy, you bet.
