How is Nikon 24-120 F4 S?

Been debating about giving Z8 a try and one of the lenses that I'm really interested in 24-120 F4 (currently using Sony 20-70 F4), so would like to know what people think of that lens? Does it keep up with the AF of Z8?

On my Z9 it's a match made in heaven. Super fast to focus accurately. Sharp into all corners and center. Nicely built but not a boat anchor in weight. Downright ideal. Indispensable if I do say so. If I'm not shooting birds (with my 100-400S) it's the ONLY other lens on my camera. NO compromise.

I don't have any Z lenses that "don't keep up" with AF.

it lives and breathes on my body and is used in most lighting and conditions. i get the shot with this tool.

shot on a ship/ferry that used to transport cargo and trains from one island to another. now a museum

it keeps up with the AF on the Z9 w/o an issue

it is also very usable as a closeup lens too

I love the 24-120 f4. If you don't need f2.8 often then there isn't much to debate, just buy it. The 24-120 range works much better for me vs the 24-70 range.

Agree with everything said so far. This is my constant companion lens when not shooting birds with my telephoto lens.

I am still hanging with my 24-70, but if I were starting from scratch I would get this instead. I have never heard anybody say anything bad about it.

It's the best 24-XXX lens available optically, so if that's the range you want, you're all set. It's a very popular lens and is even a bit better than Nikon's own Z 24-70/4. The extra 15mm is nice as well compared to the closest alternatives. You won't be disappointed with it.

None of the Z lenses or even any of the modern F mount lenses for that matter have trouble keeping up with the AF on the Z8/Z9. Total non-issue there.

So MANY reviews and opinions have been posted regarding this lens and IMO this lens is one of the better reasons to join the Z system.. I do not own it though, so I have no answer to your AF question.

Even though the CameraLabs review gave it a 'highly recommend' rating, it's worth reading their comment about corner sharpness beyond 50mm, which could simply have been a problem with their sample..

The z 24-120 and the z 50 1.8s are my two lens Z combination for my Z9. When going out for personal photos these two lenses are all I really need.

I have nothing but positive things to say about this lens on my Z6 and consider it the most useful general purpose lens in the system.

I enjoyed my 24-70/4 while I had it, but I prefer the sunstars from the 24-120 and really am glad to have the extra range.

Thank you for all the replies. This is definitely one of the reasons for my interest in Z8 (second being Megadap adapter). So I will definitely be the first native lens I will buy (assuming I decide to stick with Nikon) 😄

It is clearly the best 24-1xxmm f4 lens ever designed, ahead of all the 24-105mm although it covers all the way to 120mm.
