I am wondering how many people are choosing to save money by buying used "G" lenses + FTZ as opposed to buying the more expensive Z mount glass? For example I can buy a used 105mm f/2.8 G lens for around $450 compared to a used Z mount for close to $800.00

Generally speaking, every Z lens is optically superior to any F lens of the same focal. There are some F mount standouts for the look they produce and/or that have no Z equivalent, and these are the only ones I personally bother with. Also, F mount equivalents on the FTZ tend to focus slower than Z equivalents.

That said, outstanding images can still be made with F lenses; most are very good to excellent optically, just not in the same ballpark as the Z options at the more open apertures. However when stopped down to say f5.6 or more, there isn’t much difference between the last gen or two of F options and current gen Z. Thus if budget is a constraint, recent F lenses remain a viable choice for building a kit.

Final comment on the specific lens you mentioned — the Z version 105 macro is unparalleled in performance to almost anything else and would hands down be my choice at the current cost delta. It will be worth every penny and hold its value for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for your excellent comments. The 105 macro is one that I am considering right now.

My advice is to get the Z version and not look back. You will be very happy with it, and it’s also a far better general purpose 105 than any of the previous 105 macros.

I wouldn't invest in any of the obsolete F-mount lenses unless they were massively discounted or there was no good alternative in the Z system

Their MTF charts will give an objective comparison of the two .

the latest generation of Nikon F-mount AF "E" type (not to be confused with MF "Series E") primes are still worth getting and hold their own with high megapixel Z cameras. i have the 105/1.4 and the 28/1.4 and they're amazing.

as for the 105...the Z version is so much better. i would not waste money on F-mount version IMO.

Although I’m not in a hurry to swap my F mount lenses I’ve made a conscious decision not to invest in any “new to me” F mount lenses going forward.
Having said that, I still have and use my D5 but my key F mount lenses will still serve me well after it is gone. I’ll likely keep it though.

I bought the 105mm f/1.4 for F mount for use on my Z cameras. I bought it used from MPB for $1000, which I think is a great deal. For the 105 Macro, though, get the Z - it’s phenomenal.

I love the old F mount glass. More often than not I prefer it over the Z counterparts. I've owned and or shot with all the Z glass aside from the new Plena and ended up brooming everything but a select few. Side by side my photographic taste gravitates toward overall image rendering and not perfect corners and ultimate sharpness. I just can't fall in love with the clinical, stale perfection.

An interesting response which gives me food for thought. I already use a Nikon 70-300 AF-P on my Z6, and I love. It is very crisp and sharp.

I am!!.... F Mount lenses are the bargain of the century!! Quality construction from Japan!!! The .005% difference in IQ isn't worth spending the extra $$ on something filled with plastic.. I will take my metal constructed , carbon fiber lens hood glass all day long! (and YES I know most Z cameras are not made in Japan)

I would buy a G lens only to gain access to extremely unique renderings like that given by the 58 1.4 but not to save money. Otherwise those gold-embossed lenses + FTZ look odd to me. Actually FTZ + anythings looks odd

The FTZII has been attached to my Z8 since the day both arrived here (May 23). I love the Z8 and FTZII. Build Quality: It is as if the FTZII and Z8 were built as an integral unit at the factory. There is not an iota of flexibility in the coupling ... zero ! In fact, the combination is classy.

We should be grateful to Nikon for developing such a high-quality adaptor that allows us to use fast F glass for as far into the future as we decide, or as long as we can maintain an f mount lens.

I own F-mount glass (AFS) and do not yet have a need for a Z lens.. So for the foreseeable future, this FTZII will remain attached to the front of my Z8. That *may* change when I buy my first Z lens (the 180-600). As it is now, I record great loon and butterfly videos with my tripod-mounted 200-500 (and DaVinci ). But I'm sure I'll give into the internal zoom and short-light throw. of the 180-600

And my 500PF/TC14II renders images that are as sharp as those from my 500PF alone. The difference is indiscernible.

I have been buying some F mount Zeiss lenses when I've already owned a Z7.

If it's a zoom, I only buy Z-mount. I now have the primes that I wanted. I just bought a 400mm f2.8 FL which I'm ecstatic about ($6000 Cdn). These types of deals give me a chance to enjoy them. I'm not spending $15,000-$20,000 on a lens at this point in my life.

If I didn't own the Nikon 105mm or the 28mm f1.4E, I'd probably be buying them. I'd prefer the 85mm f1.2S and 135mm f1.8S, but the 105mm f1.4E is a much better price point for a similar image.

With this said, I fully understand that these lenses are not good financial investments unless they're priced at a low enough point already

The only F mount lens I bought since Z system came out was 58/1.4G.
I had it in the past and sold it then kind of miss it
F glass is still good today as it was in the past but Z glass is generally better optically.
If budget is an issue, certain F glass is a good option. Personally I am more likely to
get Z glass option rather than F mount but there are still some F mount lens
that has no equivalent Z glass so if I need them, I would not hesitate to buy F mount lens
(hopefully at a bargain).

I thought pretty highly of the f/1.8G primes relative to their price and weight, so maybe those. The 1.4G primes and 2.8G zooms, meh, if you're spending that much save up a little more because the S (or even E) lenses are much better.

New superteles are crazy expensive though, so that might be an exception. I bought a 500/4G because there's absolutely no chance I could ever afford a 600S (or even 500E). Though even then, I think some people would tell you the 500/5.6E is good enough (and enough lighter) that it might be the smarter buy even with the slower aperture.

Nikon 35 1.4, 58mm 1.4 and 105mm 1.4.
None of the 1.8s lenses do have comparable rendering for portraits to these and while I love the look of the 85mm 1.2S, for that price I've been able to get mentioned lenses( on the used market) plus a short vacation.

Like some others, I find the F mount exotic super teles to be very interesting at the prices they are dropping to, especially the E FL lenses.
