Canon G5 X Mark II - No replacement coming?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon G5 X Mark II - No replacement coming?

I've been looking for one of these cameras for a while for an upcoming trip where I won't be bringing my regular gear. When I first narrowed in on the specs and decided this was the best fit for my travel needs, Canon's site listed it as backordered as did every other retailer. Searching out rumors didn't help fill in the knowledge gap relative to whether it was potentially going to be replaced given its age, except commentary about cameras suffering significantly from supply chain shortages. Now, slowly, the retailers and Canon's site have all switched to discontinued.

I know there are no crystal balls, but does it seem fair to assume there is no Mark III coming for this model?

The G7 X III doesn't suit me as well as the G5 X II, and the other options in the category don't call to me.

Have we all had to give up on Canon releasing new models of compact cameras for higher end users who want a compact option? Looking at Canon's site, the only compact cameras that remain and currently aren't backordered (and maybe cancelled) are the V10 (geared toward video) and the G7 X Mark III. Disappointing, to say the least...

Maybe most people don't care because Canon has so many other great options.

Just get a R50 and compact lens of your choice. It's pocket sized if you wear big dungarees.

Guess the market is limited. And people who want/need compact travel cameras for non-photography focused trips have found other options more suitable than the Canon offerings... Wouldn't be the first (or last) time my preferences don't match the majority.

Yeah, smartphones are "compact travel cameras for non-photography focused trips" for 99.9% of people. I'm an outlier as I bought the R7 and 18-150 for that purpose. It's tiny and light and much better quality than the more compact options I've tried. Didn't get along with the various Pen, Canon M-series and Canon S-series I owned in the past. Too small to comfortably use and not great IQ and video.

Agreed - for the masses. But I was hoping within this forum I'd be tapping into other photographers who usually have different needs and don't always feel satisfied with smartphone photos. Although this trip won't focus on photography and I can't dedicate the volume/weight to bring what I normally would, I'm still a photog at heart and want to have something better than a phone for when I have moments to explore with a camera.

I gave very serious consideration to the G5X MkII. I already had a G7X MkII and love the color and IQ, but I wanted a longer zoom and I liked the idea of the evf on the G5X2. After playing with a friend's G5X2 for about a month, I decided instead to get a 'pre-owned' Sony RX100 MkVII for about $400 less than msrp. Right off, there are two improvements that I very much like, those being the 24-200mm zoom, and the amazing AF, significantly better than the G5X2 (and G7X2) and with reliable eye focus for people and animals. It's outstanding! The lens is slower than the Canon's, f/2.8 vs f/1.8, but the focal range allows me a lot more versatility. It's very small but you can buy a Sony grip that looks just like the grip on the G5X2, and this makes it much more enjoyable to handle. It really is a brilliant camera. If you're at all interested in it, check out the reviews on YouTube and on other photo sites.

Thanks for the suggestion - I just may need to do that. I know there are some sweet spots in the Sony lineup that people tend to be rabid about (but I can never remember which Mark ___ and why). I'll check into this one.

Indeed, no need to hope. You tapped into the collective brain of FM and got suggestions and personal solutions. No too many cellphone shooters here. Mine is only in tow for iPod duty while waiting for good light. I'm happy with my midget R7 for travel but if the R10 or R50 had been available at the time I might have gone even smaller. The R50 and pancake could squeeze in a vest pocket or fanny pack.

I sold my G5 X Mark II to buy a G5X1. I like it better and it has a hot shoe
