p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Where's Cooper's ?

While wandering through the LA Arboretum I could hear the call of this juvenile Cooper's hawk so I'd set about to try and locate him. Sometimes I could hear him right above me but couldn't see him. Other times I'd find him but he'd be too high up in a tree. And a few times I managed to get a pretty decent look.

Hi Gary,

These are all good yet even the last which is the second best for me pails by how special the first is. That's a fantastic photo.

Number 2 and the last for me, with number 1 being a strong third. Personally, I'd like about 10percent equally off the top and bottom of number 1 and it would move up to first place for me, heh, but we are all a fickle bunch with different tastes so don't change a thing!

Nice work tracking him down Gary!

Thanks Morris. As it turns out the first is the aftermath of what I think may have been the "best one that got away". I walked into this area after shooting Kingfishers and sat down on a bench to take a break. As soon as I looked up, there he was perched beautifully on a lower hanging branch right in front of me. As I raised my camera he took off and landed over by the trees on the grass. I can't believe I missed him As many times as this has happened and as many times as I tell myself to constantly scan an area, it's amazing how often I'll miss an animal right in front of me.

Thanks Eric. I agree. I'd like a bit tighter crop but this is already a stretch and I didn't want to push any more.
Appreciate the input.

That's how they survive and/or hide to hunt. It's movement that gives them away.

#1 is really pretty natural framing though I think you could lighten the subject a bit more Gary. Such a wonderful looking hawk, I wonder what they will name it now, if you haven't heard about the silliness of name changing on so many birds as we know them?

Sweet IF work, really nice set

Really nice set Gary of a beautiful bird. I could show you my book of the ones that got away but it’s to heavy to lift. But then you nail that last flight shot sharp as a tack. I love the way the Cooper’s can thread their way through the trees.

I tool like the last pic and the one before that, but all are nice. The first four pics are not of a Cooper's though, maybe a red-shouldered hawk?

I haven't heard that Karl. That does sound very silly to me. Appreciate the input.

I can't say for sure. My ID skills are very lacking, especially when it comes to juvenile hawks. I thought the tail was too broad for a Red-shouldered but I could easily be wrong.

I've had similar experiences with birdwatching where you're led on a wild chase by the calls. Sometimes you gotta play a waiting game, just find a good spot and let the bird come to you.
