Updating Tamron Firmware Tips?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Updating Tamron Firmware Tips?

I went to Tamron's website and read the instructions for updating the firmware for my lens. According to Tamron, I'm supposed to download the update onto my computer, then upload it to my lens via my camera.

I'm assuming this means the firmware update will be copied onto an SD card.

I have learned over time (the hard way) that missing a tiny procedural step will bring nothing but chaos. In other words, for those of you who have done this before, what do I need to do to get this done right and brick my lens or camera?

I just got the lens last week (Tamron 28-200mm). It has no port on tge lens, so it has to get done through my camera. The current firmware version on the lens is 3, the latest version is 4.

If I screw this firmware update up, will it void my warranty?

Be sure to go to the Tamron website and download the Tamron driver before opening the firmware update software (I needed to do this with OSX, but am not certain about Windows).

What can be confusing is that there are two separate Tamron programs for updating the lenses. The software I used on my 35-150mm f2-f2.8, which is a direct USB-3 connection, without the camera, did not work with the 28-200mm when the lens was mounted on the camera, even though there is a menu selection for this mode(!).

I looked further down the Tamron web page and found the software that worked with the 28-200mm. This is really confusing and Tamron offers little information to avoid this confusion and frustration. I have read numerous posts on various forums from others that experienced the same frustration.

As long as you do not interrupt the updating process before complete, I doubt that you will have any "bricking" problems. In any case, I do not expect that it will void your warranty.

As a note, I am really impressed with the V4 update. I just shot my cat playing using my A1 with Eye Focus, mostly at 200mm. The tracking was perfect and nearly every shot in dozens of frames was in perfect focus and quite sharp. I almost had to pinch myself when reviewing the shots. A lens this small, light and cheap just shouldn't perform this well!

Thanks everyone! I was able to successfully do the update. The lens version reads 4 in my menu now, and I didn't brick the lens, fry my camera or cause my computer to implode!

The AF tracking is working a bit better. I'll test it tomorrow in better lighting conditions.

Thanks!

Update:

Turns out I had tracking sensitivity set to 3 or 4 on my A7c. I changed it to "Locked On", and it is mind blowing!! It really locks focus on whatever I point the AF selection square to. There is a slight momentary blink or gap where the AF selection square disappears as it tries to track the subject while the camera is moving. Other than that minor glitch, it's working very well!
