IMO the 24-105/2.8 is not aimed at casual photographers. It's a tool aimed at working photographers who are increasingly required by their clients to do hybrid stills/video work. Canon already has smaller, lighter, less expensive 24-105 options available to suit other applications. The 24-105/2.8 is more of a niche product in this focal length range, like the 28-70/2, that will appeal to a relatively small number. If you consider the design that was put into this lens and its likely target market, the price point is in the ballpark. Certainly Canon is optimistic about its pricing and typically shoots to the high side with room for downward adjustment, if needed over time. But it's possible that like the 28-70/2, this lens might not see the periodic discounts given to more popular high-priced models.

I'm surprised no video folks have mentioned the new Canon PZ-E2 Power Zoom Adapter designed for this incredible len. I've never seen such a device.

I predicted it!
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1830711/1

I'm curious if it can be outfitted with an ENG grip with zoom rocker or external zoom demand like the 18-80mm or 17-120mm.

There was a PZ-E1 for the latest revision of the EF18-135mm--I think it was to capitalize on the DSLR video market. Like this one, it attached to the lens as an option, and it has a motor to rotate the zoom elements through gearing, but it screwed to the bottom of the lens versus the side. The PZ-E2 seems to be very similar, in that it's oriented to somebody holding the camera with both hands out from them, using the rear LCD. The difference seems to be that the zoom buttons are on the right side versus the a slider toggle on the left.

The CN 18-80mm zoom lens is also similar, but more beefy. It has a rosette for a grip with a rocker...which would be nice for those who shoot ENG style, with the camera over the shoulder. A lot of over the shoulder rail/pad kits exist for the C100/200/300 etc which would make a handgrip with zoom rocker great for this lens.

But I guess they figure it'll be people with R5/R6's and C70s who run and gun holding it at chest level versus eye level.

Not sure if you noticed that the more expensive version of the zoom grip's "20-pin interface (PZ-E2B only) offers additional support for Canon's Zoom / Focus demands and Zoom Servo Grip."

BTW, the Canon Europe 24-105/2.8 page has downloadable sample images in the gallery, but they all appear to have been 'graded' with fake grain in post that obliterates any pixel peeping ability.

I'm sure if another company were able to design and manufacture a similar spec lens to the RF 24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, and sell at a lower price and still make a profit, they would do it. And people would buy it. But such is a tall order and unlikely to happen with a niche lens. I recall Tamron once marketed a 35-105 2.8 and it was very pricey for its day and huge and heavy. Didn't sell well and I never saw one in the wild albeit I saw one for sale at B&H.

If you compare this lens to the Tamron FE 35-150mm that 24-34mm is an extremely expensive piece of focal range. This RF lens is twice the price of that Tamron, and it's also heavier. Beside loosing that extra 1800 euro you will also loose light and shallow DOF between 35-79mm and the 106-150mm part of the focal range as well.

The RF has ILIS. Most event shooting is action, and true video stabilization is on a gimbal, but nonetheless, that's an advantage of course.

I agree with that

But we both know amateurs will “need” this lens too to take the seemingly obligatory pet shot or child’s party shots !!!

Personally I ask myself who am I kidding? I look at the work produced by the likes of Vivian Maier and what kit she used to get them and I’m so humbled. All the kit in the world is not gonna save you if you don’t have the eye, regardless what the manufacturer spiel tells you.

All this has done has made me dig my heels in further and vow to improve my shots just to prove a point to myself - whilst chuckling at the lemmings waddling to the cliff edge in hope that this new piece of kit will help them fly !!

It is funny and also tragic that the relentless power of consumerism has yet again…gotcha!!
…reminds me that like shiny fishing tackle, it’s to hook the fisherman not the fish

It's a tool, are you going to judge people who use it? How about people that buy 'pro' power tools, or drive trucks in suburbs?

You can have a stabilized 24/2.8 and 105/2.8 - in the same lens. That is a MASSIVE amount of flexibility, and if you asked any pro from times passed, would they rather have a lens like this?

They definitely would if it fit the shoot.

I think you're too absorbed in your forum trolling to see the forest through the trees.

Actually I missed that. That completes the picture for me. If you buy this lens, and want an ENG style cinema setup, you buy the PZ-E2B version and add the ZSG-C10 grip and plug its connector into the power zoom motor piece.

