I had one and was really happy with it...got great results and the size makes it easy to take with you. I couldn't justify keeping it when the 50GM came out...but I'm having 2nd thoughts and will probably pick one up. When traveling there's been too many times when the family has wanted some quick portrait shots in different locations, and I typically don't have my go-to portrait lenses (50GM and/or 135GM) due to size. I think the 55 1.8 would pair great with my A7cR for travel duty.

I always liked full body photos using the 55/1.8, got a cool look to them. I had it, sold it, bought the Zony 50/1.4 (excellent), sold it, bought the Sony 50/1.2, returned it and bought the 55/1.8 again. I still use it at weddings. Tiz good yes?

Based on your last comment, I will just go 35/85 prime combo and skip the 50mm altogether.

Your suggestion is interesting in that I was just doing some research on the Sony 40mm f2.5 G compared to the Sigma 45mm 2.8 and Samyang 35mm 1.8. I think you are correct, although I am a bit conflicted about the Samyang.

The Sony and Sigma tested very close, but I think I would like to keep this lens closer to 35 than 50. And it would, as you noted pair nicely with an 85 or 90....no? Perhaps the 40/90 combo can work.

I did go out with the 55 again, and its fine outside, but indoors it seems a bit too long.

55mm and 58mm have long held an exalted place in stills photography, despite attempts by makers to shoehorn photographers into tightly standardised focal lengths - 35-50-85 etc. Think Otus 55 and Minolta 58mm for example. Zeiss, Canon and Nikon too, at various times (from memory).

These FLs are recognising that shorter telephotos provide the missing link in the makers' induced standardised scheme, and may assist to give the images a more sophisticated appearance to portraits than the rather wide 50mm slot.

They also open the door to a different lens collection of say, 28-40-55 in place of 24-35-50. Good to have the choice.

That's exactly what I'm doing. Those two pieces of equipment were made for each other.

I’ve owned every focal length as a prime from 24mm to 135mm and a 24, 28, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 65, 85, 90, 105, and 135. I recommend you find your desired focal length and then see which lenses you like. For example for me personally I like 28, 40, 85, 105, and 135. Problem is at some of those focal length Sony or other 3rd party vendors have not offered their best quality. So for different lens families I’ve chosen different products. On GM it’s 35, 50, 85, and 135. For Sigma I-series I’m using on A7Cx I’m using 35, 65, and 90 mostly although also have a 50mm. Have also owned Zeiss Batis lenses and liked their 40, 85, and 135. Have not found a 28mm I really want on Sony mount all though I did get the 28/2 used and trying it on an APS-C body as a ~40 equivalent.

Thanks for the post; wow, you can say that again! It is quite complex and at times frustrating trying to sift through the reviews and opinions as to what set of characteristics might work best for me....too many variables.

Your experience with many brands and lenses is a breath of fresh air. Of course my set of use factors will be different, such as: I need to find a set of lenses that needs to meet in general weight and budget constraints. Then try and decide which focal lengths, etc, etc. The good news is that I have some experience with several primes (Samyang 18, 35 and 75) which have been given to my son, so I am starting 'fresh.'

For 35mm my current list of possibles are: Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN, Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G and Samyang AF 35mm F1.8 FE

I believe I listed the kind of photography I enjoy in my original post, and would appreciate any suggestions...thanks
