Indeed, a newly released video on how the Z9 with FW 4.1 is perceived by Steve Perry in the field and how it does hold ground with the flagships from Sony Canon

Hope Steve hired home security. There will likely be protests by the Sony users.

I shoot Sony but never been a fanboy over any brand , interesting video for me as I've been thinking of switching back to Nikon purely for the 600mm PF . Even if the focus is similar regards performance between the two that would be good enough for me

Neat that Nikon shooters can enjoy what Sony shooters have been used to for two years.

Yes it is and hopefully one day Sony will be able to catch up with the lenses Nikon shooters have been using for a while now as well, but then we will have nothing to disagree about!

That was a little slow for a thread on the Nikon forum. Had to wait until the 5th post for a catty one from the Sony guy.

I have always found Sreve Perry to be reliable and unbiased. It looks to me that he did his usual good job on this review. Nikon has stepped up with this firmware update. I know all my Nikon Z9 shooting friends will benefit greatly from it.

Enjoy all!

I had a A7RV for a while with a 200-600 lens. They did a fine job tracking flying birds. I felt since the ver. 4.0 my Z9 was right there. Now more then ever I've also noted the Z9's immediate lock on a birds eye with great reliability. Now I certainly feel the Sony had nothing on what I"m experiencing now. If anything the Z9's doing a more immediate lock then the Sony did and more reliably.

Love Steve's videos. I remember ages ago, when he released a video on BBAF. That's when I learnt to properly use the AF-ON button on my then D700.

What we just had confirmed, is that there's no point in choosing/switching brands due to AF differences (assuming Canon is right there, which by all accounts it is). Hopefully this will end the AF wars (for now).

End the AF wars , you sir have forgotten this is the Internet ! Sparta would have sounded better , but oh well.

I always thought the systems were closer than most wanted to admit. Hats of to Nikon for the firmware updates, and not forcing users to upgrade the camera to get it.

Sony shooter (former Nikon shooter) here and I am glad to see that Nikon has caught up. Most of my closest photography friends shoot Nikon. However to me this video proves nothing. I am sure I this will not be a popular opinion but I am frankly sick of seeing videos making grand statements based off of a few examples of impossibly easy birds to focus on. Show me the difference on super fast and tiny shorebirds or swallows in flight. Show me the difference on warblers in dense foliage. Not a heron or crane standing. Not a cardinal in some ugly bush. And for sure not a gull in the water that is a mile away. Sony is smart. it didn't want to focus on the gull because it was pissed off that he was using an A1 to take that crappy photo Now that is not to say that the A1 is in any way better or the Z9. I have not tried the new firmware on Z9 to make that call. But it would not be surprising that all of these years later that Nikon was able to catch up or even surpass Sony. Point is that video tells me zero about the kind of shooting I do. I also don't think my A1 would have any problem at all focusing on that gull.

Steve Perry spends about 10 minutes explaining why you should use bird mode for birds, not for non-birds.

Z9 AF has always been good enough for my use for years. 400/2.8S TC for the last 18 months has been incredible. Throw in 800PF, 600PF to the mix and fw 4.1, I don't think I need to look at competitors anytime soon. In the end, camera company leapfrog one another in cycles, at any given time, one always enjoy some benefits over another here and there. My concern is not what is the best but whether what I have is good enough and gets its job done? If it can't do what I need, it may be time to move on, simple as that. At one stage, I invested in 4 different camera systems at the same time and never optimized for one and get confused when I switch systems. I finally have it narrowed down to what suit me best and
I am still shooting with 2 systems but still have lots of lenses from various brands. Now life is much easier.

Wow, they must have kept the good one for you and gave Steve the dud.
The other use cases you question were well covered on the Nikon board on the release of 4.10. It's all fabulous.
I very much doubt that Steve Perry would declare findings based on less than rigorous testing. Especially given the existential angst he knows it causes in some.

Fair and balanced statement. What I found with 4.1 specifically was reliable, repeatable sticky focus on birds amongst branches/obstructions. Photos like the two here would’ve required manual assistance previously and with any of the other systems I used in the last few years. My A1 would hop back and forth, OM-1 would ID the eye but often wouldn’t focus, also requiring manual assistance.

Cheers,

George

You are right. And this should encourage more adult behavior on the internet.
I have no doubt that Sony will knock it out of the park with their next release and Nikon will spend another 2 years catching up. But actually , I'm good with that.
