This camera will be the direct competitor to the A1m2.

3 ms readout speed
R3 like dynamic range
60 MP (in order to trump the A1m1)
R3 ergonomics
Dual CFEx B

(This will be a fun thread. Thanks macwest.)

Going from a 1DxII to an R5 here are my wishes

Stick with the LP-E batteries

Matching CF express slots (having two styles of cards is a pain)

More the 40 less than 60 MP (seems to be the sweet spot)

IBIS

Simplify menus and settings. Example: Going from shooting a racecar to shooting the winners circle requires a host of menu changes to get the camera to work right in both situations, especially at night. It is frustrating to have to take precious time an figure all that out.

Built it to take some use and abuse. (my R5 has has the main dial and viewfinder replaced)

Have it fit the hands of an adult. (admittedly I have large hands)

I'd say global shutter but they would never get me to but an R1 markII

40-45 MP (62mp will be in the R5 Mk II, 2 more MPs than the a7Rv)
Double stacked sensor (no GS) with sub 4 ms readout
Improved eye focus from R3
New processor (with AI chip?)
Probably R3 form factor, but I would prefer R5-style
4-way flippy screen a la Sony a7RV
Dual CFEx B
Moving the on/off button again :-)

So basically what Sony did in March 2021

I really hope Canon can come up with something better than 3yr old ideas.

At this point, most of the advancements are little things and software features. I'm sure there will be more than this. These are just the main features I'd look for.

Now that we know it isn't a global shutter, I'm sure there will be DR and noise improvements. Would be cool to get 45mp at the same noise level as the R3, for example. And 45mp full raw at R3 or greater speeds would be nice. 60-80mp...well then I'd hope they have a non-cropped lower res mode.

I should have added QPAF in there, but others have already covered that.

I thought it was just me... This wish list (along with all the others) are pretty conservative.

I get it, steady and proven is very attractive to some, but to me there is room for improvement. Personally, I was of the mindset that Canon took this amount of time to sort out the global shutter, but when I saw they created a 19MP global shutter in January, there's not a likely option available for the R1 (high res).

Honestly, the Canon pre-shot buffer is not ideal and I hope they are planning a "grown up" version of it. Also, I don't see it as likely that it will be slower than the R6 II, so 40 fps feels like the floor with the potential for something like the R3's 180fps special speed. However, this can be a fluid piece where the framerate may be variable depending on resolution.

One thing a Canon exec mentioned a couple of years ago was, The R1 HAS to have the "wow factor". At the time, I was pretty convinced that was the global shutter at 20'ish MPs, but as soon as the R3 took up the modest pixel count I can't see a scenario where the R1 is modest as well. So, with the pixel count almost required to be elevated, what could the wow be? The "master of everything" rumor is wow, but I was under the impression from the exec's interview that he meant more. Not really sure what else will fall under that but I guess we'll see.

I'm a little worried about the cost. I feel like it's got to be more expensive than the R3, and I'd assume by a reasonable amount. I'm thinking the 1D vs 1Ds type price increase. IMO, that wouldn't be any less than $7,500, which would be quite painful if they really did recycle Sony's A1 specs with a slight one up on a spec or two.

Here's my guess:

$7,500 - $8,500
New pre-shot buffer
Stacked BSI sensor
12k video (my guess at their "Wow")
85MP
Variable stills framerate, 30 fps at full res, 120-180fps for a short time at a lowered res. with AF.
Dual CF Express B
Virtual TC (Crop/up-res in camera)
Would be nice to get Zebras in stills
Breathing correction

I think the R1 will be just a refined A1 with a few more improvements that you would expect over a 3yr old body. And then the A1mkII will come out and put Canon behind again.

There was a patent filing for internal ND filters. I wonder if that could be part of the WOW factor? 45-60mp, unlimited 8k 60, internal ND, preshoot, dual CFX, stacked sensor, QPAF or other solution to the perceived/experienced AF limitations in certain situations, power efficiency improvements, etc. I'm sure it'll have smarter AF tracking as well.

I got the impression from the big white pricing that Canon wants to have the top end. I think they could try and price this camera close to $10k. I hope they don't. But they might. That's why I put the price on my wish list!

1) Keep the three back buttons for focus like on the R5, one for spot stills, one for zone, one for eye tracking.

2) Let the photographer choose how many shots when the shutter is pressed in ES

3) Stacked BSI sensor

4) Dual CF Express B

5) 50-60mpix

6) no AA filter

Not interested in the R1, but I hope it can solve the only real problem, the Achilles heel of all mirrorless cameras, that would be initial focus acquisition from gross defocus.

OK, perhaps I'm daft, but I'm having a hard time understanding the place in Canon's lineup that the R1 (as posited by the rumor mill) would fill. The R3 seems to be the new 1-Series style fast sports-type camera (and expensive), and yet everyone is expecting the R1 to eclipse it as a 'fast', moderate-res camera... and yet-yet, the 1Ds/5Ds has still not been replaced as the MP-monster!

Is there a place in the lineup for two pro-level bodies that do similar things (e.g. a sports-type camera)? If the R3 is technically lacking for that level of camera, why not just update the R3 for that particular ('sports') market? Everything in the industry/market is pointing toward higher-end cameras falling out of favor as time goes on, and fast sports-type cameras are about as niche as a high-end DSLR-style (i.e. interchangeable lens) camera can get, especially considering how capable consumer-level cameras have become.

Although I loved the 1-Series build back when I shot sports, I don't think the 1Ds build was necessary for what later ended up being the 5Ds market (high-res studio/landscape camera). I'm astounded that Canon appears to have abandoned the 5Ds in the current mirrorless environment, especially since many were sold and used as workhorses by a wide range of pros for many years. That ~$3800 price point is gravy.

Yes, I'll be ready for the R5II when it ships, but what I really want is is an R5s.
