The Samsung T7 and SanDisk 4TB SSDs are now at $199 on Amazon and BH. I wonder if there'll be a further drop.

Aren't the SanDisk 4TB SSDs among the ones with a known problem ?

Amazon makes it clear that they have updated the firmware. See -

Added: Your link says it is a hardware issue not a firmware problem.

Yes - apparently the problem is defective hardware, not something which can be fixed via firmware.

Yes. I'd avoid the Sandisk just because of their bad track record. The T7 drives on the otherhand have nothing but shining reviews.

My Samsung T7 4TB has been great the past 3 months I've had it, bought from B&H for $220 so $200 seams reasonable but maybe additional BF sales on the horizon? It is very fast, just over 1050 MBps connected to the USB C port on my 2019 Razor Blade laptop, which is over twice as fast as my internal backup SSD (not NVMe), Samsung 970 Evo I think, and it's been going strong for quite a few years now. When it comes to SSD's I trust Samsung.

It sounds like there's an issue with the SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD's, but this doesn't apply to the regular extreme SSD's as far as I know. The first link is the the Pro with the issues, the second link is to the regular Extreme SSD's that I have not had any issues with. I would consider myself a heavy user of these and I'm now own 12 of the SanDisk Extreme SSD's because I like the form factor, the non slip finish, and the loophole for tying them all together when traveling. If anyone should have a problem with them it would be me as I'm always traveling and filling/dumping them. You are fine to buy the regular SSD's in the second link, but I would stay clear of the Pro version in the first link:

Hitherto I, too, have been a SanDisk non-Pro user for years and have had no issues. Good to know of the caveat above.

T9 for $50 more will get you 2X speeds of the T7.

On a Mac the T9 wil have the same speed as the T7. The Mac has only a USB 3.1 interface (10Gbs).

Still Sandisk. I don’t take the risk at the moment as it’s unclear to me which SSD’s are affected or not.
I build my own; ACASIS Thunderbolt/ USB4 housing (about $90) and Samsung 990 Pro 4Tb (about $250).

Which Mac? The new MacBook Pros have reached speeds of 3000 read/write with the right enclosure/chipset (ie ZikeDrive, etc)

I have a 14” MBP M1 Max
AFAIK all Mac’s (apple silicon) have besides TB3/4 and USB4 only USB 3.1 gen 2 interface which is max 10 Gbs.
The T9 has an USB 3.1 gen 2x2 interface which the Mac’s doesn’t support.

How are the portables compared to powered? I've always used a powered ext drive for my desktop. Non powered for travel. They work fine but I have read powered are faster. I suppose a portable SSD will be faster than a powered HD. Hard to find powered SSD with high storage like 6TB. Not inexpensive either.

Got it but a TB4 connection via the USB-C port should be full speed/40 Gbs

All depends on the chip being used from my understanding. I just did a bunch of research and there is one chip that offers full 40 Gbps speed via TB4 regardless of being powered or not.

https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/2022/11/29/list-of-ssd-enclosure-chipsets-2022/

I chose the ZikeDrive enclosure as currently at good price and, if keep window open for a while and use burner email, can get extra 15% off ;-)

That chip can do up to 16TB SSD so only question is whether you jump on a fast 4TB model that can be had for around $200 (Just snagged the Samsung 990 Pro for $180 via Slickdeals site info) or spend more on an 8TB model

FWIW. This kit ZikeDrive + Samsung 4TB has worked out very well for me so far.
