Just like in the desert we get mirage effect when there's temperature inversion(i.e. colder air near the surface). It's referred to as "fata morgana". It is a misconception that atmospheric distortion only occurs when it's hot. Any time there is temperature differential it occurs.

Ft Richardson was my first duty station. It's comical irony that I never got out to see and explore the landscape, given that now one of my favorite landscapes are glacially carved cirque lakes. Of course I was a private living in the barracks with no car and not much intelligence at the time.
