This will pair beautifully with the 100-300 2.8. A range of 24-300 at 2.8 with only two bodies. Can't wait.

My Adorama pre-order just changed status to preparing for shipment. That means my pre-order will be filled in this first batch. Unfortunately, I am guessing they will hold it to ship until the 13th or 14th. Would be nice to get it sooner since it's in.

$3000 US? for a 24-105 zoom lens

It's evidently NOT for me.

My local dealer caught me off guard and called saying they had one for me. Didn’t expect it till the 14th.

Any initial feedback? I cancelled my order since I don't need it for a while and want to see reviews first. Also want to see how it compares to the 28-70 f2 which I own.

Similar situation here. I still have it preordered. Every early preview say it’s a banger of a lens. I am waiting to see how it compares to my 28-70 f2.

How do you find the autofocus on the 28-70? That's my biggest gripe with it. I feel like it doesn't perform great for fast subjects and I get some misses when using small single point (back typically)

28-70 AF isn't perfect but I think it's more due to general mirrorless AF weaknesses. For example, focus is less consistent in low light, low contrast and/or strongly backlit situations. Backlit is where I feel mirrorless has weaknesses and will often focus on the edge of an object, like the side of someone's head, rather than their eyes because the contrast around the edges is better. Otherwise, when my 28-70 misses, it's often due to the camera's face/eye detection/tracking not recognizing or sticking with the intended subject when there are other, clearer, people in the scene. In any case, I'm getting more consistent results with the 28-70 than I ever did with the 24-70/2.8 II on DSLRs and like its rendering/character a whole lot more. In this respect I'm very curious about the 24-105's 'look' compared to the 28-70.

I do slow moving portraits so the lens doesn’t really have to flex much, no problems here.

Yes I've found that it works great for slow portraits but fails at tracking subjects (action, pets, fast kids) and also for video the 28-70 AF is terrible at tracking moving people on my R5. If the 24-105 f2.8 is substantially better in this regard with decent rendering, and if I decide to stick with Canon RF long term (R5II) I may swap my 28-70 for the 24-105 f2.8. Excited to see some reviews on this lens in the next couple weeks.

Would be an interesting option to use the built-in AF assist light, but I guess you cannot force it if camera decides it doesn't need it.

Maybe someday I'll try it, but that feature is intentionally disabled on my cameras. Most of the people photography I do is events where I'm trying to blend in as much as is possible with the massive 28-70, so don't need an annoying AF assist light shining in people's faces to really draw their attention towards me. I'll gladly accept slightly missed focus instead.

This is surprising I film quite a lot with the R5 and 28-70, mostly at F2 and face AF and never noticed any issue with it. I do film a lot of winning ceremonies and winning rounds of athletes on horses galloping and it does not have issue tracking them. I did film also at night and in the rain in NYC and also did not have issues other than user error. Also, a couple of parties but they were all not super low light. I do also film on gimbal walking, running or skating with a lot of back lighting and also did not notice any particular issue, for sure is better than my previous DSLR setup 1Dx III and 24-70 II

What settings are you using? I like to have my R5 to the fastest AF speed as I rarely do rack focusing and once the person come into the frame, I want to have it react quickly.

My lens was just delivered from Adorama. I have only had ~15 minutes out with it but I took some test shots to see if there are any fatal flaws. For me, the short answer is no, but this lens follows what we have seen with the 14-35 and 10-20 where there are digital corrections being used on top of what is a very sharp optic prior to correction. Contrast is also very high, so even where it isn't as sharp it still looks punchy. It isn't fully optically corrected and you can decide if that works for you. Here are a few quick observations and samples. All samples were processed in ACR which does have a lens profile for this model:

Size and Handling
-It is like a DSLR 70-200 f/2.8 as others have pointed out. The dimensions aside from weight are actually a bit smaller than one of those, so it will fit into a bag just fine. It's denser than I expected and so it is quite hefty. For me this is OK as it could be a one-lens solution instead of two, etc.

