The R5II is close at hand because B&H is discounting the R5 with a $999 off Black Friday sale that became a $999 off Black Monday sale, that has been extended to a $999 off Cyber-week sale.

We will learn a lot about Canon technology in 2024 with the R5m2/R1 launch. While the sensor in the R3 is excellent, we have not yet seen a high MP stacked sensor comparable to the A1 or Z8/Z9. Canon will need to beat those cameras and then be competitive against the A1m2 when it launches. They have to put their very best sensors into both cameras...high MP and fast readout (and QPAF).

If they go with a higher resolution sensor, i.e. more than 24-30MP, it needs to be 48MP or more. This is so medium resolution is at least 24MP.

I understand why they want it out before the R5II but if it's not a high MP body I think they'll lose a lot of people who have been waiting for one. The R5II will come after because it will be 90% of the camera for 1/2 the price.

No, its intended market will buy it. It will probaly be 30 mg sensor. The R5 will be the high megapixel body. just my thoughts. Peace Mac

Well, whatever it turns out to be, forum warriors will find some reason to criticize it. That's my prediction.

The R1 rumor looks more like a R3 II...either that or the R3 really was supposed to be the R1 initially then they thought it couldn't hold up to the competition. I have been waiting for the R1 for years now. If these are the specs, I believe it will be a pass for me. I prefer Sony's or Nikon's flag ship cameras. In fact, I own the Sony A1 and still love it. I don't feel like Canon has been keeping up with the competition lately. It is a shame since I want to support them.

Just those two items alone will be what destroys all the competition as well as all previous Canon bodies to date.
I suspect it will take Sony many years to catch-up to this tech. You can bet they will be reverse engineering it as soon as they can get their hands on this R1 and making any tweaks they can to get around patent infringements.
Nikon isn't even in the same room or planet with their AF system. From what I've read, their flagship Z9 barely matches the AF of the nearly 4 year old R5. Some reports say it isn't even that good. I just hope this doesn't kill off Nikon completely as we need them around regardless of how small their market share is. Thankfully Nikon threw a few "Hail-Mary" passes with their wildlife lens line-up and slapped some bargain basement prices on a few of them to stay relevant.

A few of other spec's has my curiosity going.

Looking forward to the next few weeks as things start to trickle out on this beast.

Canon has doesn't chase the MP game against the competition so not really a surprise. I'm sure numerous other features noted with this rumor could be a firmware upgrade for the R3, but you have a better chance of being hit by a meteor than Canon adding new functionality. Canon like Apple it's all about loyalty, but as a creator people are already shifting to other brands especially the video.

Another angle for Canon is they realize that a 30mp image is sufficient because if you want bigger and better images you can signup for the DPP image optimization subscription services for better images. Upscaling is getting super sophisticated but not always something for every workflow.

I hope the R3 is the last sports body I have to buy. If the R5 ii gets the same treatment with incremental features like that in the R6 ii got, not the best but sufficient I suppose. The R1 might already be too late.

If these specs are accurate then it's difficult to know what to think other than this is really an R3mkII. The upgraded AF and DR are intriguing as are the faster readout rate. Quite candidly, I am surprised by the video specs as this is one area Canon seems to place a lot of emphasis.

Likewise if this is any indication of the current trajectory, the R5mkII will likely sport simple improvements such as an upgrade to the AF and readout rate. Even the prospect of a stacked sensor seems unlikely.

I love the suspense. This thing will rock the action shooting scene for sure. Hopefully the leaks keep shaking out over the next few weeks and we see where it really lands. The magic could be the AF algorithm, better cross type sensitivity, etc....more surprises could come.

That spec list with just a few more MPs added on would be looking really good.
Everything is still rumor right now. Not sure how accurate Canon rumors have been lately as I haven't followed them as closely as I used to. But it sounds like CR has verified this list as being fairly accurate from trusted source.

Be careful not to be blinded by desire. All these cameras are over-hyped in one way or the other. Way too much hyperbole every time something new is released. A1, Z9, R3, R5....all of them can be improved in more ways than one.

We've got Z8 owners complaining they don't have the latest Z9 FW when Z8 FW is only one update behind and when that was the latest update on Z9 it was infallible according to Nikon shooters.....now if one reads the complaints it sounds like it is just 3rd class FW that can't focus on a bird if it tried

You brought up Z9 vs R5....the R5 certainly can hold its own against the Z9 on the 3.0 FW last tested. I haven't tried the 4.0. But...the Z9 is still a much better camera to shoot rapid action with because of the overall EVF experience. It takes more than just predictive AI AF to make one system better than the other overall when actually shooting.

I'd entertain an R1 if it is going to be class leading like you predict. But I wouldn't actually follow through unless Canon put out a lens lineup like Nikon has done over the past 2 years. Just more tradeoffs. If I had my choice based on current product out there I'd take an A1 guts in an R3 shell with some A9III upgrades (not the GS) and the Nikon lenses. Maybe R1 will knock the A1 off my ideal list...maybe not.

As with most prior 1-series digital bodies, I think Canon is targeting the R1 at the sports and action crowd, where high MP counts are less desired (or even wanted) for a streamlined workflow. 30, if these rumors are accurate, would likely be more than enough for the *professionals* who would likely buy this camera.

Well-heeled enthusiasts, on the other hand, might be put off by a flagship body that doesn't match up against the competition's in a top-line spec like this, regardless of what other benefits and advantages it may have.

I predict there will be much ado in the forums.

Canon certainly has a line on what professional action shooters need. I imagine the R1 is designed to fill it as best as Canon currently is able to, engineering wise.

Whatever the spec sheet looks like, the camera is likely going to be expensive, haha.
