Canon R8 Photo/Video Mode

When you switch from photo to video, do your setting remain for each?

What I'm looking for is separate settings for photo and video, so that if you need two different settings, you can dial in one for video and one for photo and switch back/forth?

Hope that makes sense?

The reason I ask is my Fuji cameras change everything. If I need 1/60th second at 30 fps, and ISO 200 for video, and change to still photos, I need to re-adjust my settings for photos if I was shooting stills at 1/500 @ ISO 1600, for example. It's time consuming.

It would be nice to have separate settings and be able to switch back/forth between stills/video on the go.

C1,c2 are duplicated for video vs stills, so you really have c1 still, c1 videos, and c2 still, c2 video.

eg When you turn from still to video at c1, on left top you go from c1 still to c1 video. They are independent.

So make use of c1,c2 (video vs still)

and eg, C1 can be set to either reset to saved or to change every time you change it.

From my experience the R6II keeps the previously used settings for each so you don't need to carefully go through and make sure it's all the way you had it last time. I'm guessing the R8 should be the same (it's basically an R6II in a different body, minus IBIS and a few small details) because it has the same stills/video switch.

I was not really sure what you meant here, so I tested functions on my R8:

I turned to [still mode] Av priority, and changed the self timer on, and tested it, and then switched over to Tv priority, and it changed too. So Av and Tv modes were not independent for still mode.

ditto on iso. I moved to 125k iso, it moved it on both Av and Tv mode. [in still mode]

I then switched over to video mode [turned top left dial to video] and moved from 4k/60 to 4k/30, it changed both settings in Av and Tv mode.

[For completeness, I turned to video mode/c1 and change 4k/30 to 4k/60, and turned the camera off and on, and it reverted to 4k/30. [I have the camera set not to remember changes in c1 mode]. The fps I had selected in still mode do not change video mode.]

In still mode, I then changed back to 4k/60. Av and Tv mode both changed back to 4k/60 but obviously Tv was able to set shutter speed (I used 1/125 as close to 2 times 60) while Av set the shutter to 1/30.

I checked back and forth between video mode and still mode, after I reverted to 4k60, and the 4k30 in video change did not change. So video settings in Av and Tv are independent of still mode Av and Tv.

So I think generic changes made in non c1,c2 modes apply to all Av,Tv, M, modes - for both video and stills, with video and stills being independent. But while in c1 do not affect c2, and you have a choice of having them stick or going back to your saved settings.

Likely it is easier to shoot video from the video mode and realize that changes made in Tv mode will carry over to the Av mode. And I just find C1, C2 easier - I use c1 for 30fps and c2 for 60fps. And for a video focussed person you might want to change to option to let c1 changes carry on after power off and on.

Hopefully this is clear and useful.

A summary is - video and still settings are independent. Changes made in av mode apply to tv mode [but video and still mode are independent]. C1 and C2 are independent between video and stills. C1 and C2 can revert back to saved settings or stay where you change them at your option. eg changing fps in Av mode does not change the fps in C1,C2.

BTW as a predominant still shooter, I think the dial for video vs still, is a easier to use in the field than my r5 (no video vs still analog button), however I like the r5 (R5ii?) better for having one more custom mode (c3). I prefer my r8 for video because its easier to quickly switch to video and I don't use 8k (R8 does not do 8k).

BTW2, the r5 (r6ii?) permits savings to your card so that you can revert back by uploading savings. r8 does not.

I find that for me, there are so many features in the r8 now (vs my old 5diii) like electronic and burst ... that I am sometimes confused switching to video or switching between wildlife and stills, or just stills (AEB to non AEB in the dark). Its would be easier to have three cameras (stills, wildlife or video).

There are so many options and interactions between setting and shutter modes and video vs stills - I get confused and just find c1 and c2 so much easier when I am in a hurry, which is usual with wildlife and abrupt sunrise ( ).

^ R6II does not allow saving settings to the memory card. It’s not a ‘pro’ enough camera, apparently, to my displeasure. Given how many settings can be changed on these cameras, being able to save these should be standard on every camera.

How you explained it above is a bit difficult to follow, but your conclusion is the same as mine: video and stills settings are independent and don’t change.
