p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sunrise at Skagit Valley

The Skagit valley is a gem in Northwest Washington featuring amazing flowers in the spring and wildlife in the winter. Featured are eagles, swans, hawks, owls, snow geese, ducks and various other wildlife. I spent sunrise there after a 90 mile drive from Tacoma and it was well worth the time. Bruce

Mount Baker

Thousands of snow geese roost in the Puget Sound overnight and all take off at the same time. The sound is amazing

Bruce, you have captured the essence of the Skagt Valley, superb images. I can envision exactly where you were standing on many of these shots.

What a sight! (and sound from what you've said) You could make a Hitchcock movie out there.
Nice environmental set,
Eric

Nice set of my back-yard birding local. The sandpipers on the logs is my favorite.

Great images, Bruce. You're lucky you weren't directly under them at take off. That's a loud, smelly and slimy green all over everything experience. I got caught one morning several years ago when a flock of snow geese decided to move from one side of the road to the other. I was right at the edge of the flock as they took off. I had to hunch over my camera to protect it from the bombardment of take off poop. Both myself and my truck were green and slimy after that. Fortunately I was only a couple miles from the farm so was able to wash the truck and shower before it all dried. I've learned my lesson and stay further away from large flocks.
The Skagit valley is a phenomenal area to shoot both in the spring and winter. The variety of birds during the winter migration as well as having Mt. Baker on one side and the Olympics showing on the other makes some great landscape opportunities as well as you've demonstrated here.
My winter shooting schedule in the valley starts this week and I'm looking forward to a productive winter.

Thanks Chris, You are exactly correct, I have also been caught in the smelly green zone of a mass take off. I am looking forward to many trips there this winter. Bruce

Pretty much a sure thing to see snow geese, GBH, Swans, eagles and good chance to see short eared owls almost any day. I have spent many days in Alaska photographing eagles and brown bears. I also spent 32 years doing coaches clinics, and soccer camps in Wasilla, Palmer, Anchorage. Fairbanks and Ketchikan. Let me know if you ever make down this way and would be happy to show you around.
