p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Why 2 systems or even more given todays tech

Now ive been around the block a few moons or two and in my past I had up to 3 systems at one time and at some point in my life I said why do I have these systems when one would work well for most everything. Now admittedly that was in the past and things are not near as good system wide as they are today. The last maybe ten years I have been all Sony and Sony only. Now the A7r was a big challenge as the only body but today we have some real winners, so lets stay more present in this question and lets say the last 5 years. So I have to wonder as a working Pro that shoots many different styles of photography for clients. So given that had some of the best Sonys ever made the A9,A9II just about all A7 models than A1, A7rv and even the new 6700 what possibly where I can be lacking on camera abilities. I shot just abut every camera under the sun the last 50 years but today the question is what's making you still picking 2 or 3 system even to keep in your kit.

I mean I love cameras and the gear factor too but fundamentally why you buying today like this. I read this forum pretty much everyday and I still see the Nikon,Sony , Canon users talking about this and that but why do you today given the great tech owning more than one.

Not meant to be an all out brawl on this but im curious. Is it a missing feature set or missing lens or are you just a pig and want to own all of it etc etc.

Look forward to comments and the Trolls please sit this one out. You can't bullshit me.

I can certainly appreciate the Nikon and Fuji systems and aesthetics, but I'm a one system guy
I do try to hold other systems in my hands when I can, and as an A7RIV user I am currently most envious of the Z8 from everything I've touched.

Grass is always greener on the other side. I like Nikon Zf retro design and Nikon Z8 is a lot more affordable than A1. It is a hobby so to keep things fresh I might purchase a different camera/brand. I also started my digital photography journey on Nikon, so I have a soft spot for Nikon cameras. I also like Fuji cameras a lot.

As a non-professional, camera tech is ages ahead of my needs, but what else am I going to do with all my disposable income?

As many of you know, I have bounced around almost all of the different systems since I retired a few years ago (except Canon, which has zero interest to me since they switched over to mirrorless, despite my being a CPS member for over 20 years prior to that).

At the risk of stating the obvious, every system has its strengths, but the more varied your use of the gear, the more you run up against potential shortcomings in each system, and you have to make trade-offs. Having more than one system lets you cherry-pick the best lenses or the best features from each system, so long as your bank account allows. I could go into specifics, but that post would be too long for most people to read (and would get certain trolls too worked up) so I'll just stop here.

that was good and great response . We never really asked the question in the past but I think it is relevant .

My biggest issue and this is me is I shoot with all the lighting that many may not as problems or special feature sets. I shoot a ton of LED, Flouresent, Strobes and such so maybe way more than others run into

The Sony A1 changed my desire to own more than one Sony Full Frame camera. I couldn't even dream up a reason to keep the really nice A7rV alongside the A1. Although I do like the A7rV's rear screen design very much.

Leica ( both Leica rangefinder and mirrorless) pretty much doused my GAS for any other camera brand since my first Leica rangefinder experience in 2018.

1. Sony A1 is my workhorse
2. Leica is my love interest

I have shot with Minolta, Olympus, Fuji, Nikon (mostly) and the last few years Sony. As an amateur, most cameras exceeded my capabilities. In the mirrorless era, I started with the Nikon Z6 and the switched over to Sony. I had several models until I acquired the A1 which is an ideal camera for me since I love to shoot wildlife and it can do that and everything else very well.
After trying many brands, I see no need to have multiple systems and sine I do not shoot professionally any more, I have no need for more than one body. I did round out my present system with better lenses, but to be honest not using most of them.

My most used lenses are the Sony 200-600 and Tamron 28-200. Sine it is Thanksgiving today and family coming over, maybe I’ll mount the Sony 24-70 GMii today 😁. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Leica has a special place in my heart as well. I had the full DMR and M8 setup and a low bank account to go with it.

I have multiple systems, but don’t plan to keep them all. Without going into detail, I often find myself going out with a FF camera with one or two small primes combined with a MFT camera with a long zoom. That given me enormous range without overburdening me.

I am currently shooting both Sony and Nikon. With the release of the Z8, it checked all my boxes for resolution, speed and video capability, that should last me the rest of my life. But, the same can also be said for my A7sIII and FX30. However, should a client come along who wants RAW video, and 8K, I can deliver it.

I’m in my 46th year of photography (shocks me to write that) and in that time I have shot Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Olympus, Pentax, Fuji, Sony, and some others. The earlier years as a photojournalist it was single system Canon, then when I struck out on my own to license stock images I needed multiple brands and formats. But in the digital age I have usually preferred a single system so that the ergonomics and controls become as familiar as possible to help the flow of making images in the field.

During the past two decades I have enjoyed switching brands and formats a few times in order to shake things up. This year I am still in the deep love phase with my A7RV system and to me it’s the finest landscape setup I have ever owned, I prefer it over my past D850, GFX100S, Pentax 645Z. I have no desire to make things more confusing for my 58-year-old brain by adding in a different brand.

For me, Sony has bodies/lenses for just about any use case, at least for me, so I have no need for 2 systems.

However- if I were say a consistent field sports shooter, I'd be tempted to pick up a Canon body, just so I could grab a few old "big whites" to use on the cheap compared to what you're going to pay for Sony 400 2.8's etc.

Given today's tech the 2 system set up I use 95% of the time is iPhone 15 Pro Max + Pixel 8 Pro.

This is why I've considered getting a Canon body, but a Canon R5 + EF500F4 gets me pretty close to the used cost of buying one of Sony's big whites.

I have been shooting Sony exclusively in the last 8-9 years or so. Prior to Sony releasing their own long lenses, I used 2 Canon super tele lenses to be able to do bird photography. I still have a few Leica-M lenses that I haven’t sold yet but all Canon lenses are gone. For a short period, I had a Fuji GFX 100s and a few lenses. But it was too cumbersome to use 2 systems and sold the body and 2 lenses. Again, a few GFX lenses will have to be sold but I am just too lazy to do it now…

At this point, I am very content with my Sony gear. I do have the A1 and A7r V that cover my camera needs. I can do everything, well, pretty much everything with my existing lenses. Literally, there is nothing on the other side, whether it is from C or N or L or F that attracts me. The A7c R because of the size and yet resolution intrigues me. I will add that before too long.

Agree there is no need to own multiple systems to do the job, in general. Especially there is no need to own two SIMILAR systems just because of different brand. But one may prefer a larger set for landscape where it's beneficial to have more resolution, for example, and a smaller setup for street when resolution is not important but portability is important. If you can have both setups within one system it is still better.

I find the main downside of owning multiple systems is the time wasted on the internet and deciding which system to take before a trip. It take away tons of time researching a lens on the internet and read/watch all the reviews and discussions. Imagine multiple that by 3.

I am like many people here, have been shooting for many years, for me since 1970, and have gone through virtually all the main brands in the past. I do this as a hobby, although I did some professional work in the film days. Although I have shot many different brands I have preferred sticking with one at a time. Get to know the camera where the buttons, etc. are. so that settings are in muscle memory. I have been a Sony shooter for the past 12 years, with a two-year hiatus recently when I went to Fuji to lighten my load as I aged. The A7cr brought be back to Sony, and I have now sold all my Fuji equipment, except for one lens. I might add I progressed through Sony, Nex 5, Nex 7 (my all-time favorite), A6000, A7, A7rII, A7rIII, A7rIV -- then to Fuji -- now A7cr.

Why would I sell perfectly good photo gear, that's taken tons of excellent photos?

Had 3-4+ systems around on film, although I mostly used 1, mostly had one on digital, but m4/3 + alts was a nice change of pace
