Bought my R6 new about 2 or 3 years ago and really haven't used it until recently. Been using my trusty old 7Dmk2 instead for many years. I am now finally trying to use the R6 and have two questions: 1st, how do I get the AF point to permanently stay where I place it? Right now, I have the point in the center of the screen and when I shoot, subsequent shots may move to another location. 2nd, what and how do I set the R6 to get high speed AI servo?

Thanks!

1) You probably have Touch & Drag AF enabled and you're touching the LCD. Otherwise, I don't know. Mine doesn't move unless I move it with the joystick.

2) There is no "high speed AI servo". Drive mode (single shot, low speed continuous, high speed continuous, delay timer) is one setting. AF operation (single shot, servo) is another setting. I believe you can access both settings through the default M-Fn button. They are also accessible through the Q menu.

The R6 is also very customizable. For example, I have the DOF preview button set to change Drive Mode and the far right button the back, next to the *, set to toggle between single shot AF and servo AF.

Mike, thanks for the quick response, I shoot a lot of NCAA College basketball games and I like the 7Dmk2 AI servo set to high so that for example, if a player is driving in for a layup, I can easily get 8-10 pics a second. This is what I want my 6D to do. I am sure the capability is there, but I don't know where.

I had a 7D2 also and don't recall it having any different focus speeds unless you're referring to AF cases. Servo AF works as quickly as possible to maintain focus on the subject, but the cases determine how it handles obstructions, how quickly it jumps subjects, etc. I use Case 2 for pretty much everything, which includes soccer.

Drive speed determines how many frames per second you get. H+ is 12 fps with mechanical or electronic first curtain shutter.

While we often think of servo+high fps as going together, they are two different parameters. You could have the camera focus once (single shot AF), then rattle off 12 fps (H+), resulting in a completely out of focus sequence as the player approaches you. Or you could have the camera continuously focus (servo AF), then take one frame per shutter press.

Then there are focus methods. That's where you get subject tracking or single AF points or clusters. Tracking allows you to acquire the subject, then maintain focus on it while it moves anywhere in frame. This is a game changer for mirrorless cameras over DSLR. But you may want to start with one of the traditional methods, like single point, where it focuses on whatever is under the AF square. It is then up to you to keep your square on the intended focus point, just like with the 7D.

AF method = 1-point AF
AF operation = SERVO
Drive mode = High speed continuous + (H+)

All three of these are available on the Q menu.

Will give you the most 7D like environment.

Am I the only one confused. The OP is asking about the R6, not any 7D or 7D2.

But then he says: This is what I want my 6D to do.

I agree your nose is probably activating the touch and drag AF on the rear LCD. I know mine does, so I had to turn off that setting. The only other way to move the focus point is via the joystick. So make sure you aren't inadvertently hitting that.

For drive speed - what lens are you using? If you are in MS or EFCS mode with an older EF lens, you'll top out around 8fps shooting speed. Newer EF or any RF lens can do 12fps in H+ mode. If you go to ES mode, you'll get 20FPS with almost any lens. Also note these figures are assuming the lens is wide open, and the shutter speed suitably high. So if you are stopping down, that could be slowing you down on some lenses.

But like Mike said - you set AF mode to continuous, and then drive mode to H+, and that is max speed mode for an R6. I shoot mine in ES mode for soccer and get about 1500 shots/game. I'd say about 1450 of them are in focus. Its way better than any DSLR in that respect.

This YouTube video with Rudy Winston of Canon is one of the best I've seen on R6 focusing:

It's LONG, but very informative.

You should also try and take advantage of the Eye Detect technology. To get the most out of your R6 you need rethink the way you shoot. It's a whole new exciting world.
