This makes the third time I've done the one day 15 mile loop hike for this canyon. Each time I've gone counterclockwise. However, after getting heat cramps in my legs in the last couple miles in this instance, I'm kind of wondering about doing it clockwise next time. Yes, it would mean the up and over portion of the reef would be last, but it would also mean not having five miles in the afternoon sun. Anyways, here's my favorite shots from it.
Sunrise while going up and over the reef.
While walking towards it, this rock looked like a nondescript round rock. Looking at it after passing was much more interesting, it looked like a mammoth's skull.
HDR composite of a very large alcove created by the water undercutting the rock. I tried to process this one so that it resembled what you'd see with your eyes, rather than the too-bright HDR defaults.
A tiny rock cave.
Fall colors on display.
This formation is near the southern end of the canyon, and the reason I keep coming back to this trail. I call it the flame wall.
C&C welcome!
