So basically what Sony did in March 2021
I really hope Canon can come up with something better than 3yr old ideas.
I thought it was just me... This wish list (along with all the others) are pretty conservative.
I get it, steady and proven is very attractive to some, but to me there is room for improvement. Personally, I was of the mindset that Canon took this amount of time to sort out the global shutter, but when I saw they created a 19MP global shutter in January, there's not a likely option available for the R1 (high res).
Honestly, the Canon pre-shot buffer is not ideal and I hope they are planning a "grown up" version of it. Also, I don't see it as likely that it will be slower than the R6 II, so 40 fps feels like the floor with the potential for something like the R3's 180fps special speed. However, this can be a fluid piece where the framerate may be variable depending on resolution.
One thing a Canon exec mentioned a couple of years ago was, The R1 HAS to have the "wow factor". At the time, I was pretty convinced that was the global shutter at 20'ish MPs, but as soon as the R3 took up the modest pixel count I can't see a scenario where the R1 is modest as well. So, with the pixel count almost required to be elevated, what could the wow be? The "master of everything" rumor is wow, but I was under the impression from the exec's interview that he meant more. Not really sure what else will fall under that but I guess we'll see.
I'm a little worried about the cost. I feel like it's got to be more expensive than the R3, and I'd assume by a reasonable amount. I'm thinking the 1D vs 1Ds type price increase. IMO, that wouldn't be any less than $7,500, which would be quite painful if they really did recycle Sony's A1 specs with a slight one up on a spec or two.
Here's my guess:
$7,500 - $8,500
New pre-shot buffer
Stacked BSI sensor
12k video (my guess at their "Wow")
85MP
Variable stills framerate, 30 fps at full res, 120-180fps for a short time at a lowered res. with AF.
Dual CF Express B
Virtual TC (Crop/up-res in camera)
Would be nice to get Zebras in stills
Breathing correction
