Honestly, I think that they will ensure all those criteria are met at a point they believe is the right balance. Adding "then some" will always compromise something. Releasing too early is probably what they are most afraid of.

The rumored specs make sense in my opinion. Honestly, 30 MP is not low resolution and 50 MP is not high resolution. They are both balanced resolutions today. You can get high resolution as in 100 MP with a GFX100 for the same kind of money as the R3.

I agree they will ensure the R1 meets the right balance. The "then some" WILL happen because Canon wants the world to know who the top dog really is once and for all in the mirrorless game. They've had Sony gnawing away at their ankles long enough. I suspect there is a very good reason they have been working on the R1 for 6 years. We've known about working prototypes out in the field for a very very long time now.
I have full faith they'll get it right. But then again, I've been called a fanboy a few times so...

That was interesting problem with the rubber composition of the pads that the mirror landed on. (I sent my 1D III in for the recall, even though I hadn't seen the problem)

A mirrorless camera is naturally immune to problems with the mirror.

I have high confidence that Canon won't repeat the 1D III problem

Sure, anything is possible. But the scenario you are speculating about (that the R1 will launch with poor autofocus or some other fatal flaw) is highly unlikely, I think. There may be some bugs and teething issues, as there usually are with new cameras, but that is materially different than what I think you are suggesting.

The 1D Mark III is such ancient history that hearing someone bring it up in a discussion about the R1 is a real head scratcher.

Some of the patents applied by Canon give information about potential problems with new technologies.

A recent and relevant example is for quad pixel autofocus:
https://www.canonwatch.com/canon-patent-quad-pixel-phase-detection-auto-focus/

Especially the part about image sensors with aspect ratios other than 1:1, and how sensor plane phase detect AF would tend to bias in either the horizontal or vertical direction. If Canon did not test well enough, and did not pay attention to this, it could have been discovered as a problem with the cameras.

It is not likely that Canon will slip such things through, but as always is the case with new technologies, it is not possible to anticipate everything. Normally the scale of things will be in the "improvemets" range though.

The reason I brougth this up, was not to suggest that we will see disasters, but to remind ourselves why a 1 series Camera is expected to a certain degree to be conservatively specced in order to preserve the reliability.

Yes, good points. I do know that Canon field tests its new cameras with a set of professionals under NDA to take feedback and identify issues. I'm not sure if this process is more robust now than it was during the early 1D model years. Hopefully, most of the bugs will have been caught and ironed out before the retail release. And of course, the Olympic Games is always a crucible for proving new gear for Canon, Nikon, and now Sony. By the time we mortals will get our mits on this camera, Canon will have had plenty of real world shooting behind it.

Are you super bummed Canon used the term "flagship" in their R1 introduction? Are you rolling your eyes at Canon now too?

COMING SOON! The EOS R1

TOKYO, May 15, 2024—Canon Inc. announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R SYSTEM equipped with an RF mount and is aiming for a 2024 release.

The EOS R1 is a mirrorless camera geared toward professionals that brings together Canon’s cutting-edge technology and combines top-class performance with the strong durability and high reliability sought in a flagship model. This camera will dramatically improve* the performance of both still images and video and meet the high requirements of professionals on the frontlines of a wide range of fields including sports, news reporting, and video production.

This camera employs the newly developed image processor DIGIC Accelerator in addition to the pre-existing processor DIGIC X. The new image processing system, composed of these processors and a new CMOS sensor, enables large volume of data to be processed at high speeds and delivers never-before-seen advancements in Auto Focus (AF) and other functions.

By combining the new image processing system and deep learning technology to an advanced degree, Canon has achieved high-speed and high-accuracy subject recognition. For example, subject tracking accuracy has been improved so that in team sporting events where multiple subjects intersect, the target subject can continually be tracked even if another player passes directly in front of them. In addition, the AF “Action Priority” function recognizes subject movement by rapidly analyzing the subject’s status. In moments during a sports game when it is difficult to predict what will happen next, this function automatically determines the player performing a certain action, such as shooting a ball, as the main subject and instantly shifts the AF frame, thereby helping to capture decisive moments of gameplay.

The combination of the new image processing system and deep learning technology will help to improve image quality. Canon implements the image noise reduction function, which has been previously developed and improved as part of the software for PCs, as a camera function to further improve image quality and contribute to user creativity.

Canon is working on field tests for this camera, and will support capturing definitive and impactful moments at international sporting events to be held in the future.

Going forward, Canon will continue to expand the EOS R SYSTEM lineup of fascinating cameras and RF lenses, thereby continuing to meet the demands of a wide range of users and contribute to the development of photography and video culture.

* In comparison to EOS R3 (released in November 2021)

If this leak is true then the R1 feels more like a competitor to the A9iii.
