I'm curious what you all think will happen to R5 pricing when R5II is released.

Looks like the street price of the R6 has dropped about $500 from launch. Expect similar from R5? I'd think selling it at $3300US would be a bit high, unless the mkII comes in at higher than $3800.

I'm thinking to get a second body and some extra MP would be nice to try. Just don't know if the R5II will be enough of an upgrade to justify what it may cost. Thinking their could be some decent deals on the R5 this season. Just wondering how much risk in $ there might be in skipping those to see the release of the II?

I know its not a question that can be answered with certainty. But my wife get sick of hearing me talk about it, and besides you all probably have better history on pricing than she does!

THanks,
Brian

We need a forum for guessing the future:

Why wait? Full warranty refurb for $3,059.00 at the Canon store, now.

https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/refurbished-eos-r5-body

Refurbs will likely be even lower when the Mk-2 is released.

Well, I predict, it will go down.

You're welcome.

If you need one and have the money get one, I don't really get the people who are concerned about the future releases as far as buying today. But I guess I'm buying used anyway. usually older, using it til it quits so I'm not too concerned about resale value

Canon's new cameras will try to match the Sonys and will raise just to show the customers they are competitive with sky high Sony prices. Nikon is now the low cost leader.

Why not buy a like new used one for around $2500 or less? I just sold a couple R5's in like new condition for less than $2500. It looks like there's several for sale currently on the B&S.

As with any new body release, there will be a flurry of R5's for sale when the R5II is released and then it will taper off. I suspect there's a lot of people like you waiting for the opportunity to buy one. The R5 is so good it could last a lot of people many more years as it does everything really well.

Depends on the retail pricing of the R5 II

$3000-$3300 new

subtract $300-$500 for refurbed.

Used will be $2000 - $2500.

I have bought used before, a number of lenses actually. So this is an option as well.

I don't really want to spend $3k now, to figure out I really want the mkII and have to spring for that plus a loss on what I might get for the R5 I just bought a few months ago. But I also don't want to figure out that I don't want the mkII and missed some great deal on a new R5 on black Friday weekend.

First world problems, I know.

I suppose buying a used R5 after the mkII announcement might solve both of those problems. Don't buy it if I want the mkII, and the prices will probably similar on used R5s if I decide I don't want the mkII.

I don't know what Canon has up their sleeve for the R5II but it needs to be quite an improvement for a lot of people to upgrade. Like a really fast readout and the R3'ish level AF. I think these will be the two big ones and everything else is the normal incremental improvements. Then it comes down to where they price it on initial offering.

why refurb ? a new from a US dealer is $3000 regularly ( no tax , free shipping ) on CPR ... https://www.cpricewatch.com/blog/2023/11/november-street-price-sale-r5-2999-r7-1129-r8-1249-r10-699/

$3059 from Canon store is NOT a com·pet·i·tive price ( plus tax remember )

so when R5II will be out ( when and if ) there will be better deals - unless Canon manages to unload all R5 by that time further in 2024

They are already getting pretty cheap on e-bay. I am waiting until the R5II comes out then try to snag one for a good price. Unless the R5II turns out to be a killer camera. Then I may talk myself into one.

Hate to say it, but if you're thinking that hard you probably don't need one. Maybe hold off for a bit.

5DsR $3900 for quite some time so the R5 isn't out of line imo.

Need is definitely a strong word. I have some use cases for one though. But I don't need to be in a hurry. Just have a lot of FOMO.

My ideal kit would probably be an R3 and R5. Or if an R5II has the similar rolling shutter performance as an R3 that would do it. But I do like to have 2 bodies.

Used ones in 9+ condition sell for under $1,000 on B&S Forum.

My guess is that Canon will eventually release an R5III, which will trounce the R5II in every way. Eighteen months after release, the 'new' price will drop by over $500. Wait on one of those; it will be FANTASTIC. Unless or course, it goes the way of the 7DIII.

I don't play in the realm of super expensive (to me) cameras. My general plan is to buy what I have a specific use for.

So, the dilemma is,

"I don't know what I want, or when I'll want it, or when available, if I'll want it, or if I want it when available, will I find it affordable, and if not, should I consider the current model, or wait until the future model is discontinued--=your thoughts?"

"When will THEN be NOW?"

"Soon"

No one who knows is going to say. (And it is quite likely that not even Canon yet “knows” the answer, since pricing is a complicated thing involving cost-recovery, expected product life, final camera specifications, positioning within a line-up, competitor pricing, and so on.)

Odds that the list price of a hypothetical R52 would be less than than of the R5 list price at introduction? Extremely low.

Odds that the list price of the new and old models would be the same? Higher but not the highest.

Odds that the list price will be at least a bit higher? Pretty good. But how much higher? Who knows?

time's in your favor here. don't think you'll miss out on a deal on black friday. the price of tech over time is going down and not up, except maybe you have a black paint Leica M that is a limited edition. the Canon R5 is a mass produced item and many working pros and enthusiasts with too much money will unload their R5s to upgrade. If you need the camera now, buy now. If you can wait, then wait. That's true for all future camera releases.

its supply and demand. There were a whole bunch of r5s sold, so as many people upgrade, R5s will drop in price. But R5 is also a very incredible camera even by today's standards. Given that B&H was selling R5+Grip for a short time for $2800, I don't expect new prices to drop below that level, perhaps ever. No new rebate is expected on R5 for Black Friday, but expect a deeper discount on R5c.
