However, the ancient EF 28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM was pretty bad, often racking backwards and forwards and settling somewhere clearly out of focus. It seems to back focus at close distances at the wide end even when locking focus and also was transmitting incorrect aperture readings, showing f2.8 was available at all ends of the zoom.

I take it you're turning the camera off when swapping lenses?

And yes the majority lenses made in the past 30 years will happily resolve 40Mpix

Interesting, which lens were you using, my 10-18mm doesn't do a lot chattering noise because it's fairly quiet and the aperture is kinda slow (f/4.5-5.6) so it doesn't really seem to need to depending on the scene.

So I put the H2S into Aperture Priority and there wasn't any chattering of the blades.. Then I put it into Shutter Priority and of course to keep up with the change in scene and live view the aperture blades opened and closed.

I can happily report that the EF 24-105mm f3.5-5.6 STM works pretty well on the Fringer based on initial tests, though I possibly detect some back focus at very close focus distances, similar to the EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM.

I'm pleased with this lenses' performance so far as I wanted it to shoot some slides on my old EF bodies when travelling but also using is as a short tele lens on the Fuji APSC bodies. I used such a combination in the past when travelling, having an ultrawide 10-24 lens and a 24-105, which gives a reasonably high quality effective focal range on APS-C from 16mm to around 160mm with only two lenses.

I'm wondering if there is a way to do micro AF adjustments with the Fringer or X-T5? This is the first time I have ever encountered a back focussing issue on a contrast detect AF system, although perhaps it is using the phase detect part of the AF system only.
