p.1 #1 · Lens Cleaning Solution - Koala

Hi all,

I’m a little paranoid at the moment as I didn’t use a lens cleaner that’s usually recommended for camera lenses. I use a lens cleaner from a brand called Koala for my eye glasses and the website says it’s safe for coated camera lenses too. However, when I cleaned my 16-35 GM IK lens and dried it, it left white streaks all over. My usual breath and micorofiber cloth was able to remove the streaks and the glass now looks fine but I’m really worried I stripped the coating because it’s doesn’t seem to be recommended anywhere for camera lenses (other than their own advertising of course).
It claims to be alcohol and ammonia free and made of surfactants and deionized water but I’m still worried.
Any advice?
I should stick to my usual methods as I’ve never encountered this issue before.

Pretty well-reviewed product, I wouldn't worry too much. A lot of the 'tried and true' lens cleaning solutions contain alcohol and/or ammonia, including my preferred Residual Oil Remover (ROR).

Your lens is fine...for the streaks, did you spray directly on the lens? Or use a new microfibre cloth?

Thanks! Puts my mind at ease. It was my first time trying any type of lens cleaner on a camera lens and only because I was clumsy and put my sweaty fingers on the lens.

Yes, I sprayed onto a brand new microfiber cloth after using blower to remove any dust or grit. That’s why I was concerned as I never noticed this streaking on the my eyeglasses with this product.

Don't buy unknown shit products to put on your 3k dollar lens. Get stuff you know that works. Zeiss makes great lens cleaning products

HereI use wipes and the spray cleaners. I have used Zeiss products for years

OKay im going to throw down my 50 years as a working Pro

STOP TRYING TO CHEAT the money

Buy the best SD cards you can find, NEVER risk on cheap crap
Buy great cleaning product, spend the money
Buy REAL OEM batteries.

Sure this stuff may work but its also stuff that can be bad , not work or simply crash and burn on you

Every job I have shot its a life or death situation as im working for clients, you simply can't deliver nothing. Protect your self

Off podium

This stuff is not a joke it's not about saving a few dollars but is about making sure you don't f__k up as it counts.

Sorry it just had to be said. 50 years and I always delivered images to my clients , my workshops and to myself. Thats a feat that only can be done by being careful.

Hmm... got to agree with Guy here. Use Zeiss products.

FYI... breath contains all sorts of 'stuff' not the best solution IMO.

Non-counterfeit zeiss products are hard to find here and even reputable camera shops sell the Chinese knock-offs sold under the zeiss badge. I no longer live in Canada because of work, so shipping from B&H is extremely pricy for me. Hence, I resorted to this well reviewed cleaner from Amazon (NOT US) after I ran out of the zeiss cleaning fluid (which I only used when it was needed the most).

I was more concerned about the durability of the supposedly fragile nanoAR 2 coating Sony has been boasting about on their new lenses and whether it’s possible to strip these coatings with one clean. However, seems they’re more durable than I first thought.

I’ll take your advice and pick up a 200 pack and some fluid in NY next month! Thanks!
