My recent acquisition of the A7CR, taken together with a general interest in venturing out with just one (light weight) lens, has inspired me to look at what other lenses I might appreciate for travel. In particular Sony's recent 24G lens.

I currently have the Batis 25, the 55/1.8 and the PZ 16-35. Also the 20-70 and the 12-24/4, but these don't fit my criteria for light weight to the same degree (although the 20-70 is otherwise kind of great as a one-and-done option, but not really light weight).

Anyone have any real-world experience with the Batis 25 and the newer 24G? I'm particularly interested in sharpness in general, but also reasonably good into the edges and corners of the frame. I don't often shoot people, where softer corners and edges don't really come into play.

In Dustin Abbott's review of the 24G, I think he observed that the corners were soft compared to the 24GM. I don't care about the 24GM, it's too heavy for my criteria. (Otherwise no doubt stunning though. Chad Hites' thread on Disneyland illustrated that convincingly.)

If the 24G can rise to the level of the Batis 24, and do so across the frame, it's small size and light weight makes it of interest to me. This is about want, not need.

Thoughts?

I started with the 24G and it was fine -- quite sharp for my purposes, although I was not scrutinising corners. Then I moved to the Batis 25 which is also quite sharp but to my eye renders more favourably -- I like the look, the colours and the 'pop' for want of a better term. I found an excellent used copy for less than the price of the 24G and have been using the Batis ever since. It has numerous excellent reviews but you do have to go back in time to find them. Reviewers can provoke some colour fringing with certain subjects under the right conditions, but it is easily treated in LR and disappears on modest stopping down.

He already has the Batis 25, so I think he was looking at smaller options in comparison to the Batis (like the 24G and maybe things like the Sigma i24/3.5, etc.)

Same here, I chose Sigma 24 3.5 after reading Gordon's review as he compared against the Sony 24mm. Sigma has 1:2 macro also....

I have Batis as well but that is on the bigger side...

Thanks for the helpful responses. Even though the Sigma weighs more than the Sony, I feel that would be a reasonable choice, assuming it's IQ is a step up from the Sony in the ways I've mentioned. (I'll view Gordon's video, haven't gotten to it yet.)

The Sigma is still enough lighter than the Batis to be a real consideration, and also lighter than the PZ 16-35, which will likely be my most-used lens on the A7CR.

Has anyone gotten a decentered copy of the Sigma on first attempt?

The Batis is a little bulky, but very light in weight.

You already own the Batis 25? I would call it good, especially considering it's great IQ and focus accuracy (on my a7R2 and a7R4 bodies).

Hi Brian,

I have Zeiss Batis 25/2,Sony 24/1.4 GM and Sony G 24/2.8.Here are my thoughts:

GM is optically the best,followed closely by Batis.Sony 24G is last.This however doesn't mean 24G is crappy.Because of it's small size it is not easy to design it so as it is tack sharp wide open.Stopping it down 1 f stops makes corner softness hardly visible and at f8 the lens is sharp across the frame,has good microcontrast and colour rendition.Suitable for landscape,but no as good as the GM or Batis.Not ideal but good stopped down,tiny,featherlike weight and manual aperture.25 Batis'es only minor weaness is some CA,but in all relevant aspects (microcontrast,colour rendition and sharpness) the lens is very good/excellent an has desirable Zeiss look.GM 24 is optically excellent and slightly heavier than Batis,but it's IQ,while flawless in the real life photography,is a bit boring.

I use Sony 24/2.8 G when I want to have tiny AF wide angle with aperture ring
I use Zeiss Batis 25/2 when I want 24-25mm prime with Zeiss IQ and AF
I use Sony GM 24/1.4 when speed connected with excellent IQ and full manual control is required

I haven’t used either of those but wanted to add another recommendation for the Sigma 24/3.5. I have it and love it. Close focus, rendering, and sharpness are all great. Size and weight is practically the same as the Sigma 45 and together they make a great compact kit. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything over the f/2.8 lenses but I do occasionally think the f/1.4 of the 24GM would be fun.

The 24G is not "soft" in the corners. It is perhaps "softer" in the extreme corners but this is all relative if you wish to pixel peep ad nauseam and is in my opinion completely trivial. The overall image quality is excellent. I haven't tried the others, but in my opinion sharpness differences are probably not the reason to pick one over the other. Not sure why "Zeiss AF" is something special. But of course there is always someone to praise Zeiss over everything else.

I was never the biggest fan of the Batis 25 and liked the Sony GM 24 far better and the Loxia 25mm which is a manual lens but the Sony GM and Loxia 25 are the best in that focal length. I tried the 24g but was not fond of it so much. This may come down to a budget issue for some. I usually go for the juggler and get the best I can. Today if buying I would get the Sony GM 24 and not look back. BTW I have tested these lenses and im very good at testing

I had the 24GM, Batis 25 and Loxia 25 at various times over the years. The Loxia is the best landscape lens, optically speaking, possibly the best, full stop, across all brands at that focal length. GM has the best bokeh and rendering. Batis is great, but not quite 'best' in any one area.

I'm one of the few who like the Batis build; it's solid yet light, if a bit portly. I'd just keep the Batis and be done. You also have the PZ16-35...I don't really see the Sigma 24/3.5 giving you anything over that except lower distortion and better build.

Good summary, I agree with you on the take on the 24GM, Batis 25, Loxia 25. The Loxia 25 is just a stupendous landscape lens. The 24GM has great bokeh and rendering like you say, but stopped down for landscapes I'm not sure I find it all that remarkable. (I think it's let down in the corners by some astigmatism and CA.) I tend to like the Batis 25 for landscape apertures (talking f/8 and smaller.)

Agreed. The GM is a solid landscape lens, excellent even, especially for a 1.4. But the Loxia is superlative and the Batis is absolutely excellent. The Batis has a very flat field and is an easy lens to get excellent cross frame sharpness out of.

I sold the GM because I'm not good at using a 24mm at f/1.4, so it's 'magic' was wasted on me.

Tough to go wrong with any of those lenses, and when you throw in the PZ16-35 and/or Sigma 24/3.5...a pretty good 'dilemma' to find one's self in

With the A7CR in mind, I'd say that I'm good with the Batis. I quite like it's balance of IQ and reasonably light weight. My interest in the 24G is primarily because it would maximize the potential for a light carry around. On that basis it has its' own unique appeals, even if images from other lenses might be superior in one or other small ways. The 24GM holds little appeal to me at all, some of the reasons have been laid out in the above posts.

I'm aware that adding the 24G to my existing lenses would be an indulgence, not a requirement in any way.

We're heading out on a short trip to Florida in January, I'll probably take the Batis along with the PZ 16-35 and the 20-70.

Just for the record the Loxia 25mm is even better than the Loxia 21mm . Really not a better 24/25 than the Loxia but it lacks AF .

Bottom line almost everyone looks at the money. I don't I look at what it will do, for me money is secondary . Vast diffrence there

The last person I would buy a lens from is a juggler.

I don't have the Sony 24GM, but I have Loxia 25/2.4, Batis 25/2, and the older Zeiss ZE 25/2. Of these, Loxia is the best overall with MF; Batis has convenient AF with smooth color and bokeh; the ZE is MF with excellent, but heavier with adapter.
