Godox MS300 flash sync issues

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Godox MS300 flash sync issues

I'm using Godox MS300 studio flashes and a Godox XproS trigger on the Sony A1.
The flash sync speed should be 1/400 with mechanical shutter and 1/200 with electronic shutter, but those speeds cause a dark band on the top edge. At full power it's quite thin but at minimum power it's a long gradient very far into the image. To get rid of it I need to use 1/250 in mechanical or 1/125 in electronic.
I tried the setup with an A7RIII as well, and it also gets a dark band at its specified flash sync speed (1/250).

I have tried every setting I can think of but nothing seems to help. Rear curtain sync does make the image slightly brighter, though.

Is the MS300 simply too slow?

I have contacted Godox support but they have not replied yet.

The a1 only achieves 1/400th sync when this is enabled: MENU → (Exposure/Color) → [Flash] → [Flash Sync Spd. Prty.] → "On" or "Auto"

If that's "Off" you have 1/320 mech sync. If you're using "Auto", try "On".

It appears that the aftermarket flash products often have a limitation imposed upon them in using same brand radio trigger for remote flash...the radio trigger transmitter/receiver induce a propogation delay in the signal getting to the flash, resulting in the need to SLOW the shutter speed by about -1/3EV to eliminate the dark band in the captured photo...shoot with 1/200 rather than the usual x-sync 1/250 of your camera.
