p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A7CR Sensor Cleaner Technology Used

Starting ten years ago until two years ago, sensor spots were a regular irritation with all my Sony mirrorless cameras. I had a whole cleaning regimen that started with a rocket blower and escalated to delicate brushes, sensor pens, and finally, wet-cleaning, depending on the severity of the contamination.

That all changed when I acquired my A1’s. Between the closed shutter blades and the new ultrasonic cleaner, I now experience almost no contamination problems, whatsoever. So far, using the A7R5 for six months, the experience has been the same.

When setting up my recently acquired A7CR, I noticed that engaging the cleaning function seems to create the same ‘shaking’ haptics as my old A7RIV’s and previous cameras (I found that function to be nearly worthless).

The Sony website only states that the A7CR has a “Cleaning” function. My assumption is that it not ultrasonic, which would be disappointing. Does anyone specifically know which method is employed on this camera?

It should read, “The image sensor vibrates a little to shake-off A LITTLE BIT of the dust”.

Both the A7CII and A7CR has only the old handshaker function which some people might think feels good and can give the blood circulation back if one has held the body to hard and developed cramp in the hand.

If it is dust you want removed then it is the Gitzo Rocket Blower you want to use since there is no ultrasonic cleaner.

So no difference there vs all older bodys (except A7RV and A9III that do have ultrasonic cleaner).

But, Sony did put the shutter curtain closing function when off on the A7CII and A7CR so that might help a little.

Unfortunately the A7CR hasn't inherited the ultrasonic sensor cleaning from A7RV which is a deal breaker for me. I'd prefer the smaller body and especially the EVF in the top-left position over the full sized A7. Let's hope for the next time. None of other features (the useless audible sensor shake by IBIS motors nor the closed shutter) can help to prevent the dust on sensor, that's why the ultrasonic sensor cleaning has been invented.

As someone who shoots in sand dunes and beaches a lot dust was always an issue on my A7R II. I love the shutter closing function on my A7R V and the Ultrasonic cleaner seems to do a way better job at getting dust off than the old form. I'm still going to grab the A7C R because it at least has the shutter curtain close function.
