p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Going to Vegas F1 - interchangeable not allowed - Sony hx99 or Canon sx470

I am going to Vegas F1 races next week. For fun with my wife who really had fun watching drive to survive. So its a date to the races. We have a seat with a view of the pits and the start. We will mostly watch pit action and 100mph race car passes at the finish line. I want to bring a camera with a significant zoom and 4k. And its going to be near mid night (high iso with zoom). Its all just for fun - with a camera and wife.

I have lots of interchangeable cameras (Canon m5, r5, r8, 7dii, a7r2) and lots of lens (100-400, 600f4, 200-400f4....) but the f1 sites says professional (interchangeable lens bodies or long lens more than 400mm) are not allowed. I don't want to have to walk back to the hotel. I am confident that a small compact will be okay.

I am thinking of buying a canon sx740 (24-960mm f/3.3-6.9, equivalent plus 4x digital zoom) or the Sony hx99 (24-720mm equivalent, f/3.5-6.4 plus 4x digital zoom), They are both about $500. I can get a used Canon sx470 for $350.I might just sell it after use or use it for casual or give it to one of my children afterwards - depending how I like the results.
I am bringing my canon 10x30 IS binoculars for my wife which also look to be okay.

Canon pluses - ~20x zoom compared to 50mm. vs ~15x for Sony. I am more familiar with Canon but have used Sony a7r2.

Sony pluses - Raw vs Canon no Raw and better iq, I think. Its hard to tell on iq. The canon looks better at 24mm and the Sony looks better at 720mm and Canon looks just okay at 960mm). Sony is BSI so likely a stop better.

They both 1/2.3" sensor, very small, 4k enabled, similar f-stop, and 300grams.

Between better iq (Zeiss) at zoom and slightly better ISO performance, I am inclined to the Sony Hx99.

-----------------------

My question to you is - anyone used the hx99 at 700mm ( or sx740) equivalent in low light? Waste of time?

Any other thoughts on compact super zoom?

Only the rx10IV meets your criteria though it is 600f4 on its long end. 24fps

It looks better but it would be redundant (and lessor) with about 5 of my lens and bodies and $2200. And quite large.

I am looking for pocketable compact and super zoom and $500. Maybe you are saying - neither sx470 or hx99 will work because its too dark?

R5 + 100-400 go there early and eventually walk back to the hotel. At Monza they check my bag but they always let me in with R5+100-500.

I was debating bringing my r8 and ef100-400 or rf100-400 or even my tilt shift 90 2.8 and Rf24-50. Full frame sure would be better. I will do some more googling on experiences in US and F1. Thanks.

Mabye look at a M6mkII on the used market, and the 18-150 or 50-200mm lens. The body is so small I have gotten it in to venues. people assume its a point and shoot, esp if not carrying a second lens in a different pocket.

Thanks Brian. I have M5 and 50-200. I considered that but 4x zoom at pretty high fstop. The apsc would likely mean a stop improvement. If I was to try, that might be easier than rf100-400 (pretty long).

I went to Silverstone this year with similar seating - Paddock Club, just above the pit lane. I had my 50mm GM on my camera (you can check the pictures I took by looking at my previous posts).

There was someone else there with a 70-200. He took some great shots of the track, but there were only a few spots he could do that from. It depends a lot on the circuit layout.

For the pit lane walk tour he wished he had a shorter lens. My 50mm was OK, but I could have used a 35mm perhaps.

Hope this helps!

P.S. not sure what happened with the 50mm GM thread, all my posts there are gone!

I've never had any issue bringing in big lenses to F1 event in Montreal despite what the fine print says. Lots of regular Joes had 100-400s in the stands.
I've brought in EF200-400TC, 100-400 and 300/2.8 in the past. Usually on 1DX series body.
I'd be surprised if this rule is actually enforced in Vegas as I don't think it is at any venue.
If you are there all three days and have hotel close by then I'd at least bring a decent setup for Friday and see if they are enforcing it.

Knowing Las Vegas, I am sure the Mafia will confiscate lenses and cameras for their group shots. Roll of the dice.

Thanks - I am across the track from the pit lane - 8 rows up. I looked at your pictures and there are helpful to contemplating the opportunity. Much appreciated. Scott

Ah OK, very different angle then. Yes, you could do with a longer lens. Try to figure out if from your vantage point you will be seeing the cars over the fence or through the fence.

Wildly draconian restrictions, pretty disappointing. When I went to the Montreal GP the only restriction was bag size, no issues with my Canon dslr and several lenses.

Hmm...maybe they are going to enforce it?? I don't think there will be great shooting opportunities at Vegas anyways...shooting from grandstands is a waste of time IMO. Better to just enjoy the race. Montreal was great that you could walk to different spots and get much closer to eye level views without shooting through fences.

I do agree for photos is better to go to old circuits where you can buy the standing access ticket (also the cheapest) and go everywhere at track level like in Monza, costs way less and great photo opportunities. You change every session position or even during the session and you have also bigger diversity.

Following the race: grandstands
Photos: grass access

No interchangeable lens rules, and giving sufficient attention to the wife, and mostly enjoy is what makes me think the fit in the pocket Sony Hx-99 - 720mm, 4k, 10fps. Likely a challenge in the night for racing but who knows if I will be in the right position to take pictures anyway. It's so difficult to know what the seat will enable.

Has anyone used the Sony Hx-99. It might come in handy for kayaking and observing grizzlies from way far away with optical zoom, in the day time.

Good idea to walk into the pit for the race though. Maybe....

The smaller sensor at night doesn't sound super appealing. I like m4/3, not sure if I'd go smaller. 1/2.3" pretty small, idk.

I bought the Sony hx-99.

I don't want to be turned away at the entrance and this is a 'date with the wife' - I want to keep this casual.
And I am hopeful that when I go kayaking mid day, it will pick off the whales in the mist.
And if it just sucks, I will sell it or give it to one of my kids in a week. Its okay at mid day, not overly zoomed.

So far I would say:
- still image stabilization is weak
- 4k video stabilization is good
- low light performance is okay at higher iso's - accepting that this is about action and noise grain is okay - but the high fstops of the lens is causing 1/25s which is pretty low and without strong still stabilization - I am worried
- whether it works or not will depend on my steady (or not) hands and panning (or not) skills
[but I have not used or read the manual extensively yet]

I will let you know with pictures how it goes next week.

Thanks all for your contributions.

Scott
