As with most prior 1-series digital bodies, I think Canon is targeting the R1 at the sports and action crowd, where high MP counts are less desired (or even wanted) for a streamlined workflow. 30, if these rumors are accurate, would likely be more than enough for the *professionals* who would likely buy this camera.
Well-heeled enthusiasts, on the other hand, might be put off by a flagship body that doesn't match up against the competition's in a top-line spec like this, regardless of what other benefits and advantages it may have.
I predict there will be much ado in the forums.
Canon certainly has a line on what professional action shooters need. I imagine the R1 is designed to fill it as best as Canon currently is able to, engineering wise.
Whatever the spec sheet looks like, the camera is likely going to be expensive, haha.
