It's been a wild ride, but let me say I've absolutely loved owned the original R6 over the past 3 years. They haven't been perfect, but they've been the best camera I've ever owned by a long shot. They've been used mainly for weddings, portraits, and event photography and have excelled at basically everything. The minor quirks of the bodies is vastly outweighed by the image quality, speed, reliability and focus accuracy of the cameras.

In 3 years I've owned them I racked up 290k frames on one body and 275k frames on the other body. Neither shutter failed exhibited any ill-effects from the usage. Both cameras worked perfectly when I sold them a couple weeks ago. The only thing that ever went wrong with the cameras was the loose hotshoes early in ownership (that Canon eventually, quietly, fixed).

What did I get in replacement? The R6 Mark II (two of them in fact). I'm having to "relearn" some things with the changes they made with the Mark II, and while I'm unsure about some of the changes, overall I'm happy with them.

I have both and while I usually prefer to work with two of the same bodies, they're similar enough that it's fairly seamless. One thing I did do was tape the stills/video switch on the R6II as a reminder not to use it to 'turn off' the camera.

I think you'll appreciate the better battery life with the R6II!

In sold my R5 for the R62 and R7. I really like the R62. The Detail Set has more programming options. Also one thing it has that my R7 doesn’t is you can assign subject to detect to a button.

I've got tons of frame on my R6 as well. Great camera. With prices where they are now, it reminds me of back in the days of the 40D - it was older, priced great, and the value couldn't be beat for the dollar.

without starting a flame war...

is the R6's loose hot shoe issue a deal breaker?

(especially if someone-me!-is buying a used R6)

thanks in advance for any and all info you care to share.

thumbs up.

I wasn't aware of this problem when I bought mine - it was the demo camera of the local Canon rep and so far this hasn't become apparent. I'm guessing he got the camera very early in the release cycle so it's not likely from later in the production run when this may have been 'silently' fixed. I do use flash a fair amount for event coverage, but the R6II is my primary camera and sees most flash use.

Not sure if this really helps you but it might depend somewhat on how much you use flash and how critical it is to your work.

There appears to be some bodies where the hot shoe would come loose after carrying a large or heavy accessory in it for some time. The fix is straightforward, but since the screws are inside the body you have to send it in to have it done.

I got mine in 2021, have not used the flash shoe extensively and when I do its mostly with a controller, not a large speedlight. But no problems so far.

Only you can decide if its a dealbreaker for you. Most people do not have the problem. Some people never use a flash anyway, at which point is a total non-issue. If you plan to run and gun a lot with a speedlight or something, there are still workarounds, such as a cage or L bracket to mount the flash higher or off-axis. That''s more gear, but it works and provides some additional value.

I thought for a wedding photographer his was fairly modest usage.

Not intended to brag (if anything, it could be more something to be embarrassed about), just a point of reference:

My 1DX at left from 2012 and 1DXII from 2016, photo made early 2023. Over the years, lots of youth sports events where it's easy to do 5k+ images covering 20-30 games per day. I think I had about three shutter replacements between the two, and also a mirror box replacement for the 1DXII shortly before the end of the first year warranty period. 1DX counter doesn't show a value greater than 1M. At least with the R6/R6II there's no risk of a mirror box failure! Time will tell how durable they are.

How were you able to determine actuation numbers for the R6?

There's an app called Shuttercount I use for R5's on Mac. It used to give the me the breakdown between Mechanical and Electronic shutter but now it's only giving me a total for a sum of both of MS and ES. So if you use ES only like me, then it could say 300K clicks on the camera but there's no way to confirm those are all ES clicks.

You have to get Shuttercount Pro to get a count for each. Shows in a pie chart. After 10 month my R6m2 was pretty even at 31,000/30,000. I shoot a lot of baseball with MS, the other is football and some other sports I shoot with ES.

I have the Pro version and it was not working recently as I just sold a couple R5's a few weeks ago and it would only give me the sum, and it had an explanation for not giving the breakdown between the two. But I just opened the app and it had an update so I plugged in two more R5's and it's working again. Though I'm not sure of the accuracy because these two have never been shot in MS. I had a couple other bodies last year that were used with MS, but not these two or the two I just sold. Either way, it should give a rough idea of how many ES clicks are on the body.

Never mind the shutter count, I'm amazed at how well the rubber grips held up! Are they original?

Yes, as far as I know they were original! The only unknown is whether any were replaced by Canon during shutter services. Another reason could be because I'm not in a continuously warm/hot climate region. I don't do as wide a range of sports as I used to and therefore not frequently sitting out in the blazing summer sun for hour on end.

I don't consider it a dealbreaker. I believe Canon fixed this somewhere along the way and tightened my hotshoes for me free of charge - even though one of my R6 bodies was outside of warranty.

I used Shutter Count App for Mac OS.

Crazy thing is about my shutter actuations is that 99% of them are single shot. I almost never used high speed drive on these cameras.
