Maybe I am missing something but why not get a SSD thunder bolt enclosure with speeds to 40 gigs/s?
Simple answer is cost saving, convenience and durability.
These SSD 2 and 4TB portable enclosures from SanDisk and Samsung using the USB-C style of connection are less expensive than the “kits” put together using a metal style box USB4 enclosure and a separate NVMe. I just put together a 2nd Acasis kit with a WD 4TB NVMe during the BF sales and it cost about $335 total. The last 4TB SanDisk SSD Extreme V2 I bought was $199 on sale. Many of the SSD's are listed as impact and weather resistant so they can be used in outdoor locations with better reliability. And if and when there is a warranty issue it is all on the sole SSD manufacture for warranty repair.
With a separate enclosure and a non-same manufacturer NVMe setup, such as my Acasis enclosures with a 2TB Samsung and 4TB WD Black NVMe, it is up to the individual who put the kit together to find out which item is not working, the enclosure or NVMe, and to seek replacement from that company. There are some companies who provide both the enclosure and NVMe together and would cover both if repair was needed, but you pay a 25% or more premium for this at purchase time. Also there are many times compatibility issues between the enclosure boxes and certain models of NMVe, and the speed advantage the enclosure boxes have, can be severely mitigated. As an example Samsung 970 model NVMe had issues with the M1 Macs released 2 years ago and the Write speeds were very slow, less than 1/2 the Read speed. Their more expensive 980 Pro NVMe model I bought was just fine after a FW upgrade. So the enclosure style NVMe boxes are not yet ready for all users, but for people who like to roll they own, they are great.
I use both types, having 2 sets of the SanDisk 4TB SSD units being used as a 8TB RAID for almost 2 years now without issue for all LR/PS catalog photo storage and the Acasis 2TB MVMe (which I just went to 4TB with) as my startup drive on my 27” iMac. The Acasis enclosure is faster at 2,700-2,800 MB/s, but by doubling up the SanDisks in a RAID configuration, which is simple to do with Apples Disk Utility, they provide just about double the speed of a single SSD in the 1,800 MB/s +/- R&W speed range. It is so simple just to grab the 2 SanDisk SSD and bring them along on trips where I use my MBP 14” Pro M1 laptop, I just plug them into 2 TB3 ports and have instant access to my entire photo catalog. For daily use of LR/PS you won't notice the speed difference as even a single SSD at 850 to 900 MB/s is fast enough.
