p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sony 300GM with 2xTC

Mark Galer has a very nice review on the new Sony 300mm f2.8GM.

One particular remark caught my attention:
"I think the sharpness when using the 2x tele was the thing that took me most by surprise (apart from the weight)."
Note that this is an answer to a reaction below his youtube video.

I never thought I would actually have any interest in this lens, but then there is the ultra low weight, and when it actually does perform as good with the 2xTC as Mark says (and illustrates b.t.w. with large images on a special flickr page), then I am starting to get interested.

I used the Canon 400mm f4DOII with the 2xTC a lot when I had it, and the sharpness amazed me. The only downside was the rather poor OOF rendering with subjects close to their backgrounds, but that had more to do with it being a DO lens.

I now use the 600GM on the A1, but came from a D500+500PF combo, and have sort of regretted that Sony does not offer a lighter, smaller option to get to 600mm for when I just want to go light ans small. I had the 200-600G for a year on the A1 but although a very good lens, I never really liked the contrast in soft/duller light and the CA that the 600GM simply does not have. It also misses the crispness of the 600GM, understandably, as it is a 1800,- lens.

Nikon recently brought the Z600PF f6.3, and I am sure I am not the only one eying that lens in envy, although I really think it should have been f5.6.
Well, the Sony 300GM with 2xTC is 600mm f5.6, only around 200gr heavier and yes, a bit longer and wider, but I always felt the 500PF was a bit over the top small and light, so the Sony should be fine. It is only slightly more expensive, and offers a 420mm f4 lens with the 1.4TC, great for closer up BIF. The Nikon 600PF cannot do that trick, it is locked at f6.3.
And you get twin linear XD motors with the Sony.

Am I missing things here, or has Sony just introduced a lens that can take the Nikon Z600PF lens envy away?

Here is a shot by Mark Galer at 600mm. What do you think?

That's definitely a badass swiss army knife. I still keep my 300II around as it got a new life with TC's on RF bodies. The 300II with TC's is a great combo but that featherweight of that Sony 300 is a game changer.

It's okay, the Canon forum is pretty sleepy and it's always good to see what the competition is doing. My Canon RF 100-300 2.8 is also tack sharp with the 2x at 5.6 but it's $3500 more than the featherweight Sony.

Edit your original post and under the text body, select the option to post to an additional board (i.e. Sony).

If you want high image quality and focal length flexibility, then IMO the RF 100-300 with TCs is the best solution. But yes, it's larger, heavier and more expensive... and you'd have to switch to Canon.

I've been thinking about the same comparison to the 600pf. The nikon is a lot less expensive (6500 with tc vs 4800), smaller and lighter than the sony combo. The pf is supposed to be incredibly sharp as well. Personally I think the 600pf is a bit overpriced given the price of mint 500pf at $2k or even under, and the also great 800pf at below $6k mint.

Basically, my conclusion is that Canon is way behind Nikon and now Sony in offering innovative offerings in the long end..I'm hoping Canon responds, but the 200-800 doesn't do it for me, that's for sure. I'm straddling the canon and nikon systems now, but would probably dump my canon gear if I could find a 600tc for a reasonable price, or when the 600pf comes down a bit.

The new Sony is very nice for a prime lens. However, I’d much rather have the flexibility of the Canon 100-300 F2.8 if I were in the market for a 300. The flexibility far outweighs the weight and price difference… for me, perhaps not for you.
Personally, For my use, 300mm is too short. I’d have to go with the 400 F2.8, but your needs probably differ.
With respect to the new 200-800, I’m sure it will work for airshows quite well and for wildlife in good light… if you’re not concerned with backgrounds. Personally, it’s not for me. I’m waiting for more on the 200-500 F4 and R5 ll.
I too agree with the comment that Canon has been lagging behind and the reason behind my recent Nikon and OM purchases.