It also lets the lens to be used in a tripod/studio setup with a zoom demand on the tripod handle.

The only difference is there isn't a mounting point for the grip on the new lens or the zoom motor piece, but Canon probably figured most people would just mount it to a rail with an Arri rosette bracket.

So it's $3000 for the lens, $1300 for the zoom motor piece and $475 for the grip. Roughly the same as the CN 18-80mm T4.4, so that's an improvement (:

The price is in line with wat I was expecting for something like this. 24-105 is a very useful range and at 2.8 it is a dream.

For video is even more powerful thanks to the power zoom, almost par-focal and very limited focus breathing.
Imo the power zoom thing is way too expensive for what it is... I have a feeling that Canon wants to recover some R/D for optimizing this lens for video by charging video customers.

To put in prospective, not really apple to apple but the closes FF power zoom cine lens in term of range, sensor coverage and fstop is this one: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1729470-REG/fujinon_600022978_premista_28_100mm_t2_9_pl.html
Suddenly Canon offer is super cheap :-) again not really apple to apple but this is what is on the market today for FF coverage.

I'm sure Canon will sell many of these 24-105 2.8....

That's how I took it, but would love an explanation from @Pixelpuffin, who wrote it. So sick of people on the internet idly taking shots at groups to which they (assumedly?) do not belong. I can open the Reddit tab for that (I actually love Reddit, simply because it's the only place you can both upvote and downvote things).

Consider the 'boomer' comment downvoted.

Totally different class of lens but Canon released a Nano USM zoom, the EF-s 18-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM, with Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1 as an accessory in 2016. I actually owned it and shot dozens of music videos with it. Wish I could afford the "update." I think I paid $300 for the PZ-E1.

Under 3lbs and $3k seems pretty reasonable. Yes fast glass gets heavy and expensive, it's in line with 70-200/2.8's though. Not much more than Rf similar size to IS II.

Of course there's f/4 on both the 70-200 & 24-105 if you'd like lighter

I don't think I expected to ever see a 2.8 24-105. Pretty amazing

I ordered the lens myself. I think it will pair nicely with the RF 100-300mm. Traveling with only 2 lenses and getting 24mm to 600mm is very appealing. Add the RF 15-35mm f2.8 to the travel kit and my needs / wants are covered very well. My RF 70-200mm has a lot of overlap with the 100-300mm and I prefer internal zoom vs external. Maybe another Kenzie lens

Most likely will sell the RF 70-200mm and the 100mm macro for this one.

It won't be lightweight, but it is an amazing aperture/range!

If the 28-70 would not have existed I would probably have ordered the 24-105 2.8 but I just like the 28-70 too much.
I wish the 100-300 and 100-500 would have the power zoom connector as it is a more useful range for power zoom for my work.

My "normal" kit
R5c, RF 16 2.8, RF 28-70 2.0, RF 100-300 2.8 + TCs

My "light weight" kit for skiing and mtb
R5, RF 16 2.8, RF 28 2.8, RF 100-500

I still have the RF 70-200 2.8 but is now basically relegated as gimbal lens.... I should once check the range that I use the most on gimbal as the 24-105 2.8 could replace the 70-200. I hope one day you will be able to control the powerzoom from a RS3 pro.... right now I use the DJI focus motor to "power zoom" but is a pita to setup....

Any updates on this?

B&H says that it will ship on 14Dec23.
But I saw some people on instagram playing with it.

I am looking forward to the reviews. If is is as good as 24-70 rf I would be quite happy.

I decided to pre-order it. The lens has some features that I determined made it worth the purchase. The F/2.8 will allow me to shoot in the gyms I spend the most time in for volleyball, basketball, and wrestling. I have the f/4 version already and love the focal length, but I don't get enough use out of it because it isn't fast enough, so I use my 70-700 f/2.8 most of the time. My only other fast choice is my RF 15-35 f/2.8. It is excellent when I am under the basket, but not much else with basketball. The RF 24-105 f/2.8 will work nicely with my 70-200 f/2.8 on a second body. It will also work well with my 100-400 on a second body when doing fastpitch. The electronic par focal will also expand my video use for me as well. I should get more use out of it than my current f/4 version. Overall, the new f/2.8 seems to be a much more useful lens, given the f/2.8 and electronic parfocal ability. I would expect it to have a negative impact on the RF 24-70 f/2.8 sales in the months ahead.
