That global shutter is pretty impressive tech.

Nikon relies on Sony‘s sensors. Sony will always use new sensor tech before any other brand. Dumb thread.

It does seem fairly expensive (compared to the previous model) and while global shutter is undoubtedly useful for some applications (fast action outside of situations requiring high resolution, photography in the presence of difficult flickering lights, and such) but let's see how the dynamic range is before getting too excited about it.

I don't necessarily think Nikon has to respond to this; it is quite niche.

24mpix niche camera for sport photographers that costs almost as much as A1. Impressive - sure, useful for most photographers - not really.

It will get more interesting once some of that tech trickles to A1II, but you'll need to buy a new camera for that in a year or two (Sony won't give you any game changing features in a firmware upgrade).

Great. It is a non issue. Nikon does not produce sensors, no need to get upset. Really happy to see the tech keeps advancing, and Sony is pushing it. At some point, Nikon will use those technology. Nikon doesn’t need to be on top of everything all the time. No need for brand war on this regard either. Unless, Nikon start producing their own sensors, like Apple did with M chips., well, even then, brand war is getting really old.

Hmmm, anyone who shoots with flash or strobe this is significant and there are lots of people who do.

I think it is silly to look at Sony as "beating" or "upstaging" anyone other than maybe Canon, because those are really the only two companies producing sensors in house. Everyone else uses Sony sensors, and must fall behind.

Instead I choose to look at this as an amazing step forward for cameras in general and a sign of what may be to come from all brands in several more years.

Or it could simply die off like the A7s series, I doubt that but who knows?

In concept global shutter is great, but there are some serious questions about this camera that remain to be answered before we can judge just how great a model it will be.

For example, its base ISO is 250. Will that matter? Nobody knows. Will the dynamic range be noticeably worse than the average camera? We don't know. It's also only 24MP, which may prove to be a significant downside for the genres of photography which would benefit from a global shutter in the first place, so will photographers be willing to sacrifice the resolution in exchange for the global shutter? Will the sensor have an AA filter and possibly further compound the lower resolution?

The answers to most of these questions may be in the camera's favor, but the fact is that these are very important questions which could very easily have less than great answers and which could really take the wind out of the sails. We have to wait and see what performance is actually like.

This thread went exactly as expected when the trolling attempt didn't even make it past the thread title.
