Just when I thought a lens couldn't be slower in terms of aperture, this comes out. At first, my thoughts are/were "no way".
BUT, but it's also very intriguing. The range alone is very useful for birding and wildlife. It's so hard to get close enough to the subject at times - critters and fowl don't necessarily want to be close to their human counterparts (and I don't always either).
I think it deserves some careful consideration. You can get a faster 800 mm lens, but it's also, by necessity, going to be a larger, heavier lens. No magic there. I suppose you could grab that old Sigma Contemporary with adapter, and slap a 1.4X on it and get a similar focal length and aperture range. Complete with less reliable focus.
I'm going to really look close at this one. I have the 100-500 and it is nice. The plus of the 200-800 is, of course, 800. The downside is f/9 at the long end. In bright conditions, not a problem. In darker forests, and especially with a crop camera, potentially an issue. You'll be pushing the ISO to get an acceptable shutter speed in some situations.
Decisions, decisions...