24mm Results
-Surprisingly sharp prior to distortion correction across the frame at f/2.8. Gets really good at f/4 and fully sharp in the f/5.6-8 range. I didn't see a worthwhile benefit to stopping down further than f/8.
-Sunstar looks decent, but there is a good bit of flare shooting into the sun (see below):

-As I mentioned, it doesn't cover the full image circle at 24mm. I'm not yet sure where it does. The image below was shot at f/8:

You can see a full-resolution version on the R5 by clicking here.

50mm Results
-Pretty sharp from f/2.8. There is a boost at f/4 especially at the very edges where I would say it is as sharp as I need. f/5.6 looks great.

70mm Results
-Here I see a dip at the outer 10-15% of the image. Everything else is extremely sharp right from 2.8. At the edges contrast is very high, but there is a bit of a nervous look to the sharpness. Stopping down doesn't really change anything, it's about the same all the way from max aperture.
-Perhaps related to this, perhaps not, distortion correction is problematic on the current profile in ACR. If you turn off distortion correction you see a complete image with some pincushion-ing:

-If you start using distortion correction it reduces the pincushion effect, but the edges show a strange effect like there is no data but it's not cropping it out:

105mm Results
-Again, most of the frame is very sharp and contrasty from f/2.8. I see a recovery here at the edges compared to 70mm, they get sharper.

There is lots more to test like bokeh and intermediate focal lengths, but overall this is quite sharp and my copy seems really well centered, especially for this kind of zoom range. I'm used to going through bad copies of RF zooms but I think they did a great job here with QC.

Thanks for the update. How does it compare to the 24-70RF?

The dark corners at 24mm for a $3000 lens is interesting. But if the image quality is good then I don't care.

Looks to be generally a very nice lens....curious how much the distortion correction affects final image quality in the corners...since this is such an expensive lens.

One thing, though: Why can't Canon figure out their coatings? Honestly, one of the biggest draws that had me switch to Nikon this past summer is the large amount of flare in the optics I use for landscape...the 24-105/4L is horrid with regards to flare, and the 14-35/4L is good but not great....this seems to be somewhere in-between. (My Nikon zooms in this range have almost zero flare and ghosting).

It's an odd thing, as some RF lenses seem to be very well corrected and others are truly terrible in this regard, and it doesn't seem to matter much whether it's an expensive lens or not. May not matter for a lot of shooting, but it is odd.

Thx for the quick review. I've noticed the same regarding artifact around the edges when processed in LR. When I uncheck lens profile it disappears, and I don't see it in in-camera preview. I presume it's a bug on Adobe end.

I agree about the contrast - even from the limited amount of photos I took, the punchiness was noticeable.
Bokeh is beautiful.

Zoom ring rotates little over 90 degrees from 24mm to 105mm and it is easy to turn due to internal zooming and consideration given to use with power zoom unit.
I'd have preferred the lens collar to come off - the exposed face of the collar after taking of the foot requires care as one unfortunate ding would compromise the integrity and stability when the foot needs to be reattached. Canon should have supplied a cap to protect the coupling area.

Regarding where this lens fits with existing lenses in users' lens lineup is an important factor to be considered carefully. As for my purposes, it's a one-lens solution to majority of the events I shoot, previously done with 24-70 but always wanted a little more reach. Fully loaded with battery grip and flash attached, the gear weighs over 7lbs or 3.25kg but still lighter than hauling two cameras.

Quick samples

One way to interpret the results is to ask how this lens compares to other 24-105s. Since this is about twice as large and 2.5x the cost, it should be significantly better while still being realistic about the focal range, ie it probably can’t be prime-like. I’ve shot both v1 and v2 of the EF 24-105, the Sigma 24-105 Art, the Sony 24-105, and briefly the RF f/4. The best of those was the Sony and I had to accept never-perfect corners at 24mm in order to get something that performed well stopped down at 105mm. This lens is definitely sharper and gives me f/2.8. The EF lenses all had pretty significant weaknesses.

Another observation: the finish on this lens feels different from previous RF zooms. It’s smoother but very dense feeling. I really prefer this as I have found that the regular finishes scratches easily. Perhaps others can verify if it seems the same to them.
