Just found out the hard way that Samyang FE/E lens can have serious
continuous AF problems with the latest Sony bodies ie:

α7CII
•α7CR
•α6700
•FX6

https://www.samyanglens.com/en/about/notice-view.php?seq=1586&search_params_str=page%3D1%26perPage%3D20%26search%3D%26searchText%3D%26type%3D

Bought the a6700 to use with the Samyang 24mm 1.8 as a street kit only to find it has the apparently common problem of continuously pulsing in continuous AF mode. Basically it never finds focus with a moving subject.
Even using non-continuous AF, focus always takes about three seconds to lock on.

Updated to their beta fix firmware and the problem is exactly the same.
Looking at other forums the beta firmware seems to work for some but obviously not all.

My 24/1.8 worked fine with my A7Riv. I had to install the Beta firmware. to use with my A6700. It seems to work fine now but I haven't done extensive testing. I did have to go through the regular update process to get it to version 3 as the lens was at Version 1 iirc when I began the update process. before then doing the beta update.

I went from v1 directly to rc3.
Maybe that was a mistake?

Oppps... I had the wrong firmware downloaded.
Thought the v3 I had loaded was the beta.
Turns out the beta downloads as v4.
Seems to be working as it should.

Does anyone have any issues using the 35-150 with these newer cameras.
I'm about to buy the 35-150, but I won't if there are problems.

I'll be using it on the a7CR.

Thanks.

I like Samyangs Tiny f1.8 series of lenses and I have them all actually plus the pancake 35/2.8. These have served me well on my A7C and as I see it, there are very few alternatives if one as I do value bright apertures and light weight as one of the highest parameters besides optical performance and autofocus performance. The Samyangs have all that. They feel cheap but I can live with that. Also I have had to return a few of them after delivery testing for exchange to another copy since Samyangs quality control seems to be so so.

Now I got the A7CII and had to update them all to the beta firmware. They seem to work fine but it is too early to say anything about the focus precision in real life. It used to be really good and I hope it is so still, but as I wrote, still needs to be tested in real life.

As to the 35-150 there is an alternative from Tamron and I would look close on both to see which one I'd go with.

I've kind of overloaded my brain between the two watching reviews.
What I came away with is, if you get a good copy of the Samyang, it's about 95% of what the Tamron is, at ⅔'s the price.
I have a Samyang station that came with the 14mm f2.8 when I bought it.

I guess I'll get the Samyang and try it out.

Looks like I am going to have to buy a lens station--I am getting some occasional pulsing with my new Samynag 45/1.8 on the A7Cr, and I like the lens a lot. I haven't been able to isolate the circumstances when the pulsing occurs, but it is only occasional. I assume the Rokinon Station is the same as the Samyang Station? B&H is selling it for $10 less.

I've now tried my Samyang 14mm f2.8, and my now 15 minute old 35-150.
Both lenses focus fine on my a7CR. No issues that I can see with the limited amount of time that I tried them.

Yes, I had one of each for a while until I sold one of them.

I just received a new Samyang 85 F1.4 MKII directly from Samyang and the autofocus performance on my A7CR is quite poor. When trying to acquire single focus it always moves in then back out until it acquires focus lock. This occurs even when re-aquiring focus at the same distance and results in a very slow single focus acquisition. When I go to continuous focus it just hunts in and out for a while and eventually seams to lock briefly then goes back to hunting. None of the Sony lenses I have tried behave like this. Maybe it needs a firmware update but I would be very aggravated to have to purchase the lens station just to get a new lens to work. Anybody else try the Samyang 85 F1.4 with the A7CR?

That is my experience with fast, long lenses on Sony mirrorless cameras. Sony calls it Fast Hybrid AF. The Sony FE 85mm F1.8 acts the same way. The camera also only looks at horizontal contrast, so it helps a lot to aim at some strong horizontal contrast. You may get better results stopping down a bit, especially if you have Shot Results Preview enabled. Auto ISO also tends to help--the AF pixels seem to benefit from the second gain.

You may have the "latest" official firmware. While not from Samyang, my "new" 24/1.8 wasn't current. Perhaps 2 versions back. Worked fine on A7Riv. I had to update the f/w then a second time with the beta to use with the A6700.

I just received an email back from Samyang and you are correct, the lens was shipped with the latest release and not beta. The beta description says it fixes continuous AF issues with the A7CR which is clearly broken. It does not say anything about single focus hunting but maybe my issues here are related to Sony hybrid AF anomalies pointed out by QuietOC, we'll see. A tad frustrating that I now have to purchase the lens station to get a new lens working but I guess that's the price you pay for going 3rd party.

Samyang today stated in an email that all beta releases now are released as production versions. Those who have the beta don't need to update again, which I read as they just released the beta versions as production releases without any further changes.

Now, if they also could release the new V-AF 100/2 in the Tiny series housing that would be good.
(the 20/1.8 is delayed from Q4 this year to March next year).
