4TB - $199

Picked one up for that price earlier this year. Seems about as low as they'll go, but with even cheaper and faster 4TB M2 NVMe drives now readily available it's arguably better to buy one of those and stick it in a 10 or 20Gbps enclosure with decent thermal dissipation.

I generally do, too (though with cheaper enclosures), but the one advantage of the likes of the Samsung T7 and Crucial X9 Pro (also a great deal on Amazon now at $183 for 4TB) is that they have a hardware encryption option built in, which AFAIK is something that can be tricky to enable with the modular approach. Knowing my portable drive is secure should I lose it is a nice feature.

so far i have not used any built in encryption. can't say i found a need for it. haven't lost one either. and i do a whole lot of moving around. the worst thing i've lost in 10 years has been my favorite flashlight. kind of used to holding on to the good stuff.

i have a 40Gbps port on my laptop and will have similar on the new build computer this winter.

Please don't spread FUD. Sandisk 4TB drives are the ones that have issues, not Samsung.

Yes, it was Sandisk drives that had the problem and WD says they're now fixed (and we have no reason to doubt them since I'm sure there are myriad lawsuits just ready to be filed in the US if this were not the case).

I grabbed a T7 4TB as my long term storage. Right now I use a Mac Studio 32g Pro 1T. I save all my files for the current shooting season to a 500GB T7 with a 2TB as backup. I am gonna be able to make the 2TB as my working file and the 4TB as my longer term. I only shoot 300-325Gb per year on avg.

the case i have coming today is with a machined aluminum and ventilated design so it acts as a heatsink. its fasted speed capability has a transfer speeds up to 3,800 Mbps. this is well within normal use. purchasing a SSD with a HS built on can problematic for depth and the ability to close the outer case.

The Sandisk drives (NOT LINKED) have hardware issues. I would never link them or suggest them.

The Samsung drives (LINKED IN OP) are totally fine and universally well received.
