all the designer colors - really? What does that say about the target audience for this camera.

People who like colors other than black/silver

They are out there - otherwise we'd all be driving black or silver cars and wearing only black or silver clothes!

Yeah I got one to compare with my silver A7cR. I sold the A7cR and kept the Zf.

Guess what, I'm using the smallrig grip like I was using the Sony grip extender on the A7cR.

I used voigtlander lenses on both and preferred it on the Zf. I also use the ETZ adapter when necessary.

Sometimes you just got to try something and it will click and other times it won't. I like the heavy weight of the camera because it reminds me of well made machined item. Like a heavy swiss watch or a machined tool vs a stamped one. It has flaws and I like it. I also like having it on my desk when I'm at work and the deep black glow of the paint with a manual focus lens.

@saaketham@ can confirm I've pretty much owned every Canon, Nikon, Sony body released in the past four years and almost all their lenses too. I shoot primarily Nikon and Sony, and right now for me this new Zf is the enjoyable experience.

Am I switching? No, but I'll be adding another lens or two to go with it.

I tried ZF with 40mm SE lens, and A7C II + Sigma 35i lens for about a week. In the end, I returned ZF. It's a good camera, way better than Z6 I used few years ago, but A7C2 has better ergo and noticeably better AF speed and accuracy (even with a 3rd party lens attached) in low light situations.

I will wait for ZF2. Hopefully Nikon can make the dials stupidly simple to use like Fujifilm, and release some good small lenses. No, I didn't like the rendering of 40mm f2 lens.

I almost ordered one, but I didn't. I like it because it reminds me of the Nikon FMs I had in the 80's. I have shot Nikon digital on and off but I currently am shooting Sony mostly and have 3 Sony bodies . The things I find disappointing are the 24MP and I actually liked the chrome FM over the black which isn't an option. I also would have preferred 33MP. I like the multi color options but it would cost like $400 more with the 40mm SE lens that I would want.

I thought about getting one and a Voigtlander 35 APO just for fun. I might. Also have been thinking about getting a Leica M to try something different. Just for fun. I am pretty happy with my A1 and GMs as far as what they produce but the fun factor of something like one of the above options cannot be overlooked.

I went through this exact same process a couple of years ago. I documented it in a thread here on FM that you may find interesting reading. For me it was a profound learning experience that has benefited my photography in both the way I experience it, and for me, the images I make.

Leica M is very different that shooting manual on a mirrorless camera. If you click with it is a a wonderful voyage of discovery. I don't think you will get the same experience shooting with the ZF. Not because of any shortcomings in the ZF. Mostly because it will be very close to the same shooting experience as MF on your A1. The Zf just has an interesting retro look to the body, but not such an authentic MF experience as the Leica M.

Anyway, here is a link the the "learning Leica M" thread. I hope you find it interesting.

Nikon anything is a tough sell on the Sony forum. In fact, Sony evangelists frequent the Nikon forum and often disrupt the flow of conversation... so, I guess I'll return the favor.
I'd say that the Zf is one of many cameras that Nikon is using to move DSLR shooters into the Nikon Z-system. It appeals to the "Boomer" group who want to reconnect with their legacy and GenZ shooters who are into retro-gear. I cut my teeth in the film era with a Spotmatic, and while the camera has a nostalgic draw, I'm not into the type of photography to which the camera is best suited. Having dabbled in Leica gear in the last two years, I have now sold it all and maintained my commitment to equipment that meets the needs as a nature photographer.
The Zf tech is probably equivalent to the A74 with less customization, but a cool "fashionable" look. It is well suited to both street photography and vlogging, with the ability to access some of Nikon's class-leading optics or Voigtlander MF lenses.
If you're a Sony user and want to live... or relive... the tactile feel of dials and switches, then it will be a novelty for you... but you might tire of its limited tech and ergonomics. If you're a street shooter who can't afford a M-10.... and can live with an EVF instead of rangefinder, buy a ZF and a high quality and fast Voightlander 35mm lens and enjoy one of the better EVF experiences with a manual focus lens.

Just a few measured thoughts from a Nikon (not-Sony) shooter.

It's too big. If it was A7C size I'd be interested, maybe, but the lens size could be an issue too.

I guess I think of fun as being generated internally without having to be constantly upgraded and bought.

Youre right. That is why I have only thought about it and not pulled the trigger. I think I am just craving new experiences.

Like many other older photographers here, I grew up in the Nikon system. I readily admit I am a dinosaur and am not representative of the larger population of photographers out there.

I always considered myself a brand loyal Nikon shooter. But when it was time to move to mirrorless, Nikon had nothing - so I moved to Sony. However, along the way I did pick up a used Df, as I had quite a lot of legacy Nikon lenses from the 70s and 80s, and a couple from the early 90s. The Df can shoot nearly any F-mount lens
...Show more

You hit the nail on the head. The Df is a really cool concept because it fully supports all of this legacy glass, glass that has aperture rings and makes sense on a dial camera.

A Df II F mount body that is as technically capable as the Zf would be a hell of a thing. It will never happen, sadly.

I've said it from the beginning...Z6 shooters are so hard up for an upgrade that they were blinded to the inadequacies of the Zf and dove in without critical analysis of how the camera actually functions. Funny how many "I tried it and returned it" posts we're seeing, almost like a certain someone said that would happen

A friend of mine shoots an older Pentax DSLR. Pentax offered an upgrade service whereby they could swap out his older sensor and processor with a higher MP one - something in the 40s MP. In the back of my mind, I have sometimes wished the Df had a Z6, 24 MP sensor, though that D4 sensor does shine. Whenever I get "megapixel envy" for only having 16 on the Df, I wish Nikon would offer the same sort of option for the Df. Oh well.

AI upscaling tech is getting pretty good. Lower megapixel shooting isn't the concern it once was, luckily, and there's something to be said about the larger pixel size (lower res) look on full frame.

had hopes it would be designed after the S rangefinder series, I was really ready to jump in, but in the end was just another huge heavy camera
